Cracked the activation? Like the actual activation code? Because crack existed even when the system was still alive, still supported. But if someone figured out the activation code and how it works, then yeah. I can finally install Windows XP in my virtual machine! :D

As someone in IT who has had to call microsoft support this year to activate an OEM windows XP key, im so glad this exists now. It took over 20 minutes because i could barely understand the guy and he needed to read out a 30 digit code in his thick indian accident. One of the most frustrating things ive done.

Windows XP/2003 source codes have already been leaked. We need Windows 8 source code at least, because it's almost nothing different from 10/11, it just can't run UWP apps in windows.

That's not how open source works. Open source means the code base is available to the public to view, edit, etc. This basically gives the key to use it, not the ingredients and the blue prints to build it or modify it.

An open source version would be in so much legal trouble that it couldn't fly in countries that respect US copyrights... Even if MS themselves would chose to ignore it, so many companies have had mutual NDAs with MS, so it's a legal minefield. Just like when a big chunk of Win2k source code leaked, nobody in the open source community dared to adopt the code... but of course, some developers may have learnt a trick or two by reading win2k sources.

People that question why people want to continue to install and use old OS's like XP forget that just like there is a large market for retro game consoles and games, there is a market for retro computers and PC games. Or that there are plenty of businesses that still use old computers and software because they still work perfectly for the use case and there is no need to spend thousands to hundreds of thousands updating to brand new systems when an old Compaq running Windows 95 or even DOS still works just as well for what they are doing as it did back in the 90's. Try installing Window's 11 on a laptop from the year 2001. The use old old operating systems will never fade as long as there are still old computers that runs best on them in active use on this planet. In which case, being able to bypass activation on operating systems where the Activation servers have been shut down is a necessity. Hell, The Michigan Lottery's Club Keno system is stull running XP.

Thing is though, you likely can't just steal closed-source code and re-upload it as open source. So unfortunately, I have little hope for an open-source version of XP, unless Microsoft were to have uploaded the code themselves (instead of it having been cracked by someone outside the company, or even an employee who did it without the company's permission). I think we _should_ be able to able to re-create programs and OS' which were clearly abandoned, but whether anyone actually _can_ I don't know.

The Tomahawk missile ran on Windows XP and probably other smart weapons as well. It was the U.S. government that kept the Windows XP program alive because of all the weapons that use it.

That's not how copyright low works. Cracking the activation does NOT make someone be able to make an open source version. An open source version can be made by creating brand new code that does basically the same thing as long as it doesn't use any existing patents, this is how GNU/Linux was made. Two groups cloned different parts of the Unix OS: Linus the kernal and the GNU team the rest of the system, put together it made a full OS that was a clone of Unix. This became known as just Linux even though technically Linux is just the kernal.

An open source version of Windows XP would be extremely useful as a long term legacy compatibility option for organisations still using old custom software which was designed for Windows XP and cannot be updated for a newer Windows version without a multi million dollar investment to have the software redeveloped from scratch or to replace still functional older equipment like MRI machines! :)

Garnering the key assignment algo and pattern is hardly tantamount to a major decompilation of XP. Those are two extremely different things, I would nearly say polars of each other. I agree it would be cool but I wouldn’t read into it as anything other than just simply understanding the key assignment algo. For a company that specialises in cyber security it’s pretty important that you guys know these things and that this is a learning experience if nothing else.
