Today we're checking out another one of these "Windows simulators" for the Nintendo DS. It's a homebrew project from 2011 called DS Vista. It's not as complete as WintenDos XP and it's full of bugs, but you know that won't stop me from covering it.

This might actually be possible, since samsung's smart fridges use Android (i think) so if someone makes a x86 emulator on Android that can run vista, then its pretty easy from there.

Oh yeah, I remember those poorly made DS homebrews, coded hastily by teenagers with flash carts. What a time it was! We watched p0rn in DS Browser and had IRC conversations in DS Organize.

2.147 million is the 32 bit integer limit, so I presume the division counts the amount of times it subtracts the lower number from the upper number, and halts when it hits zero. and there is a failsafe that stops if it hits the 32 bit limit.

lol. the psp had these things called "portals" i think where you would paste a bunch of files onto your system and play a "windows simulator" through the psp web browser. the files would contain things like games and flash cartoons for you to open up and play on the browser too. this reminded me a lot of that

I have a soft spot for projects like this because when I was first learning web dev back in the late 90s/early 2000s my favorite website to study, Anime Theme, was styled (very effectively, might I add) as a functional Windows desktop. Recreating something like that using modern web technologies is a much simpler affair now, but back then it was mind-blowing to me as a 15-year-old just starting out and studying website source code.

@@Ricar2002YT Used XP in schools doesn't mean you're an XP era people, I've used 3.1 and 98 myself and my schools was using 95 and NT 4.0, I'm not either fond of or hate that era, the difference from 9x / Me to XP to Vista are really huge, from hardware requirements to user experience, XP is undoubtedly beautiful, stable and entertaining for me until Win 7, Vista is too early for XP users.

Sometimes I wonder if the people who develop software like this, would of have wished to have much greater functionality on the software they are developing, but instead eventually scrap it due to not being popular, or not gaining enough traction.

As someone who does weird software projects like this, normally its just pet projects that keep your tinker itch scratched and you move on. Not a lot of planning is involved, documentation is minimal, and followthrough is rare

Ah this brings me back to a time when I installed that windows vista and/or 7 "theme" in my psp, it was not a theme, actually it was more lile this but whatever and an android phone and the iphone one too, good times, they had many little apps and other things, not much but it was fun.

I have a soft spot for these. Couldn’t figure out how to mod my PSP as a teenager. and the only flashcart I had for DS was the really limited Action Replay one, so the only homebrew I “played” was PSPXP. It used HTML so it didn’t need CFW and I thought it was so cool when I was 14. I assume people are making Android apps in their bedrooms today, but it doesn’t have the same feel as these old random projects for modded systems.

Honestly, the performance and stability doesn't really stack up. To properly recreate the Vista experience it needs to have more bugs, run slower, and crash more. 😂

The homebrew of Windows XP on the DS and Windows 95 on the Sega Genesis are much better made and perfectly imitate the layout and features of their original OS. The Vista one is interesting, but it would be really cool to see one from Vista or 7 that actually tried to get closer to the real deal.

Interestingly about the calculator, it is using 32-bit numbers. I think it is trying to do infinite, where the largest signed 32-bit number is 2147483647. When you were trying to input the largest number, you had it begin with 9 so it was 900 something million (9 digits). I wonder if you try 2147483647 will it go to 10 digits as this is the largest signed 32-bit number? Also I wonder if division supports decimals using floating points or something. If you try 4/3 does it 1.3.. or does it just give you 1?

Burn the Installing iso to a CD 3. turn on the IBM AT 5170 running windows 3.1 with a cd drive #. put the cd into the drive 5. type “win” to start up windows 3.1 6. Go in DOS prompt and try to or even install Opera 7. let the installation go! 8. Open opera
