I love lightning storms, though I've had a couple of close calls; one of my dream destinations would be Lake Maracaibo and its Catatumbo lightning. Though sadly with all the civil unrest in Venezuela, it's unlikely I'll get to see it in the near future. The distant flashes behind you were a great moody effect. I'm sorry for your family's medieval hardships but clearly they made for strong generations of intrepid adventurers and storied heirlooms!

Singlehanding is a little risky, but there steps you can take such as sleeping during the day, using an AIS and a radar detector onboard and a radar alarm set for intermittent scanning if in a high traffic area to minimize chances of a collision. This approach served me well during 7 years of singlehanding in a Cape Dory 28 and later in a steel Chatham 33 including 3 year circumnavigation in the high latitudes. Fair winds and far places to you. "Some nights I just dream of the ocean, god I wish I were sailing again" - Jimmy Buffett

nice work on using a preventer on the boom when down wind. Another thing I used well as a single hander is Heaving to. ie backing the headsail and lashing the helm(clove hitch) with the main still driving on a reach. You go on a reach for a bit to rest make food w/e. then sheet in the jib and take off on course again. I once had to douse sails after crossing the georgia straight in a blustery 35knots so I heave to, moved forward and just hauled the jib right onto the deck. The main dble reefed was way easy to handle after that which was good as a crowed had gathered at the marina to see if I would land on the rocks like so many others. lol
@themakerspath5 жыл бұрын
for example from close hauled you harden the windward jib sheet which backs the sail. You fall off a bit and find the sweet spot with tiller position and main set for a close or beam reach. clove hitching the tiller should keep her on a reach for quite a while if the wind doesn't change. ;-)
