They were pitched as "the next Beatles", but I never saw it. 03:50 - A band that was also badly taken advantage of was Badfinger - now that was a real sad story.

@@gerrym.9354 The Rollers' hit songs did not have the complexity of the Beatles early hits IMHO. The excitement was there though. Their album "Elevator" would probably be their "Rubber Soul" except that it is a bit hit and miss. Having said that, I can still listen to their good tracks like Eagles Fly to this day, and at very high volume lol.

I don't know how much you see this as tutorial when you show how to play the songs. But it will be nice if you could write the cords in the description, maybe some diagrams of the extended cord shapes you are using.

Actually, I vaguely remember this band. The next "Beatles" HA! I hardly remember them and it's not a deep memory! They were more like 'bubble gum rock". This bands name is poor and music had nothing for me at that time.. If you had not illuminated aspects about who they are and how they performed I would not have heard it. But with that name, that sound, well I would have never looked. So now that I have I realize I did not miss anything. Go back to the roller ball arena- great team name!

Beautiful, intelligent tribute to a band that gave so much and got very little. I was a huge BCR fan as a girl. Les was my fave and it is shocking he has died at 65 - when I was a fan he seemed so much older to me - it is just a 5 year gap. We were all very young. Great song, thank you for taking the time again to highlight the positive and remind many of the negative - they were exploited and I am sure that issue contributed to a shorter life for Leslie Richard McKeown.

That's it!!! Eric is classically trained in stringed instruments. I have a live concert where he played a classical song and he's very good. I stopped everything I was doing and stood there being wholly impressed and this was taped during the BCR years. I think I mentioned that I met Les twice and Alan once and Woody once. ALL DIFFERENT PERSONALITIES. Les was quite the entertainer and was meant to be on stage as a front man. Extremely charismatic and so much fun. Alan was so shy and Woody was very shy, but liked to joke. Les was so out going and very approachable and loved people. He loved a challenge and loved to talk about music and what was going on with technology. He had a lovely voice too. If you listen to Nobby Clark, the singer previous to Les, he was good, but he just didn't fit. Les fit like a piece of the puzzle. It was magic. Thank you for going over the chords with us that Eric played and the song and Les singing and the Longmuirs and tribute to Les (and Alan silently). Very nice.

I clicked this video so fast. I've always mentioned Crewe/Gaudio in the same breath as Lennon/McCartney and Brian Wilson. I've been in the music industry all my life but all my sensibilities were shaped by The Beatles (of course), Beach Boys, and Four Seasons. I still have the 45 rpm record of Bye Bye Baby. I sure wish more people appreciated their songcraft. Thank you for the great analysis.

I was lucky enough to share a stage with a very young BCR in Edinburgh, not once but twice. On both occasions the other band was the East West Blues Band, with the stunning Ian Bairnson on guitar. It was in a club called Oasis on The Bridges in Edinburgh. Ian went on to be house guitar for the Alan Parsons Project and joined up with Davy Paton to form the excellent Pilot. He also played the Wuthering Heights solo and sessioned for everybody!! The BCR weren’t great players then, but their vocal harmonies were exceptional. Lord Fil of Henley, well done: I can guarantee from personal experience that they could genuinely play - and sing!😊

Loved their music, still play it when I want to put on some happy music. They were better than people give them credit for. I was lucky that I got to see them three times; once when they came to Chicago, then twice at our state fair. I was pleasantly surprised by how tight the shows were. Forty plus years have passed and I vividly remember their set for the "It's a Game" tour. Backlit was a black & white chess board that extended onto the stage, with life size chess pieces. It was visually striking. Simplistic compared to today's concerts, but memorable. I wish people would give their music a chance, they have a solid catalog filled with fun songs.

Nice video - I was 14 when BCR had this hit - I wasn't a "teeny bopper" in my musical tastes but I do remember this group's huge impact - Phil Coulter wrote or co-wrote another of their hits "Shang -a-Lang" which I think made more of an impact on me - rest in peace Les - your place, and that of your fellow band members in music history, is secure - money - or the lack of monetary reward (as sadly happened here) - cannot erase the very happy memories millions have of BCR.

Just had a look at the Mike Mansfield production of BCR at Eden Studios 1976. A rather improbable cover of the Beach Boys Dont Worry Baby complete with two pairs of steel drums, pulled off with great harmonies and enough variation to be original without compromising the song in anyway, not many other groups could do the Beach Boys well (maybe the 4 seasons which would be interesting ) plus some other less hits with the guys on different instruments, with a mix of rock , bubblegum and the rock ballard all in half hour program

Very nice analysis Fil. I liked the Bay City Rollers and its a shame to hear how they were cheated by their own record label. RIP Les.

At the time of this band's popularity I was into what we thought of as a real band - Free. However one memory is of their tv show which every week featured Big Jim O'Sullivan demonstrating guitar techniques. On one episode he had just finished demonstrating some difficult finger style blues and the lead guitar player from the Rollers ended the talk with a fast , descending and cliche blues lick of about 5 notes - the crowd of adoring fans went into ecstatic applause at his virtuosity and Jim O'Sullivan graciously said, ''Oh that really sings.'' :)

I never followed them much but you did a great tribute. Thanks for the respect you show every artist. There was one musician that wasn't respected too much, Freddy Fender. His hit was Wasted Days and Wasted Nights. He asked Fender guitars for a guitar once and asked them if they wanted to sponsor or promote him. They refused. He was the Rodney Dangerfield of Tex-Mex Country Music.

refreshing you have such respect for the song and les , this was my teenage years and can remember how big the BCRs were , with influences over everything from bubblegum to fashion , and yes i had a brown pair of those trousers ... of the hits , bye bye baby and only want to be with you [ far better version than the tourists] were the covers the rest written by phil coulter and bill martin . as you say , the short , but packed four year lifespan was down to well crafted songs one after another . thier ballad give a little love was an instant heart beater for every teenage girl and bit suprised it hasnt been covered by some modern `boy band` . sadly , tam paton , who fleeced these lads dry knew when the time was up and moved on with a new boy band featuring midge ure . that song forever and ever by `slik` was actually penned for the BCR but re arranged for slimeball patons new cash machine. thank you for your kind words about les mckeown RIP

Thank you for all of your videos. They inspired me to pick up a Fender Jazz bass... it's been very enjoyable and I've taken your advice to remember to learn to sing while playing. It is intimidating but fun when it works out. If I can master all of the arpeggios and scales on bass I'll try my hand at guitar in a bit.

My son and I were watching this today after listening to the version by the Symbols that inspired the Rollers. We think the Rollers version is the best of all the versions - just so incredible. But I wanted to add that I did pick up guitar and started writing songs and producing them at home as well, thanks to all of your inspiration! All the best.
