There are ways to get extended service patches up to 2022 though, but it takes a bit of effort to do so. Antivirus + up to date browser + common sense is a valid substitute (for now). A recommendation I have is to turn off internet connection whenever you're not using it. When you're offline, malicious software can only be installed with flash drives, CDs or similar things, but being careful with those should be easy.
@adventuresinnostalgia7 ай бұрын
That's a great point about disconnecting from the internet for extra security. Disabling Autorun can also help prevent malware from automatically running from external drives. But wouldn't malware creators eventually find ways to exploit other vulnerabilities besides the internet connection? I would really love to keep using XP, but with 3rd party software makers no longer making their updated software compatible with XP, I am forced to upgrade. I went to Windows 7 after a new game could not run on XP. Firefox and Chrome stopped their updates, meaning that more recent web sites might have issues displaying properly. Many more software no longer run on XP, which limits the usefulness of the OS.

XP security is not particularly a problem for experienced users. The BIG problem (you didn't mention) is almost all new software now tests for operating system type and immediately comes up with "wrong windows version" if you try to install it on XP, even if the software will work fine. A system hack is required to change the XP to windows 7 in the test so software will install. This still can present problems with software that actually will fail under XP.
@adventuresinnostalgia2 жыл бұрын

Nice video! I wonder if disabling the internet access but retaining the LAN is a more secure way than worrying about AV & firewall robustness. I guess it all comes down to what you want to use the machine for. In my case I'd want to use it as a time capsule; so with all the old unpatched productivity software and games of that period. That way a LAN where I can access shares but nothing else might be the most secure way and still allow me to easily pull files from the web. One thing you didn't mention is if imaging the drive (with something like Macrium) is possible? That would be worth doing.
@233kosta2 жыл бұрын
If you airgap the network correctly, there's no harm in leaving it plugged in. I'd even go as far as to make sure none of the other nodes connect to the internet at all, or if they can - make damn sure they're secure. Disabling internet connectivity within the OS will do precisely nothing to mitigate the abundance of security holes that exist within the operating system itself. The only real way to keep it safe is to make sure that whatever network it touches doesn't go anywhere near the internet. Firewalled or otherwise.

For an XP browser security is only the starting point, the last 10 years of browser code changes is probably not supported. You end up with pages who's scripting, etc fails or is formatted in an unreadable way because things the software behind the page is is trying to do is unsupported.

I have double windows installed on my pc. XP and Windows 7. And I do have three Windows XP disk and one Windows 7. I can install a fresh install in the event that any Windows goes bad. XP still my favorite. I recently started to familiarize myself with Windows 7. Will move to Windows 10 in maybe 5 years.

@@adventuresinnostalgia I download windows 10 to see if it was good. To my surprise, it was good. People say it's free. But, it isn't After installing it, a few days later it started to ask me to register. I will buy the disk when I get ready to install it for keeps. I usually install double windows on my pc in the event that one goes bad, I have the other one while I repair the bad one.

I think that sometimes nostalgia clouds our judgement, and that is the case with XP. I used it for many years, and although I love the simplicity of the UI, it was also a security disaster from day 1. And let's not forget that some sites simply won't work with XP nowadays; I know, I've tried it. XP was a decent o/s for it's time, but it's time to bid it a fond farewell.

I am using XP for some ancient software I can't live without. My solution is to never go on the Internet and have XP on a virtual machine installed. All new software is downloaded and virus checked by the hosting operating system. This method has several benefits. I can use it on any system and can hop it over to another system without changes. A compromised system can be recovered. I don't need a firewall or an antivirus. I can work on two systems on the same hardware in the same moment. I can use Outlook Express, if I really need to, by using a special network connection on a Linux firewall, which allows only email traffic. I can continue to use old software without the back-draws of compatibility or license issues. On modern computers there is no speed loss compared to the original XP hardware systems.

We used XP until Chrome could no longer access web sites. So in 2022 we upgraded our 2008 Dell Computers adding 2g of ram so we had 4g to work with. Loaded Windows 10 and it's been running perfectly. My all time favorites are Windows 98 - XP - 7 - and now 10 all have been excellent performers. I am using Windows 11 at home and that works really well too.
@adventuresinnostalgia7 ай бұрын
That's interesting! Upgrading to Windows 10 sounds like it gave your 2008 Dells a new lease on life. Did you find it easy to upgrade the RAM and install the new OS yourself?
@bobsloan6947 ай бұрын
@@adventuresinnostalgia Yes was pretty easy. We had to find Ram Cards that worked with our mother board. In our case we had two slots and I think is was DDM4 type ram. So we could only find max out at 2 Gigs per card giving us 4 gigs of ram. The windows 10 operating system requires a minimum of 2 gigs so that allowed a the rest to run our programs. Right now we are sitting at about 75% memory usage doing regular work. We have been going along fine since then but when the time comes for windows 11 we will need new hardware as the units are maxed out and 11 requires a different chip operation.

