@@leepspvideo If you don't have a computing device to run Windows then it's cheaper and more efficient to buy a used PC on an auction site to run Windows 10 on because you can pick up a 3rd or 4th generation Core i5 or i7 SFF PC for less money than a Pi. I think it's an extremely silly decision to make to start with nothing but then buy a Pi to run Windows - completely pointless. Plus that's the time to start learning Linux because when support for Windows 10 ends and that PC can't run Windows 11, then that's the time to stick Linux on it - which will run fine on it for years to come.

@@terrydaktyllus1320 I have never recommended buying a Pi to use Windows. If you already have a Pi and are using it, but then you need Windows for a particular task that isn’t available on any other system. You can install windows on an sd card or usb stick. It’s just another option.
@terrydaktyllus13206 ай бұрын
@@leepspvideo My interpretation of your words is if you have nothing but suddenly decide that you need a Windows instance, then a Pi is a viable platform on which to do that - which is the bit I take issue with. Simply being able to "run" Windows (or any OS) on a platform isn't the same as replacing a full desktop machine with it because, in my opinion, when people say "desktop" then they means "a computer that runs hi-def video on KZbin, plays a few modern games and allows them to do video editing" - and a Pi will, of course, struggle with that, even on Linux.

It's cool to see Windows on Pi and great fun to tinker with. But it's not useable desktop replacement while the KZbin video performance is like a 15 year old pc.
@terrydaktyllus13206 ай бұрын
Whoever said that a Raspberry Pi has to be a "desktop replacement"? SBCs were originally designed as cheap educational coding devices for schoolkids and students, as cheaper industrial boards that can run variations of Linux, and for the hobbyist community to dabble with electronics, I/O and IoT. Then a lot of people realised that they are good for retro-gaming, especially because the size of an SBC means it can go inside other boxes or in handhelds. But then SBC makers suddenly started churning out more powerful devices but couldn't keep to the original $35 price bracket - so now you end up paying $80+ for an SBC for which you still need to buy cooling, a PSU and a case before you even get started. Yet you can pick up a more powerful 3rd or 4th generation Core i5 or i7 SFF PC used on auction sites for about $50 that will be cased, cooled and have a PSU. So how does the economics of the $80 SBC work any more?
@terrydaktyllus13206 ай бұрын
PS. I am able to watch KZbin perfectly fine on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61 from 2007 (= 17 year old PC) perfectly happily - not everything has to be in 1080p or 4K video to be perfectly watchable, as long as you have a normal attention span.
@tafkawac6 ай бұрын
@@terrydaktyllus1320 "Whoever said that a Raspberry Pi has to be a "desktop replacement"? " - I didn't say it has to be. I said it's not. As I mentioned, it's a tinkerer's project. The problem is that these videos sell it like it is has desktop performance. "how does the economics of the $80 SBC work any more?" - it doesn't, hence why RPi are cashing out and focusing on the industrial sector.
@terrydaktyllus13206 ай бұрын
@@tafkawac I never said that you did say it has to be, please stop putting words into my mouth and then arguing against them. You mentioning the fact that "Pi as a desktop replacement" exists in the minds of some people (which I also know to be true having seen many previous comments in channels about it) makes it a discussion topic that you raised that I that I then responded to - so stop being so defensive also. I think we're in agreement here. As far as I am concerned, a $35 Pi made it a good device to mess around with on an electronics workbench or for a schoolkid to learn programming on - in either case, if the Pi got broken, it wouldn't be a big issue. $80+ for an SBC doesn't scale or make any economic sense. But since the Pi 4, the Pi Foundation has lost direction and they're really not behaving like a non-profit organisation should be, in my view. They are pandering to the "silly" demands of computer newbies who don't understand how you "engineer" a computing solution properly but just know how to build one single device that they believe should do everything and for that "everything", there should be a step-by-step video on how to do it because they lack the attention spans to read books or just try things out for themselves to learn. It's their loss and our gain because that's why I can go to an auction site now and pick up a more powerful (than a Pi 5) used SFF PC for less money when I build my computing solutions - they're cheap because few people know how to make use of them properly.

Or forget the N100 PC and Windows completely and pick up a used SFF PC on "your favourite auction site" for about $50 and that will have a 3rd or 4th generation Core i5 or i7 CPU in it, 4 or 8GB RAM (that is cheaply expandable) and just run Linux perfectly fine on that.
