Traveling Robert

Күн бұрын

Walk through and review of our travel trailer after one year of ownership, 15 road trips in which we traveled over 5000 miles.
Pros:
Light and easy to tow
Large basement and inside storage
Large fresh water and holding tanks
LED lights and plenty AC power plugs
Good looking cabinetry and inside space
Cons:
Flawed water heater
Wobbly and non-ergonomic dinette
Small, somewhat uncomfortable bathroom
No Inverter
Low fidelity stereo system
Sewer connection too low
Inaccurate holding tank sensors
Overall biased verdict:
We like it, except for the water heater.

Great video, Robert. With regard to the kitchen table/counter, I have had good experiences with a fold-down counter retrofit that is connected to the side wall with a continuous hinge. You flip the counter up and use a leg to support it. No wobbling and it folds down and out of the way when you don't need it. Happy travels, mis amigos.

Hello there Robert! I appreciate your truthful review. We are new, just finished our first year ourselves. When we were thinking about camping, at first we spent a years worth of occasional weekends and a couple vacations of three weeks each in a truck bed tent! Just to be sure we would be ok with the campgrounds. After we knew we would be fine and comfortable staying so close to others, we decided to get a travel trailer. After a couple months of research and actually traveling quite a few miles looking at all the different models like everything from Airsteam to pop up campers, new and used. We ended up deciding on a Forest River Wolf Pup 16FQ that means 16' living space and front queen bed! At a local dealer my family has dealt with for decades. We were insistent on two things after the research, that would be a dry bath and walk around queen bed!! Both of which were non negotiable, oh yea one other thing,no slides! So that is just what we got with the Wolf Pup! We have been very happy and have had nothing go wrong at all, except a new battery that came with, but would not hold a charge very long for some reason. That did cause me quite a scare by myself while dry camping at the beach. It was a beautiful full moon in July on the coast of R. I. It seems if your battery get under a certain amp. the co/smoke detector will go off! Mine happened to do so at three in the morning! While right fairly close to folks on both sides! I was awoken to dead battery and no lights, but at least a full moon, those alarms are loud! I'm amazed that no one woke up! So here I am with an alarm going off trying to figure out why, with no heat on and all the windows and door open with the screen door closed, that this alarm would go off! So the first think I thought was a propane leak! Not knowing the detectors do not check that, but I went and shut the propane off! As with no lights on I figured the alarm would shut the power off as to not have a spark?! So then I grabbed my powerful iPhone LED flashlight and got down on hands and knees to see how I could shut the alarm off! That all it was is a simple button, but hard to see! Anyway, I got the alarm off and was able to fall asleep. I got up the next day, took the battery out and brought it to a local yard tractor and power equipment dealer near by, to charge the battery and check it out. But then found a Marina that I bought a new Interstate 12volt deep cycle Marine/RV Battery exactly like the o e the trailer came with. When I get back my friendly local RV dealer adjusted the new battery by just giving me a new one, so now I have a two battery bank in a small trailer. I consider myself very lucky to have that one issue for the first year!! I hear ya about that water heater! I had a very good one installed in my home, that has saved me a lot of propane! But what I do not like about it is that you need to run the water a good while before it gets hot! there is plenty of hot water after that, but I feel it's a waste of water waiting for the hot water. I also looked at the trailer you have and did not buy it for that one reason! Because I like to dry camp, and thought with only so much water, plus the way I have to let it run at home!? No thanks. Hey anyway have fun and stay safe!

Hi Robert, Your videos have been very informative and helped with our decision to purchase the 1706. We had gone to La Mesa in Sanford to just look into the possibility of purchasing an RV, and like you, we also fell for the Micro Minnie. I was concerned about the water heater, but since we also live in Florida, decided we could work around it. We did have an issue on our first long trip, so had to use the park's showers over the weekend until we could have it looked at, a mud wasp clogging the air intake to the water heater:P I also spoke with Ron at Winnebago about the inconsistency of the water temperature. He said to turn both the hot and cold on full blast, then turn back the cold until you reach the correct temp. Also, unless you are dry camping, and trying to conserve your water, it's better to let it continue running while you shower. Shutting it off and on, is what causes the flucuation in temperature. We also got a ETL 26781 White Body Spa Oxygenics Shower with 60" Hose, from Amazon. So tried this technique out with the new nozzle and had a nice consistent warm shower, with nice pressure. We also had the same issue with the black water tank, so did some research, and found it to be a common problem with many RV tanks. Apparently "crap" and tissue can get on the sensors. So while at a park with a sewer hook up, we just let the water run for a while to clean all of the crap out of it, then closed it the value, filled it up with clean water, added a little bleach and let it set a few minutes. Then my husband pulled the value and we flushed it again. It now reads empty. If it's really caked on to the sensor, there are products you can get that are suppose to dissolve it. So we will try and plan the last day of a trip at a park with full hook up, just so we can clean out our tanks in this manor and hopefully avoid the issue in the future. We look forward to many trips in our Mini Winnie, thanks for helping with our decision to get one. Lisa

