Walter Palmer YES!!! I'm 60, and while I started paying attention to music in the 60's, the 70's and 80's are the decades that music forged my life. So many great musicians back then. Kids today have no clue what great music really is. My sons are 31 and 29. They heard the "oldies" that we listened to when we took a trip for a long weekend with their grandparents, and I'm amazed at how much music they love from back then and really don't like much that's out there now.

@@eleetse6701 You misunderstood. I've watched this performance of this song on this channel about 6 times. The song? Hundreds of times, like you. I believe it was the most played song on the radio for a while. Damn right, it's what makes me live. I'm nw living in Switzerland and trying to educate my daughters' friends who are very musical about this song. One girl is very talented, a great singer, and I think she could do a good version. Singing in English would be no problem since she can speak at least 5 languages fluently, an amazing thing. But it is hard for the younger generation to realize the idea behind this song. They've lost their freedom.

Most people don't realize what an amazing musician Glen was. He played on so many albums as a studio musician as well. He played on many Beach Boys albums, and actually took over for Brian Wilson on a tour and only had 2 weeks to prepare....he played bass and sang Brian's vocals. The Alice Cooper interviews about Glen are really amazing as well, as they were great pals.

With Chet Atkins, Willie and Waylon, Crystal Gayle, and Roy Clark not only looking on but, enjoying and being astonished by Glens mastery of it all. Glen got screwed, as far as his image, with how they tried to middle of the road him on his weekly TV show. He was a bad ass studio cat, kind of the American version of Jimmy Page, who played, often uncredited, on everything. Glen did pop, rock, folk, country, all of it. My dad loved Glen and had Glen's big first album on 8track in the car. It really grew on me, even though I was heavily into Hendrix, Cream, Doors, etc. My bf played guitar and Glen was one of his idols, even though he didn't play that genre. I learned a lot about those guys from him, esp about not discounting musicians because they weren't young and cool. Some real luminaries here.

The thing about Glen as a guitarist is that he had such a great voice that his playing was sometimes overlooked by the general public. But musicians always knew he was a guitar monster!

I find glen's guitar playing to be superb, but his voice to be pedestrian. elvis's 1969 interpretation is the gold standard. the soul depth and diversity of elvis presley, puts you on those train tracks in the bitter cold rain. glen and john's voices are pretty pedestrian.

Great musicians can often play multiple genres. A great example is Bluesman Luther "Guitar Jr." Johnson (who played in Muddy Waters band for years, appears in movie "The Blues Brothers") wrote "Texas Cowboy", a beautiful COUNTRY SONG - and if he thinks he's got the right audience on a given night, he'll bust it out - always great!

Ricky Nelson told the story of being in a studio in Los Angeles and he could hear what was going on in the other room. He needed someone to play guitar on a recording and he sent someone to get him. They had never met. When asked if he would play on the recording he said sure. So they handed him the music snd he said I don’t need that. Just start playing. He was perfect and amazed everyone.

Early 80's I'm in junior high and I was watching MTV. This guy was interviewing a band and asked their lead guitarist who the best guitarists in the world were at that moment. I seriously thought the guy was joking when he said "Besides Glen Campbell? It wouldn't be fair to lump him in with the rest". I remember thinking I wonder what his problem with Glen is? Now I realize he was 100% serious. I can't remember the name of the band,I think they were one of the ones who got their 15mins and then disappeared.

Another thing great about Glen Campbell and Roy Clark is how they helped other great artists get ahead. One in particular is Alan Jackson. Alan's wife, I think was an airline flight attendant who met Glen Campbell and talked to him about Alan's ability and the rest is history. They both helped promote so many. Same here. I don't remember a time without Glen Campbell. Funny thing about the 60s turning into the 70s is that radio stations didn't always follow their format strictly. Campbell easily fit in on any genre of stations back then and nobody would bat an eye.

Was so sad watching his downhill slide as his health declined. I was working at a casino when he came during his farewell tour. I never got to see the show but a fan told me it was bittersweet to see him at less than his best. He was a magical performer during his prime. Too bad a lot of people don't realize how many songs he played on. He'll never be forgotten. Thanks for your great reaction and explanation of this man's playing.

I've loved Glen Campbell since I was a child when I picked up empty deposit soda bottles on the side of the road to save 45 cents and bought my first record "Witchita Lineman" - Glen stands head and shoulders above other artists from this era for all the reasons you describe and more. I was fortunate and privileged to see Glen Campbell perform on his final tour after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and his performance was still so beautifully clear, melodic, and precise. Everyone in the audience knew he was very ill, and the love and support shared between the audience and Glen was palpable. It was unlike any other concert I’ve ever attended. I've watched this video a few times. These are the greatest musicians country music had to offer in that day. The smiling faces of those greats watching in awe of how good Glen plays is more entertaining then watching Glen play. The ability to play fast, intricate lines like it's stroll in the park while smiling and having fun is such a additional great skill Glen, Roy, and Jerry Reed had.

Keep up the good work, Fil That banjo player in the background is Carl Jackson, Glen Campbell's banjo player for years. The great song was written by an earlier Campbell banjoist, the incomparable John Hartford. Campbell was one of LA's "Wrecking Crew" along with Leon Russell and many others, all superlative session musicians in the late 50s through the early 70s. One of the greatest country singers is shown in the audience, the remarkable Gene Watson. I enjoy all your videos. I appreciate your appreciation of good music. Peace!

