On Windows Vista, the startup screen should show "Starting Windows", and in underside of it is the progress bar inherited from Windows XP (change color: XP: blue, Vista: green).

Windows didn't become very popular until version 3.1. Windows 95, 98, 2000 & ME would version 4. XP is version 5. Vista is version 6 and obviouly Windows 7 is version 7