I have had a 2015 micro Minnie since May of this year. I haven't noticed any issues with our water heater. Weird? I would also add that the memory foam mattress was one of the main reasons we bought this trailer. Our only issues have been the lack of a valve handle on our propane quick exchange, and I broke one of our stabilizing jacks. I completely agree that the waste water drain is way too low. Thanks for all of the reviews.
@TravelingRobert
@TravelingRobert 8 жыл бұрын
Hey maybe they made some improvements in the 2015 model. After much trial and error I figured the main issue with mine seems to be the water pressure. I have been able to make the heater work properly but only in campgrounds with exceptionally good water pressure. The onboard water pump in my 2014 seems to be inadequate. When there is weak water pressure the on demand heater just shuts down. Hey enjoy your Micro Minnie and see you on the road!

Robert, I really enjoy all of your videos. It appears you put a lot of work into editing, and it makes your videos very entertaining. This one is great for us because we are planning to buy in 2017, if, as they say in Indiana, "the creek don't rise"! Oh, by the way, have you thought about buying one of those folding plastic things for your sewer hose? I can't think of the name of it but it folds up into a neat package when it's not in use, kind of like an accordion, and when you use it, it spreads out in a caterpillar-like shape that fits under the hose and gives it a gradually declining support base running from the RV to the sewer hookup. It will keep the hose off the ground and remove the sharp drop at the RV end and the sharp rise at the RV park's sewer end. Great invention that may solve your problem. Again, please keep making your awesome videos. Your honesty is also greatly appreciated.

During my PDI for my Minnie travel trailer, Gray Tank 1, 25 gal, was reading 2/3 when full. The Dealership I purchased from disclosed this right away, and said it would be corrected after I returned from my first trip. I don't think you should settle for poor tank readings, or the broken hot water heater. Especially since this is the first "USEFUL" Winnebago travel trailer video I have found on youtube. Winnebago's name means something, and the main reason why I bought a 2401RG, and not a Keystone product. Thank you for making this video.

I'm currently shopping for a light weight trailer, but I need head room, leg room, and shoulder room because I'm big & tall, and some what disabled. To be honest Robert I enjoyed your review very much, but it steered me away from this model, and perhaps Winnebago and Attwood completely. The park is alright. Apparently there was a fire earlier this year and they have the lake all fenced up and everything is closed. The pool at the campground only opens on weekends. Thanks for everything you posted even if you do not answer my questions! It is good to see reality from real usage, rather than the sales hype! Thank you! Lots of questions but all simple, if you don't mind. 1. How much did it cost? 2. What is the length of it corner to corner without including the hitch? 3. What is the width of it corner to corner? 4. What is your total road ready weight? 5. also empty weight as delivered (to be sure not to look up wrong weight on specs) I saw 3,180 on another video! 6. What size vehicle will tow this safely? 7. and what do you use now to tow it 8. and how does it do on the road? 9. and tow package you might be using?
@TravelingRobert
@TravelingRobert 8 жыл бұрын
+DormantIdeas NIQ the price was $16,000. It is 19ft long by a little over 7ft wide. It is about 3000lbs dry. I how with a 2004 Kia Sorento capable of towing 3500 and it does just fine. I wouldn't cross the Rockies with it. I got the Eaz Lift hitch with weight distribution and sway control and a brake controller.

I am looking a Rialta being a solution as well, but that means the living space is smaller and the home space cannot be separated from the puller. ... and though I don't like to tow, I was looking at a unit like yours to convert the hitch to a 5th wheel to make the towing a much easier experience. ...all good, thank you... Very interesting to see a review of a US compact "caravan" as we call them here across the pond. We've had two caravans in the past, and this looks better equipped as compared to budget UK models - although we have less need for aircon for example. Thanks for the tour, seems like a great little unit overall, but like you I don't get the shower feeding off the sink taps. Is there any room to retro fit a small heated hot water tank? I had one hidden under one of the seats in my unit, and it provided just enough hot water for a 5-7 min shower, and was hot again 10 mins later.