I still use XP Pro SP3 , never used antivirus. Many bank cashpoint machines use it. Something I didn't see in the video was getting native OS TLSv1.2 functionality so that Outlook Express 6.0 and various other mainstream browsers continue to work. It's a bit fiddly to do with the registy but it's worth the effort
@danatmonst35943 жыл бұрын
Is this the reason that many sites are now "insecure" when using xp?
@jagmarc3 жыл бұрын
@@danatmonst3594 in the years since microsoft stopped updating XP, the majority of websites one by one stopped serving TLSv1.0 and lesser encryption such as SSLv3 which XP SP3 uses. These websites now serve TLSv1.2 and TLSv1.3 instead which normal XP can't access. Because many cashpoint ATMs still use XP, support was needed for TLS v1.1 and v1.2 and micrsoft then issued a manual update through its KB process. The manual update process is published around the net and involves manually adding some registry keys and a DLL file or something. When a site delivers content via SSL3 / TLSv1.0 (for compatibility to unmodified XP) a message appears saying "insecure".
@supergamingyt7280 Жыл бұрын
Very bad idea to use it as your main. Simply installing programs and using modern registry hacks doesn't make it any more secure than the modern Windows. If XP was secure by simply installing programs and tweaking things, Microsoft wouldn't keep making new versions of Windows and publish updates.

I know machine for tools that have Windows XP or Windows 7. Windows starts first, then the CNC system is started and takes over full screen. Fortunately, Windows runs in a restricted user account, Windows settings are not saved. Programs cannot be installed. To change something you have to call the service. An update to a newer operating system is not possible for the user. If something goes wrong, service has to come. Then the hard drive is formatted or replaced. Then a new image is copied. Then you start again from the beginning, but the CNC files (text files) are gone.

I still use Windows XP Home in a VM. I installed it on March 2010 in a Virtualbox VM and I used it since that time on my consecutive desktops: Pentium 4 HT; Phenom X3 8600; Phenom II X4 B97 and a Ryzen 3 2200G. A few times per week I use XP to play my music with WoW and TrueBass effects. I maintain the system using IOBIT software to get the application updates, do some malware checking and keep the system clean and in good working order. The firewall is closed for inbound traffic. I never use the Firefox browser nor an Email client, because I don't need it, I have other modern VMs for that :) My favorite operating systems are: Windows for Workgroups 3.11 (1993); Windows XP (2002); and Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (2016).

Hey! I got some several questions! 1. What does Security updates do to SP3? 2. Why having 4gb ram is not good. 3. Does using Outdated OS could drain your person info like bank accounts and etc. 4. Why Windows XP is filled so much loved by people. 5. Does using outdated OS could make your PC more visible to harmful malwares and hackers can track your IP Address and your personal info about yourself.
@BetaMaster23 жыл бұрын
1. make the operating system more... secure... 2. 4gb is the max for 32-bit systems although you can utilize more with the pae patch although it's not fully stable 3. yes, xp only has a certain amount of security updates and you are vulnerable. unless you have a good antivirus such as avg and a good firewall (pretty sure avg comes with its own firewall) 4. good question. idrk either. 5. same as 3
@fifaworldcup19943 жыл бұрын
Even using an AV wouldn't cut it, since the ones that still run on XP have outdated databases and there are still things that can slip through the cracks. Just don't use XP for your day-to-day life.

1. You can find ISO’s online although they might contain malicious code if it’s not from Microsoft 2. 4GB ram is not enough for most tasks today. 3. I wouldn’t recommend making financial decisions on windows xp, save them for mobile devices. 4. XP is a very stable and smooth os, aside from 7 and 8.1, xp also introduced rolling back drivers which is extremely useful. 5. No, as long as you are careful and take advantage of security methods, you will never have to worry about an invasion or infection, there will be lots of over reactive fear mongerling KZbinrs, including Microsoft them self, but they’re just overreacting
