Sorry in advance for the wall of text. Bear with me. I used MS Works in windows 98. It had plenty of features. Spell check, full font manipulation, color, size, font, margins, page layout, whatever. Matter of fact, I don’t recall it being very different then word processors now. I don't recall it taking more than 10 seconds to load. Wrote long homework essays. No issues. Well I was using it on a computer with a 133 megahertz pentium. And 16 megabytes of ram. I don't get how _MS Word_ can possibly _not_ open _instantaneously_ now. Matter of fact, I don't get how MS Word could possibly not be instantaneous 20 years ago. By then, processors had reached over 2 gigahertz in (2000+ mhz), and gigabytes of ram (1000s of megabytes). Hell, it should go back in time and launch itself 5 seconds before you go to open it. Kidding aside - computers are in a whole different dimension at this point. So I don't care how now / feature packed. MS Word is… It’s a word processor. Not a video game. Not Doom Eternal. Not Doom from 1993. It's baffling. Throw an -entirely valid - reason it it requires more processing power out there. Hell, tell me it needs hundreds of times more computing power than what I was running on windows 98. (I can pull out a computer from the 90s and use side-by-side, right now, today). Sure... Ok. Hundreds of times more power for 'x' reasons. Seems crazy, but whatever, ok. Well I say... so what? Hardware today is literally _tens of thousands of times_ further along spec-wise than it was then. What is going on? Seriously?? I swear that they are currently programming things with languages designed by shamans to help potatoes grow, faxing them to Tasmania, and asking AI to translate them in real time every time the program opens.

Today, the apps and the OS are fully integrated. That was not the case with Win 98, which ran "on top" of DOS and was nothing more than UI. The apps were, basically, DOS apps and ran in the same manner, using their own UI. It is the heavy integration which causes the much slower operation. At that time the CPUs were already 64 bit but the software never made use of it, because the other hardware could not yet handle it. 😁✌🖖

Mso then and now are very different in capability. That you do not use it does not mean others don't and it has its toll on app size and performance.

Question is, if you did these tests 10-20 times, how much of a variation would it be between each run? It feels very random whether one loads something faster than the other, and it could just come down to happenstance of some scheduled task or something. Bottom line is probably that Windows in general ain't that speedy 😅
@EverythingeeB2 ай бұрын
Good point. I was considering doing a dry run before tests to see if that would help with opening speed and consistency with results. Should I implement that in future tests?

@@EverythingeeB you should at least repeat the tests like the one when you had the ltsc here go into update instead of shut down. It's very unprofessional and lazy. Don't worry, I am not subscribed and didn't like the video, all is well.

I code for a living, i dont want all the shite and bloat they stick in, i just want clean and efficient...
