Thousands of people from the Commonwealth moved to the UK in the mid-20th century - the 'Windrush generation'.
The government has now apologised, after it emerged that some were being incorrectly identified as illegal immigrants.
In angry scenes in Parliament, some critics suggested the policy is in keeping with the government's self-proclaimed "hostile environment" on immigration.
Emily Maitlis speaks to Sonia Williams, who was told she didn't have indefinite leave to remain in the UK, Trevor Philips, former chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission and Conservative MP Chris Philp.
Newsnight is the BBC's flagship news and current affairs TV programme - with analysis, debate, exclusives, and robust interviews.

+Cecil_Rhodes Citizenship and ethnicity aren't one and the same. In the U.S. and Canada there are no "ethnic Americans," and I'm sure if you go far enough back you'll find that the Brits are a hot soup of nomads from Europe stretching far back to Africa.

People from the Commonwealth countries were invited to come to Britain to help build up this country and this is how they treat the Windrush Generation .... People from the Caribbean also helped the British in world war 1 and 2 fighting along side British soldiers and still no recognition ..... Racism is alive and well and living in UK....) :

The council is paying 1000 Per Month to house White Migrants, in Bankrupt Britain. They used them after WW2, and during Slavery they got the same thing nothing. And today the head of these Commonwealth Countries, Voted for Prince Charles to be head of the Commonwealth, and Nazi Fascist Organisation using and exploiting Black people. Why was the Commonwealth citizen denied a vote on this.

They came to feather their own nests! the country was already built once! There's plenty of interviews with these people, and not one of them said they were here to rebuild Britain! It's always, came to find employment. And they were never invited, they just got offered a cheap seat on the boat. Nobody knew what to expect when they landed, it's a shame how they have been treated though 👍🇬🇧

If they have decietfully used and abused Black people let the result pass judgement on the wickedness and crimes against Black people over the years from slavery and Who commissioned Charles Darwin to write the Book to claim Black people are inferiour when its not true, Black people situation is based on lack of Privillege and fair plar and robbery and crimes against humanity, and Religous nonsense.

WHY YOU MOANING THEN
@Godsadvoc8
@Godsadvoc8 5 жыл бұрын
I hear you Wayne, and in the main I agree, only to add I have worked with a lot of Eastern Europeans and bless, they are hard working people, and because many black people assimilate to all the garbage we are being fed much of our youth have adopted the mantra of trying to get a lot having worked very little, and we need to be careful we do not jump on someone else's bandwagon. what offends me even more is we are still on average 'sufferers' rather than 'thriving' and as we are surrounded by rows and rows of pretty houses and buildings and facilities, this woman has to argue for a driving licence let alone a house, that the divisive statistics continue to describe as 'the average'. I was born here and my command of English is probably better than many who are thriving around me. I think Teresa May is clearly a puppet who is being dictated to by a hub of greedy bigots hiding in shadows, the only reason I have no sympathy for her, is because she could just turn and walk away, but hidden pressures will make her continue on her suicidal path, as this farce called Brexshit will implode, because much of the so called union who blindly voted to leave, had an objective before they ever considered the plan, and the complexity that comes with it will see not a meaningful deal done between Britain and the 27 that are the EU. Anyways, take care and be well friend.

I'm a windrush immigrant from Grenfell tower....honest guv! Now, where do I sign....the Ferrari is on order. Promoted not on merit, but purely to present the right face to win kudos for the Windrush debacle. We must be mad. It is like watching a nation, busily engaged in building its own funeral pyre. Famous words.I sometimes wonder if Theresa May was secretly working to ensure Jeremy Corbyn won the next election. Nobody has done more damage to the Tory brand than she has.Very dangerous to have someone from a protected group as Home Secretary and whose allegiances are, to say the least, questionable.This is the final insult to the British people. First it was the great Grenfell giveaway now it the windrush gold rush !fact David Cameron said publicly he hoped Javid would one day become PM..Such an obvious move. Anyone who thinks that this is genuine must be barmy..Seems anyone can say they originally came on the Windrush even if they they've spent the last 50 years on extended holiday in their home country and they will now get a British passport and compensation.. My dad came on the Windrush, my mum came on the Windrush my aunt came on the Windrush. My ........ I now rename this ship, The Win - Rush !

