Tears in my eyes writing this. Too much of this weeks video reminded me of my dad. He left us at the age of 84 in 1999, not a bad life. I’m not sure what kind of animal Ember is but could you imagine a better companion for an Alaskan lifestyle? Bless all three of you beautiful souls. Cheers!!!

Interesting because you came to mind when we were editing it. I saw a part where I could transition the drone from out the back of the van into the sky and went with it and you came to mind. You know Ember doesn't know she's a dog, This winter she will be a fish out of water chasing disappearing snowballs again. I don't remember if I told you the story of when Jim and I were on a trip together and my dad had been on my mind a lot. Jim was on the motorcycle in front of me and we were nearing the area where I spread my dads ashes. Along the way there were many places we could have stopped along the way and Jim pulled into a turn off, into some rough road and when the river bank opened up and I saw where we were I lost it. Sat there for a long time telling Jim stories of growing up on the river with him. Interesting how they return to us in our memories and linger for awhile. I hope the memories are good ones and you're having a beautiful day. ❤️

My 2021 Revel arrived at my dealer a few days ago. They are working on getting it ready to show me how everything works, for me to inspect its every nook and cranny, for me to test drive it and for me to give them my check to pay for it. It will then be up to the dealer to get it registered and let me take it home. You guys are the best Winnebago Revel salespeople! Winnebago should give you a commission.

Hi Ken. We wish you the best of luck and hope the process is smooth for you. We've been paying close attention to the 2021 and peoples experiences with it. I think commissions equal bias and what we really want of our this is what we're getting. That sense of community and sharing what we love. We have slowly very very slowly started opening ourselves back up to meeting people along the way but finding these isolated places has been a life saver. Please keep us posted as to how things go for you!

You have no idea how much I envy you two. You said : "I have no idea where we're going today" ? - I paused the video right there... I had an executive position with a pharmaceutical company-- living the American dream -- purchasing houses.. dabbling in real estate ... I'm 58 years old..currently looking at two laptops, my cell and a double monitor desktop. Minus my pension(s) -- just to open the door of my hauler.. crack open a beer.. curl my toes in the AZ desert sand and listen to the coyotes in the distance.

Good morning Jim. It's still always so strange to think your spring is coming. The way Ember just slowly slid over to that puddle when her and Jim returned was so darn predictable. 😂 I always know when Jim is trying to butter me up. I'm perfectly fine hanging out by the river and he has to go push it because he saw other people going up there. It was like watching a little kid watch other kids play with toys he doesn't have. 😂. So much fun. It was great to have you with us, hope you're having a wonderful day down there! ❤️

I absolutely loved your take on, “I don’t know”. That’s what map books were invented for. I’ve opened up my Gazateer on more than one occasion to a random page and was determined to find something on that particular map to go see and explore. That turns “I don’t know” into, well, this place might just be something cool that I haven’t seen yet! The food thing is easily solvable when it comes to your particular living situation. There’s only so many things you have in your cupboards. Just set Jim loose on it and before you know it, he’ll have food whipped up, even if it’s just Chili-Mac! I loved your comment about your Revel’s tires being in motion. The idea of the tires taking you down roads, be they gravel, mud, or snow, the trail is advanced upon by your Revel. It’s also worth noting that the tires have spun without you going anywhere in that deep snow. Luckily, Jim now knows about Traction Control! 😂. Your comment, “This is what life was like before you could look things up before you got there.”, is spot on. That’s what true adventure is. Just remember, every single road that you drive down was once a trail that people in much rougher conditions first blazed before machinery (or sometimes horse-powered apparatus) turned that trail into the road that’s there now. Those first explorers really didn’t know what was one hundred feet ahead of them. At least now we can be spoiled with our GPS. 😃. And yes, I chuckled at you touching the tree’s protruding bits! 😂 Ember is priceless! All water is created equal in her eyes, and a mud puddle is the same as a rushing creek or a tranquil lake! The mud puddle was simply all she could find, and the way she sees it, it’s your fault for parking next to it. You practically gave her the okay to lay down in it! LOL Seeing her in the stream is more than enough proof that she likely thinks she’s part fish! 😂. The wild cranberries were an interesting thing to see. I wasn’t aware that they grew outside of the water. Will you be making something with them after the first frost? It’s also great that you showed the fireweed when it was done, which according to you means that it’s officially Fall. It seemed fitting that you’d put the fireweed into the fire. Has a whole Phoenix feel to it. Your ending monologue was fantastic. You brought back memories of Doogie Houser and the things he’d type on his computer at the end of every episode. You’re absolutely right though. Just think if you’d started this journey a decade ago. Just think of all you’ll have accomplished a decade from now. The benefit of looking back down the trail is knowing that regardless of where you go, you’re never at the end until you give up. Keep up the great work you two!