Thanks for the great videos, Robert. I'm thinking of downsizing, and going mobile and your input has been great, of course I have a few more of your videos to watch. :) I have one question. Have you had an opportunity to do a side by side comparison with an 1801? I'm going to do some research soon. I hope to go mobile in the spring. Thanks, again, and safe travels.
@TravelingRobert
@TravelingRobert 8 жыл бұрын
+Don Schenk Thank you! The 1801 as far as I can tell is very similar. The only difference I've seen is that it is a little wider, taller and heavier, and it has a two door refrigerator. I'm going to the RV show in Tampa this weekend so I'll be able to compare the new 1706FB with the rest of the lineup. I'll be uploading a video in late January or early February.

I think all the water heaters are a pain. Ours worked long enough to last through out walk thru at CW and then when we wanted to use it in the winter it would not turn on. luckily we live in Pensacola and not Fargo, ND. Like you we are on our first TT and its our "training wheels". Just had our 1st anniversary too! Labor Day weekend. Eco Skamper is what we have and its very similar to what you have.

So when they fixed your hot water heater was it fixed? Do you get more than 10 seconds of hot water now? Did you find that Winnebago backed up and followed through with fixes? Thank you kindly for your review.

I figured the only workaround is to find a campground with exceptionally good water pressure. Then it works as it is supposed to.

Is it possible to turn down the temperature setting of your hot water heater? That way you wouldn't need to add so much cold water to the flow. It would keep your tankless heater flow more constant. (It might seem counter-intuitive but it might help solve your problem.) By the way, thanks for the unbiased review, very entertaining.
@TravelingRobert
@TravelingRobert 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you. It is already at the minimum, lowest setting. In this heater is not a temperature control like you see in other units. I think it is called modulating valve with a minimum setting for summer and maximum setting for winter. Pretty crude stuff.

Robert, nice video. My wife and I are considering one of these Micro Minnie RVs and I wonder if the 2016 or 2017 models have corrected the water heater issues? Do you have any information on that?

It is a real shame these companies are so short sighted they treat us like garbage. Now you are the ambassador so they treat you better but it is a complete disgrace that any brand allows their affiliates to marginalize our complaints. Shame on you Winnebago. I am taking my Jayco for warranty on Tuesday the 13th for 2 warranty items - 1) fridge never worked on propane 2) slide leaked from the beginning on the inside on the walls not through the seals at the edges. My warranty expires soon and I never used my RV. I am about to. If they fix it fine, if not I will slam them eventually when it counts, when I have enough viewers. I can fix these things myself anyway so I will not worry about it. Great video again - what else is new - you are a natural.

I don't think so, not without certain modifications. It is not very well insulated and you would need holding tank heaters. The good news is that all the plumbing is inside.

The 17FB is better than a popup :), to give yourself a couch to sit on either turn the seats of the dinette sideways and place them side by side or put the dinette in bed mode and use it as a daybed format and both ways you can watch TV from on top of the sink as you sit on the couch.
@TravelingRobert

+Max1Chase1 That's a good idea. I can't wait to get rid of that dinette and come up with something better.

I think we have almost same size rv. European are normally smaller than American and little different. For example we don't have sewer or city water connections. Also "tow systems" are different.

@@TravelingRobert Hello Robert, the European trailers have the axle(s) close to the center or gravity. So the tongue weight ranges from 50 to 75 kg (~140 pounds). These trailers you can tow with many medium type of cars ...no need for trucks like in US due to the much higher tongue weight. Also they have brakes acting only with the push of the trailer weight during braking (no electric magnet) and they are lighter in weight for a comparable length.

Aren't you overloading the tow vehicle? The dry weight of the trailer is 3,000 pounds, so adding water and gear likely puts the total weight over the 3,500 pound max for the tow vehicle.
@TravelingRobert
@TravelingRobert 7 жыл бұрын
+John Anderson It struggles sometimes. I try to travel with empty tanks whenever possible, and until I can afford a better tow vehicle old Kia it is. Won't be crossing the Rockies with it any time soon.
