WINGERWORTH ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: - The council offices moved from Chesterfield to Wingerworth a few years ago. The old council buildings are still stood empty. - There were tales that during the Napoleonic War, French POWs of the officer class were allowed slightly more freedom than was supposed to be permitted, and were to be seen making the journey from their place of confinement in Chesterfield to Wingerworth Hall, where presumably they could hear Catholic Mass, as well as marry the local talent.

My Grandad was the Landlord of the Hunloke Arms in the late 1940's & I spent many happy hours there in my younger days!

Avenue Coke Plant was erected agin the coal mines, which flooded just before Birdholme. Twas a similar situation to Sutton Scarsdale, which opened Arkwright pit at the bottom of its hill/garden, thus the Hunloke opened the avenue sited pits at the bottom of their garden at the bottom of the hill their Hall/ mansion was sited atop.

As I thought then. That was always one of the anomalies with council buildings locally, that NE Derbyshire's wasn't actually in NE Derbyshire. I suspect no plans to renovate the old ones yet.

You didn’t include Hockley Lane which was the lane that led up to Wingerworth Hall (via Londedge Lane).
