Indeed, and that's also what statistics on street fights show. A large fraction of such confrontations at some point wind up on the ground. Yet, there still is no shortage of traditional martial art practitioners who believe that their standup skills alone are enough to protect them in a real-world skirmish. They don't bother to learn takedown defense, much less basic grappling. Many don't even spar because they think that they can pull off a last minute, fight-ending eye poke, groin strike or knee shot against an enraged, adrenaline-fueled moving target. Naivete at its finest!

Tbf there will still be significant differences stylistically between trad arts and mma when said trad arts are practiced with aliveness, even if some fundamentals of real alive striking and grappling will be similar and wont look like the average unrealistic karate bunkai application you will get in vanilla strip mall karate. The reason a lot of trad guys cant apply even the good stuff, both unique and similar, in their styles is because they dont spar so they tend to fall somewhere inbetween an untrained person and someone decently competent and you get crappling and shitty brawling. Jun fan kickboxing is unique compared to mma striking and muay thai but you are not gonna be good at using any form of realistic kb if you dont learn to apply it.

Few years back, I am in an Aikido (yes, I like it) class and this hulk looking rolls in with a couple friends. Starts the whole talking shit thing and all. The Sensei just kinda waits for the talk to stop, then asks if they'd like to join in. Well, they did. And more shenanigans ensued, kinda like this video. At some point, the mouthiest guy of the group gets right in the face of the instructor, who'd had enough. The Aikido instructor hits the guy solid with a 1-2 punch. Almost knocks him out. As his friends are carrying him out, he is saying, that's not fair, that's not Aikido, that's boxing, as blood is pouring from his mouth😁😋 The Aikido instructor takes like two seconds to straighten himself out, then continues the class like nothing had happened! Beautiful👍👍

The open dialogues between the different arts practitioners are how we learn. I've had so many conversations with people and learned a ton of interesting tidbits (that I have now mostly forgotten). My instructor had a method for addressing rowdy participants though, and I kinda feel like every instructor should have something in their pocket to deal with situations like this. This wasn't the way, in this case the WC teacher should've asked the "jkd" guy to just leave and trespassed him if he didn't.

What I took away most from the video when I first saw it-aside from how martial arts training often flies out the window in an unstructured, emotional situation-is how all that shit could’ve been avoided if one or both men had simply chosen to stay calm and disengage from the conflict. That’s it. No physical posturing or verbal escalation, no clear and embarrassing loss of temper…just walk away. Y’know, like any normal person would do who isn’t trained to beat people up or isn’t seeking to do so even if they can. And I’m growing increasingly tired of “fighting” being defined by one-on-one unarmed scenarios like this one. Just for the sake of argument, what if the challenger had pulled a concealed weapon or made a weapon from all the random shit lying about the space? Conversely, what if the instructor’s students had chosen to jump in for a collective beatdown a la Good Fellas? These are very real and very dangerous things that can happen that have little to do with MMA training or proving that JKD is better than Wing Chun or vice versa. Finally, the various stories I’ve heard of Bruce Lee being challenged (aside from the almost farcical Oakland showdown) seem to share two elements: 1) the exchanges were over almost immediately, and 2) the challengers were left impressed by his skill and with no hard feelings, sometimes (as with the karate guy in Seattle whom Bruce’s students thought had been killed, lol) even asking to train with him. Frankly, I find that more impressive than any ass-whooping he dished out.

I don't understand what that JKD kid was expecting. Someone invites you to home or dojo they have shown you respect and a degree of appreciation. It is a perfect time to forge long lasting bonds. In the martial arts world these bonds progress the art and sport and developed a supportive environment to help students achieve greatness. I would have sat down, shut up and observe. In such a setting offer gifts, suggest a BBQ and hang out time. And help tidy up that yard Lol!

The kid's kick reminded me of Octavio because it's fast but have no leverage, no pressure forward with body weight, no body rotation. A real stop sidekick has all 3 elements : linear, body rotation, and body weight going forward, the result will always be a broken knee cap if it landed successfully Also I remember the context is the kid was invited by a student, acting like an ass for the entire session so the teacher let him play around with the wooden dummy while he teaches other students. Later on, while the teacher was explaining a stance, he shout it out loud "your groin is exposing" and then the next thing is the video, where he explained why his "JKD" stance is better. The teacher keep the gloves on and only slap him to keep him away from injuriesz which might lead to a law suit, which the kid did tried to pull off later on but failed miserably as the law saw it as justified self defense. The whole thing was explained under the comment in Mcdojo life's video about this subject

He then wanted to pick a date. This man can’t fight he is from da streets. He wanted full mma small gloves “sparring”. Why do people who cant fight come to Muay Thai gyms and think if they do mma rules with small gloves magically they can win? He finally came in when he knew I was out of town and sparred my competition team. The man didn’t make it 30 seconds into a round because he gassed. And my guys just played with him. Assuming the kid actually had a teacher, then this all could have been prevented if that teacher had taught his student how to act when visiting another school. Martial arts should not only teach you how to fight, it should make you a better person. And part of becoming a better person is manners and respect. Without that, we might as well be doing a sport, not an art.

IN JKD you can use all then regarding the situation of these 2 boys it appears that the boy was invited into this person's backyard for a pretext of fighting. It can be seen that the jkd boy has been training for a short time, in fact he shows the basics, among others, even in an unprofessional manner. Never go to a martial arts show on the street or in someone else's house, always do it in your backyard PS I knew a regional kickboxing champion who went to gyms to take lessons under the guise of being a beginner, just to punch someone, in martial arts sometimes you meet people who are fanatics who don't mind learning but want to hurt someone.

Looking at this yes, it is largely a bit of a barn brawl and not great but tbf there is some flavour of their arts that kind of makes it in there, mostly in regards to the wing chun dude since the other dude spends most of the vid being beaten up. The wing chun guy for instance makes some sloppy attempt at some sort of slappy chop strike, at least knows how to sort of punch and is hitting vertically. The jkd guy does attempt a round kick when he gets some mental and physical space and the wing chun dude especially is better than the average untrained rando. Still a mess tho.

My point is, if you are saying you are about wingchun, then fight like bad mma why not just train Mma and leave the wingchun alone?? Obviously, you know the material of wingchun and jkd knows how to demonstrate it but can not do it under pressure. If you want to learn how to fight, you have to practice fighting with someone fighting back.

To be fair, real JKD, explained from original branch, is indeed does not suitable for dueling context like MMA. And I found that it's the best answer. The context is sudden violence where you either sucker punch the other guy if you think he's a threat or try to intercept him with something when he tried to sucker punch you. LOL I love when I watch a video and I see a guy with no martial arts background trashing real martial artists. Cracks me up every time😂😂😂

He clearly needs to spar more - the fact you can't see it tells me more than you know. The fact you never sparred is extremely telling.

@Metrolina Martial Arts Are you calling me a Liar? I am a red belt in Okinawan karate. There's no sparring. You need to watch his videos on his channel before you judge. But you don't even have a martial arts background so you have no place to judge.

The fact there is no sparring and you're a red belt is incredibly depressing

Seen it, jorts guy is delusional and not fluid despite a lot of actual knowledge his implementation is too concrete and doesn't scale and his attitude is mad questionable.
