People are selfish. It’s really sad that they prefer dead specimens than to see them thrive in the wild. 😢😢😢

These “collectors” hearts are filled with pure narcissism and greed.

I don't understand this... What's the difference between a collection of dead butterflies and a collection of high res pictures of them? It's such a narrow minded and selfish world view that one would have hoped would have gone extinct in the 1900's if not 1950's. However, still here it is. "Oh what a beautiful insect! It's so graceful, luminescent and enchanting... Let's kill it and stick in some glass for all time!"

I imagine what would happen in a parallel universe if life-sized butterflies smacked us to death and traded humans to show off in glass boxes like this x-x scary thought

Making something illegal doesn’t stop its trade, it only makes it go underground! Far better to teach these people how to farm raise them!

many are collected because they are rare. Raising them will defeat the purpose. People should stop selling everything they can reach

@@lenas6246 that’s the point I’m making, if you don’t want them to go extinct and make it even more expensive and rare to own them, you have to find a way to produce more! The more you produce the less valuable they are and therefore less valuable they are, the more likely they will rebound successfully! It’s worked in Africa with lions and other large mammals!

This video is so educational, really sheds light on the importance of butterfly conservation and how beneficial butterfly farming can be rather than hunting these species from the wild

This made me sad and sick, because I bought a few collectible butterflies at Bantimurung national park when I was little. Monarch butterflies, swallowtails, the truth is a hard pill to swallow.

Why do people need to always possess something beautiful? Isn't it enough to watch them alive and thriving?

Hiruki is compelled to make each collection as full as possible, compelled or obsessed? Obsessed. Possession, a contempt for the life of the butterflies, their possession to some make this unremarkable ignorant man interesting. The best that can happen is that these specimens may be donated to a museum. It is a form of monetary Imperialism.

Why can’t they farm them so as not to risk extinction?

at 38.18 the collector criticized that the development in SG killed off more butterflies than they removed from the wild.

If I have to look at a dead beautiful butterfly 🦋 to find some selfish peace of mind; I don’t deserve the air I robbed it of.

So sad to see the greed to collect butterflies as a form of hunting trophies. Ironically the collectors in this video are at an age that means they won’t live to experience the eventual ecological consequences of extinct species.

Why the reporter ask if can ship the butterflies to Kuala Lumpur and not Singapore, or Japan? Afterall this is a Singapore production and also, the collectors featured are from Japan. Why drag KL into this trade for this production?

The bat trade within Indonesia is just as harmful to their populations. Some are now near threatened due to the mass poaching of entire colonies at a time. Please I urge you to investigate this.

you never see it in documentaries etc but towards the end of their life their wings get damaged and scales fall all so they are "imperfect". Actually i think some of there are the most beatutiful ive seen. Torn ends, holes in their wings and they are still flying but i imagine not very important for a collector

Im sorry but I just don't see the point of collecting anything that you cannot display in such a way that you can see them around your home everyday. If you have to store your collection away due to having so much then I don't see any difference in looking at the collection in a book rather than in person. Its just greedy.

After 50 years of rule - uninterrupted - the PAP has failed to develop sustainable (population growth, education and economic development) policies that will enable locals to drive our economy, that is, creating jobs and attracting investments, with foreigners playing a complementary role. Instead, the situation has been turned on it head. Foreigners are now the main force behind our economy and Singaporeans are playing the supporting role. Lees’ words, not mine. Dr Chee Soon Juan

I think they can get dried out and they inject high percentage alcohol not only to preserve it, but to soften it as well so it can be manipulated into the position you prefer without damaging it!

@@apemancommeth8087 Or warm water. It's called relaxing; rehydrating the dead butterfly to 'set' it for a pinned collection. The insect will dry out in presentable form over a period of weeks, or months.