He was a member of the Wrecking Crew that was the ultimate studio musicians from the 60's and early 70's that went out on his own. One of probably 5 best guitarists of that Era. He played on Rock, Big Band and country. Sad to see his decline with that terrible disease that finally took him. He was a legend and will be dearly missed but at least we have the music to remind us and bring a smile and even a tear.

The Beach Boys were among my top 3 bands of all time. Glen played with the Beach Boys - as a BASS PLAYER. And as one of the 37 members of the Wrecking Crew, he has appeared on countless recordings. For me, Roy Clark and Glen Campbell are the best guitar entertainers I've ever heard and seen.

Glen was the top requested studio guitarist from the mid 60's thru mid 70's. He's played on a lot of top hits over the years, and most people never even knew!

Seen it, too. As great as Roy Clark was . . . Glen owned that performance. I put him right next to Chet Atkins. Other greats of that era included Jerry Reed and Jim Stafford. Much as I do not like them personally, Keith Urban and Vince Gill are among the best today. Why God chose to bless them so much . . . I'll probably never understand.

And as such, he (Lee) would be the first to tell you how much he respects what Glen Campbell accomplished, the markets he opened up and his overall impact on the world of music. The true greats do not "wipe the floor" with other musicians, but instead respect them and look for things they can emulate. Do a search sometime for an interview Joe Walsh did about how he continuously studies other guitar players, in particular their RIGHT HAND technique and how they hold their picks, or if they finger pick, the position of their hands, etc. Joe Walsh is as good as they get and he doesn't look to "wipe the floor" with anyone. Instead, as most pros does, he looks to learn from his peers.

Yep, Roy is fantastic. All of those early country pickers had it down. The song you are talking about is Malaguena. Normally when it is played, it is finger picked, but Roy flat picks it which takes some serious stamina and co-ordination. What he does at the 1:50 mark is really impressive too! Both I had seen before. But I grew up in Arkansas where Glenn was born and have admired his talent all my life. Roy Orbison was my Dad’s favorite guitarists and a favorite of mine. As a man who grew up around music, (my dad, uncles, brothers, and myself are all singer songwriters) watching you and listening to your enthusiasm about these often forgotten guitar hero’s blows me away. What a great idea you had to include all of these great players, their different genres, and styles of playing. My hat is off to you. A quick word about the ethos of the southern gentleman. The humility of these virtuosos is impressive, isn't it? You'll see it in Chet, Jerry, Roy and the other masters from the southern US. Their Mama's wouldn't have allowed any boasting or attitude no matter how much adulation they received growing up or "big" they became as adults. I wish you had been able to see this entire show. Frank Sinatra's "Strangers in the Night' is one...that's Glen playing rhythm guitar on that song. The track was recorded on April 11, 1966, one month before the rest of the album. Hal Blaine was the drummer on the record and Glen Campbell played rhythm guitar. With and without the Wrecking Crew, the song list is endless.

Glen's songs are like old friends to me. I've lived a long time now and through it all Glen has been around, his voice reverberating through airports,train stations and waiting rooms or shopping for groceries, and I always find myself quietly humming along and maybe sharing the moment with a stranger, a little smile of recognition from a fellow Glen Campbell fan. Some artists, the BEST of them, give their music an effortless quality. People like Ray Charles, Roger Miller, Hank Williams, Nat King Cole and yes the truly great Glen Campbell.

It’s really a kick to compare the Glen Campbell version of Gentle on My Mind with the version recorded by John Hartford, who wrote the song. Hartford played the banjo, and gave the song a more upbeat, bluegrass feel, while Campbell’s version had a little more of a country love song vibe. Great song, I love both versions.

Good on you, young man for the appreciation that you are giving Glen Campbell. The look on your face is priceless. Too bad more young guitarists don't apply these lessons to the craft. With auto tune and fuzz pedals, many guitarists these days will never understand what great playing actually is. If you haven't done this, consider doing a video on the fabled LA group of musicians called THE WRECKING CREW. . .which Glen was a part of. They did a lot of background music for groups who could never have played them theirselves. . aka The Monkees. Nice work. Betting you're a pretty good axeman yourself.

I remember when I found out about the WRECKING CREW, I didn't know such a group existed. They didn't seem to get any of their own glory, yet they were the cream of the crop of musicians alive at the time. It took a very special talent to just walk in and play wherever, whenever, and whatever with such memorable results and that their music was on so many iconic recordings...and we never knew! I suggest everybody learn about them...it's an awesome story. Glen Campbell's skills exemplified the caliber of the Wrecking Crew.

Many years ago now I took formal guitar lessons from a young musician that at the time was playing guitar for groups in Hollywood. It was when the Springfield, Linda Ronstadt, the Bryds were playing the popular clubs there. I wanted to learn to play like Clapton and Page and I asked him one day who he thought was his favorite guitarist was. No hesitation he said Glen Campbell. I said what? Glen had a show at the time and he told me to watch it. He said watch how Glen moves in and out of his lead breaks and his fills. He's an amazing guitarist you will be mind blown. I was. And, when he had Jerry Reed or Roy Clark on and they would jam I would sit with my mouth open. Then I found out that Glen was on more records with the Wrecking Crew than you could count. This video is a favorite of mine not only because Glen was such a natural but, the love for him that I saw these greats had for him. He is sorely missed.

I like this guy, his critique is right on target. He also mentions the Spanish guitar, his point is well made and well taken... I served two years with the US Coast Guard, stationed on Spain's Costa Brava. The entertainment, with flamingo dancing and the Spanish guitar was superb and uniquely beautiful...