For some reason Alaskans call these red berries "cranberries" They have a tart taste and smell like wet socks. I haven't decided if I want to pick them this year. If I do I think I will have to pick and make in the same day because the smell really is a lot to take in. I'm really glad you enjoyed this one and picked out all the details I hope people find. I played with all kinds of things with this one on the camera and added depth to it with the VoiceOver because of course you're correct, they're more work but they add another layer to the story. I like how you mentioned that tires can spin without motion too. I guess that's kind of like a tiger pacing in a cage. Like so many have been feeling. I do have to tell ya, yesterday Jim said, "Huh, we haven't heard from Brian, I hope he's doing okay." I thought it was so darn cute. I told him you wait and take your time and take it all in. You always have fabulous insight. It's been POURING rain here. Today we were supposed to do some additional insulation on the front part of the cab but all I really want to do is sip coffee and listen to the rain. Oh and watch old movies. Right now it's Men who Stare at Goats. So, my wheels have traction control on today. I think it's that fall sluggishness. Oh, and I'm going through Jet fuel smell and altitude withdrawals too. This is the first time in YEARS I've stayed in one State for more than a week 🙃 Have a great week. xoxo

Good morning, this is Bill from NC. I so look forward to your weekly video. As always, Beautiful video. Jim is a very smart man. Brings his Queen coffee in bed. My regret is that I'll probably not be able to get to Alaska in my lifetime. ☹ Alas, is why I am so excited to watch the videos. We have family here and I won't tear up the family. Jim's cooking looks delicious. Had to laugh when Ember sat in the puddle. Great video graphing, taking the shots under the van. I too would be annoyed about all the trash out there. When you guys are out there in the backwoods, how long can you stay out there before you have to find a place to do a dump? Music and the scenery at the end was awesome. Looking forward to seeing next weeks video. Stay safe. Remember to wear your bear protection. Sending virtual hugs and some ❤❤❤

Good morning Mr. Bill. I think the longest we have stayed in one spot at this point has been a week and from what I've seen I can estimate that for the both of us we can go just beyond that. As for trash we compact it, (Jim likes his cans) and burn the paper. With water we can go about two weeks, but trash is something we keep a close eye on. But we usually end up looking for other places to hang out. Generally when we get gas we dump our trash and find a pit toilet for the cassette toilet. Smart on not breaking up the family Mr. Bill. Sending you some love from Alaska and we will see you next week. Have a good one! xoox

I think it's interesting because I know so many people selling their homes and either relocating or downsizing and get this...I'm jealous. 😂. I guess I'm eager to get to that point but have to wait a few years. I'm dreaming of a small plot of land, with water for Ember, to use as an Air BnB when we aren't there. Certainly a sellers market and I have no doubt that perfection will find you. As soon as you see what you're looking for you'll just know. The spot in this video has an area that rolls down towards the River and I told Jim I wanted to move there forever and ever, but he had a point, we couldn't leave anything we built in an area like that because it would be vandalized. I've seen your pistol in several of your videos...is that for the 2 legged or 4 legged varmits? Do you carry bear spray when on hikes? Have you had bears come to your campsites when you are cooking?
@WingsandWheelsAlaska
@WingsandWheelsAlaska 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen. Our pistols are for whatever creature decides to pose a threat. 💁🏻‍♀️. And honestly I'm not overly concerned with either of them. We've been doing this for years in various vehicles and we have never had a bear wander into camp while cooking or not. It's something just to be aware of at all times. It's funny because there would be so many AMAZING videos out here if wildlife was as ambitious as people tend to think they are. Bears genuinely have no interest in us unless we startle them or unless they have turned into "trash bears" and have learned that campsites are a source of food and in that case Fish and Game generally on top of it. We never want to minimize the threat but we also don't want to overdramatize it either. Excellent question thank you!

