I’m an 80’s girl, so I’ve always loved Cyndi Lauper, but the analysis of this song really gave me an appreciation for her talent. Her breath control is wonderful. She stabs those notes hard when she chooses, and then holds them effortlessly when she needs to. Amazing control.

What’s interesting is. Roy was the first to record it, but tragically died before its release. So the writers, who already worked with Cyndi, offered the song to her. So strangely, it’s a cover but Cyndi’s version was the one we heard first

This is my favorite version of this song. As a 20 something in the 80's I don't think people at the time appreciated how talented she was because she exhibited some odd behavior at the time. But her voice and talent are sooo good she was able to rise above it.

I think a lot of people associated her with a style of music we didn't care for. I really didn't like some of her style of music, but being for the oldies era where voices like hers prevailed, I found myself glued to listening to her singing just for her voice. July 5, 2024 not even 15 minutes ago I saw this channels reaction to Roy Orbison‘s cover of this song and I’m gob smacked. I’ve heard a handful of his other songs and Pretty Woman was an indelible part of my growing up. I have always loved his voice and his range but until I saw you isolate the vocal track and analyze it I had no idea. I love your reactions and will definitely be subscribing. Mr. Orbison‘s version of this brilliant Kelly/Steinberg song is as driving in its own way as Cyndi Lauper’s and the arrangement gives a few subtle nods to Orbison’s version. Cyndi had so much style, personality, charisma and- dare I say it- true colours in her voice- that it is virtually impossible not to be moved. She knew how to dress, how to write, how to sing, and she flirted with so many genres, beit jazz, pop, country and blues. A true pioneer. I will always remember seeing her perform on TV for the first time, wearing two different coloured converse shoes to match her two-toned coloured hair, and this was in the 80s, paving the way for the likes of Madonna and inspiring Nina Hagen

I was 21 when "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" was released. I have never really focused on the instrumental parts of any song she has sang. Her voice is so unique, you don't need to. From the first word she sings, you know exactly who you are hearing. She truly is one of a kind. And this song is my favorite from her.

Its incredible that this song was so well written and produced that it ended up having 3 very distinct versions, all from very different artists, and all 3 had hits with it- Roy himself, Cyndi, and then Celine Dion later. Cyndi and Celines being so different from the original and yet those two also being so different from one another with different ranges and different productions shows that very well written songs stand the test of time and will fit with anyone with the talent to make them their own

When I was 17 years old I had Cyndi Lauper's "She's so unusual." A friend came round to jam one day, and when he saw i had that album he confessed to having it too. Until then it had been his dirty little secret. Like pink seat covers in your 4WD. Ha! Great album. It had several covers on it. This sounds like typical Cyndi Lauper dynamics. You can Hear Roy Orbison's musicality, and Cyndi's dynamics here. I can hear this grand ascent that is so typical of Roy, but she does her own thing too. I've never heard Roy do this song, so I'm not making a comparison. But yes, thanks Fil. I'll have to listen to Roy do it now.

I've loved Cyndi since Blue Angel. Drove my old Landlady Crazy in the '80's with that album! I adore that '80's Trashcan Drum sound, I just do. There's a great song to analyze! "Maybe He'll Know" and "I'm Gonna Be Strong" from the same album. Omg her voice on those tracks. Just Sublime. That was definitely One Breath at the end. Her Voice gives me Chills. Thanks for this awesome analysis of Cyndi Lauper. I was an adolescent/ teenager(giving away my age)when she appeared on the scene and found her amazingly talented. Yet people were quick to dismiss her because of how she dyed her hair and her wardrobe--these were considered "eccentric" during the 1980s. Your analysis of this song reminds me of Cyndi's plethora of vocal abilities including breath control and maintaining pitch. Bravo, Fil for all you do!

I have just found myself in tears - I love this song and adore Cyndi's version. It has expression of both true love and sexual yearning and the instumentation works with that. I am also proud to have the 12" single of this as well. I like Roy Orbison at times, but I didn't think he did the song justice, given it is actually such a passionate song. IMO.

Hey Phil Long time listener, first time caller) Thank you for your videos, I am a radio presenter, and music enthusiast, so your content just hits me spot on, and even though I can't sing, watching somebody talented analysing the singing techniques is very addictive) Hope you don't mind that I used your interpretation of EWF September chorus' lyrics for my radio show (I still have the recording, can send it to you) My request is coming all the way back from 1987, when Eurythmics were on their world tour, and late released their Sydney concert as a VHS. There are 3 songs in this concert which MUST be analysed, because so much is going on there all at the same time. It's "Here comes the rain again"(with a brilliant final guitar solo from Dave) It's "It's alright"(with bass solo, sax solo, and guitar solo) And it's "There must be an angel"(Where Jimmy Z just blows the whole world with his harmonica solo) Thank you, and all the best.

Oh my goodness, I adore her version of this song! It's on one of my daily playlists. Roy was amazing: his solo work and with the Traveling Wilburys are treasures for me, so his version has a special place. But there's something about Cyndi's version that seems more desperate and urgent, totally fitting for driving all night to get to someone. you might find Del Shannon's (perhaps known best for the song "Runaway", though he has others) final album of particular interest, a similar effort but not near topping that put forth by that veritable supergroup, The Traveling Wilburys! Maybe you would consider doing an analysis of this tune in Celine Dion’s version? I love her voice too, and sadly, she isn’t doing well these days. Her health is not good. I don’t think she’s going to be able to sing anymore. But, man oh man! That lady could SING. You can tell how much these phenomenal artists LOVED their music, singing, and the stage!