The scandals of today are rooted in the secrets of yesterday In leaving aside 2019 spare a thought for 1999, the year Sister Souljah published her "The Coldest Winter". Channel 4 hosted "A Blagger's Guide To Black History." It was also the year the BBC aired the documentary, "Playing The Race Card" detailing policy that was to impact upon us. It revealed that in The 1950s a Secret Civil Service Committee was established and that it "made the case for controls." Its complete title "Working party to report on the growing social and economic problems ariising from the influx into the United Kingdom of Coloured Workers from other commonwealth countries" (August 3 1955) In Unwanted: The Secret Windrush Files (2019), David Olusoga exposed the makings of the "hostile environment." In May 1947 The kingston Governor sent a telegram to the colonial office in Whitehall warning of the arrival. The Secretary of State was urged to do "everything possible to prevent the occurence." Even Pm Attlee referred to it as an incursion even suggesting they be diverted to east Africa to pick "ground-nuts." (By contrast an April 1947 document revealed how EVWs were warmly welcomed in the thousands.) Immediately upon arrival Mps wrote the PM weary this influx would "impair the harmony, strength and cohesion" and sought to "control immigration" In January 7 1955, The Spectator reported on "The Jamaican Flood." Ten days later British pathe aired "Our Jamaican Problem." This came within the context of the 1948s British National Act, and 1951 when Churchill lead the Conservatives back before raising immigration questions to his cabinet in 1952. They set up this working party and further claimed these immigrants were coming to steal dole money (State Assistance.) In June 1953 officials were informed to conduct a Secret race survey to gather statistics to evaluate this claim. It was only two weeks after Queen Elizabeth, Head of the Commonwealth had come to the throne. In 1956 health minister Enoch Powell visited Barbados to invite workers to the NHS but "the hospitality was soon replaced by hostility." In 1952 the McWarren-Walter Act restricted access to the Farm Work Programme in the USA. In 1954 Constantine Leary highlighted exclusion in "The Colour Bar." In 1957 immigrants continued to be met by the White Defence league culminating in the 1958 Notting Hill clashes. 1962 Commonwealth Immigrants Act of Harold Mcmillan looked to control immigration on the basis of employment prospects. Rab Butler opined "the great merit of this scheme is that it can be presented as making no distinction on grounds of race or colour although in practice" this discretion would be applied. He continued "We must recognise that although the scheme purports to relatively solely to employment and be non-discriminatory, it's aim is entirely social and it's restrictive effect, is intended to, and would in fact, operate on coloured people almost exclusively." In 1962 Jamaica and Trinidad were granted independence, as was Barbados in 1966. In 1965 Race Relations Act was passed (amended in 2000, the year Damiola Taylor was stabbed.) In 1967 CARD petitioned to have the Minstrel Show (1958-78) pulled from air. In the 70s it was just one of the shows provoking race alongside Mind Your Mouth and Love Thy Neighbour. In 1968 the emergency commonwealth immigrants act was passed to curb British passport holding Kenyans. It was amended when the 1971 Immigration Act "marked the end of black immigration for settlement" demanding people be burdened to prove that they are British: "but in the meantime, life went on." In 2014 Lunar House formalised the hostile environment. "...yet here we are fighting to breathe, just to prove that we have the right to breathe." "...after 51 years they're going to grant me something you were legally entitled to."

They arrived here on their parents' passport because when they came here the country was part of the commonwealth country. The government should have kept record and or given them British status when they came. Remember the British then was in ruins and coaxed Caribbean nations to come to the UK to help to rebuild the country! As far as I am concerned it as though these people are used then disposed of!

chris bennett I arrived in the UK, did what was expected of me in order to become a naturalised citizen, paid the appropriate fees, did the test, learnt the language then threw my old passport in the bin where it belongs. If I can do that in 5 years, what’s the excuse of these people? They’ve had ample time between themselves and their parents, in most of these cases they’re even from English speaking islands. I’m not, but I managed it. I’d say they’re either just lazy or stupid, possibly both. Fuck you too.

Jermanos Petalos think you’ve missed the point, don’t get caught out. Knowing and understanding your status and making sure it’s all tied down should be one of your priorities. In effect nothing has changed, the government are only doing what they should’ve been doing for a long time, immigration is a huge concern for the majority of the population and the government are responding to that. The problem is that people who came as children with their parents for some reason believe like magic it’s another persons fault because their parents failed to register them as British citizens. If I was Theresa May I wouldn’t apologise for a government finally doing their jobs in finding who and who doesn’t have a right to be here.

K Edmodson Most people who have lived in the UK and worked for a lifetime would agree with you regardless of their ethnic background. We are going to be facing some tough decisions. It was incorrect of you to say that people have had seventy years. Most of the first wave of immigrants have passed away, the issue will be with their children, such as this lady. There may even be cases where both parents were not registered as British and children born in the UK after 1972 could be deported. Before the cut off in the eighties, the situation received widescale publicity. This did not just apply to the Caribbean but to other parts of the world as well. Many Caribbeans were saying they did not want to lose their identity, well, it does cut both ways.

You’re chatting rubbish.....many of these people have lost their jobs, which has then resulted in them losing their homes, even the right to medical treatment. Imagine if someone turned up at your house and revoked your right to work, which then caused you to lose your home because you couldn’t pay your mortgage. Or you caught cancer but was told you had to pay for your treatment. Are you honestly telling me you should not get compensated for that? How the hell do you even begin to put your life back together? These by the way are all things that have happened to people, some of which have lived, worked , paid taxes, or even served in the British military and been here for over 50 years. They are not illegal, the government messed up here and needs to put it right. You are entitled to your opinion, but it’s the sheer lack of humanity shown by people like you who just dismiss these people’s plight with a stupid throw away comment that angers me. Let’s hope that you or anyone you love who is facing adversity is never dismissed in such a glib way.

the letter says it is perfectly possible to apply for indefinite leave to remain. Looks less like racism and more like someone just didn't understand the bureaucratic process. Irritating, but something people have to manage all the time.

agent x The British empire no longer exists, so nice try. Non-whites will never be British, as they can't appreciate British culture in the true sense, which is, it was all created by BRITISH BLOOD only English,Scots,Welsh,Northern Irish people, all of whom are white, can appreciate British culture. Now go to hell, you leftist parasite!

Well, if you are a Citizen of SA then you have every right to call yourself an African. The difference in this case is , if you maybe go back 100 years ago, your ancestors were colonialists who just simply went into Africa and took land, killed millions of the indigenous people and started your businesses that way. These people on the other hand applied to come to the UK, got accepted and worked in the country, In some cases some came after WW2 on the basis that they were to help rebuild the country.