The end point is a lake but there is some pretty deep mud up at the top of the hill so need a suspension lift and bigger tires to get much past the point we stopped. A permanent lift. The airbags don't do well in cold weather. I've had a vehicle with them in the past and oh boy they were a pain. Can't blame her for finding the puddle but I almost left here there to run behind us on the way back. But that's what real dogs do. Ember isn't a real dog. Wings and Wheels Alaska I can see the cold having issues with air bags. Between the air and the rubber. Yrs and yrs and yrs ago a buddy of mine put adjustable shocks which would raise the car 4”, the thing is they used nitrogen...I wonder Howe that would work in the cold? A,loss no hides if they even make them any more. This was over 20yrs ago. :). Sometimes one has to walk, walk long enough to when they meet themselves. Then they will have the knowledge to answer the question or questions they have. wether they need to find themself, or figure out what to do next...be it life, business, relationship. It could be one is so lost they have to walk to find out who they truly are and what they want to be. This walk may be a physical walk or a mental walk or a combination of both.

I like how you tied all that together. It's true. You know I teach business courses and teaching life skills and business skills is exactly the same. I hope to travel Alaska for most of 2021 and maybe more. I don't want to miss an essential item or plan too much unnecessary items. I totally enjoy this channel and have gleaned a lot of valuable travel information from you and Jim (Tim/Kim not so much). If you want to PM a list to me that would be awesome. If you would rather e-mail it I can provide my address for you. Keep doing what you are doing. I look forward to your adventures....still catching up on your videos.

Paula, that's actually a really good question. Jim and I were just talking about this actually because I was trying to figure out if I need anything new for the winter and budget it. I'll be honest...I'm not sure I'm the best person to ask because I don't put a lot of thought into clothing. I'm incredibly minimalistic and will wear something until it falls apart. Right now I am wear a sweatshirt from American Eagle I bought 20 years ago when American Eagle had quality clothing. 😂. Anyways. Yes. My Essentials for All Season.1. Two pairs of boots. 1 XtraTuff rain boots, 1 pair of winter sorells. 1 hiking shoe, 1 flip flop. I pretty much live in my hiking boots and xtratuffs. 2. Pants. I layer leggings. Currently I own 4 pairs. 1 wool blend warm pair. On top of the leggings I wear a Northface waterproof pant. (It starts with an A, but I forget what the name if it is). Seriously, I live in that combination of leggings and north face layer. Even in the summer. I have 1 skirt, tank top combination I wear with the leggings but I think I wore the skirt once this summer? I have a pair of warm snow pants as well, they go on top of my north face pants and leggings when it's REALLY cold. 3. Tops. Sweatshirts and hoodies with a wool layer under. I think I own about 4 sweatshirts and steal Jims on occasion. I have three pairs of Buffalo wool socks that have lasted me over a year and have been washed fewer times than I'd like to admit.I also have one pair of kneehigh socks I wear under my leggings. Most importantly, it's layers up here. You'll see in the videos I even have my coat on in the van sometimes and it's not because I'm cold inside it's because I've spent so much time getting all those darn layers on it's a pain to take them off. 😁. I'm seriously super simple. What I would recommend is coming up here light, and seeing what you need along the way. You won't be at a loss for a REI or a Cabellas if you're in need of something. I also have a solo trip planned coming up and when I do that it might be a good time to show my clothing and where I store it etc. I have 1 bin and 1 bag and a bag for my girl stuff and it's really all I need. I love this idea and I might run with it and make it easier and show it to you. This is super exciting to hear too. Please please keep us posted on your adventure up here and maybe we can meet up. This winter we're hoping to go deeper and find even more isolated locations. We will keep you posted!

1:47 "I don't know" and "I know" most commonly used phrases in conversation in the USA. That includes corporate America too !!! You would explain some technical subject and the other person would reply - yea I know !!! I was like you know ??? If you knew why did ya ask me in the first place.... Well, just kidding but that's how the conversation goes !!!! Then when someone says - I don't know... I was like how come you are so stupid that you don't know the basic thing ??? Regret It's not for laws I've broken That bitter tears I've wept, But solemn vows I've spoken And promises unkept; It's not for sins committed My heart is full of rue, but gentle acts omitted, Kind deeds I did not do. I have outlived the blindness, The selfishness of youth; The canker of unkindness, The cruelty of truth; The searing hurt of rudeness . . . By mercies great and small, I've come to reckon goodness The greatest gift of all.
