There was a moment where I was legitimately concerned that the 2023 Dubai Airshow would be a little bit boring. After all, we've seen so many massive aircraft orders so far this year, that it seemed that no one was saving up for the show. But boy was I wrong. This year's Dubai Airshow was one of the biggest in its history, with some absolutely massive orders and announcements.
In what's becoming a bit of a tradition, I'm here at the show to give you all a first hand account of who walked out of the show a winner and who walked out a loser. So, who are the winners & losers of the 2023 Dubai Airshow? Let me explain...

Boeing was testing the 777X-9 here in Montana (surprisingly) they did 3 take off and landings from our over 10k ft runway and good god is it a big bird. Watching those pilots navigate the taxiways that normally handle crj700 and 737/a320 (as well as 757/767, MD11* and a300 freighters) was neat. I’m glad I happened to be at the airport doing my occasional flight watching. We rarely get to see anything big like that and the -9 is huge

Former Boeing... I live about 175 miles from Everett now. Our Regional Airport has a 9,500 foot runway. We get a lot of Boeing aircraft doing touch and goes here. I live on a hillside and have a great view as they come in. After standing in front of those massive GE 9x Turbofans at Everett Plant, they look a bit smaller from a distance. Planes are quiet, but are sports cars. They can gain altitude so fast that it looks fake. At full thrust, those engines are pure magic.

@@SJR_Media_Group I would love to be able to see stuff like that regularly. The observation area here is maybe 100ft from the taxiway and that engine is absolutely massive. It’s amazing something like that can fly, I mean I get the physicist but holy shit. Boeing has a facility (old Air Force base) where they do testing in north eastern Montana but this was from Moses Lake to KBIL. The 3rd time it took off, I hoped so badly it would come back one more time. I wish Boeing would release testing schedules (even tentative) as I’d drop everything to see them fly new variants into here.

You forgot to mention the Gulf Carriers as winners because you sure said they were losers of the Paris Air Show. I don't see how you can call the 777-8 vastly inferior to the A350-1000 when the only advantage seems to be a lighter airframe in theory. If the 777-8 is predicted to carry more passengers and at least 10 tons more revenue cargo than the a350-1000...how is it vastly inferior especially now that Emirates is saying that the maintenance costs are up to 4x higher than the 777-300er? Yes,...engines are part of the maintenance cost.

The Emirates 777X order should be a confidence boost for the 777X program. I m still waiting for the Turkish Airlines deal though.
@hardly.rivai_YT
@hardly.rivai_YT 6 ай бұрын
In summary, Boeing is the clear winner of the Dubai Air Show. Despite getting its floor swept with the 500+ Indigo order at the Paris Air Show and the AF/KLM defection, commitments from Emirates and Ethiopian on their 777X and 737 MAX programs provide a huge boost to its beleaguered commercial aircraft division. Plus, they're also picking up some business in the freight sector with the Oman Air BCF deal. Not too bad at all. However, I do agree that the unprecedented backlog of new planes the leading airlines - both FSC and LCC - have ordered has left smaller carriers left out to dry. Additionally, these planes are very expensive to purchase, which means that demand for leased aircraft will also continue to grow. I wouldn't be surprised that we may see orders that push the delivery dates to the 2040s. By then, a new revolutionary aircraft will be in production to carve a slice of the growing airline market (a la Boom Overture).

It's a bubble in aircraft ordering right now. We've seen this before and correct quite a few will never get delivered but both Airbus and Boeing well know this and have factored that in. Nothing new here in that regard. It's always been a highly cyclical business.

Although I personally prefer Airbus widebodies/narrowbodies, no doubt what helps Boeing A LOT is that the US economy is doing much better than the EU economy (to be fair, the US economy is doing better than pretty much any developed nation) Inflation being much lower in the US definitely helps Boeing with the negotiations. Note that some Airbus are US made, though.

A cyclically sick local economy should HELP a large corporation having to compete so hard for capital and skilled labour on the supply (ie design and manufacture) side while not hurting said corporation if its demand is spread among healthier economies worldwide (as Boeing and Airbus' both are). Apart from which yuo are certainly exaggerating the diffrence in the current health of the US and EU economies. Perhaps you have in mind the UK as being part of the EU - the UK is sick from its self-inflicted embargo on their major trading partner.

Great video Coby! I love these winner and loser analyses and I say keep ‘em coming! The B777X family securing more orders is a very important step in the right direction for the program I think especially after laggy sales and high customer turnover due to delays. The 777X is my FAVORITE NEW JET I just wish a U.S. company would pick up the 777X! 😂🎉 Also the Airbus A350 program seems like it’s also doing well and I wish that the A350-1000 would also get a U.S. carrier to sign up for it but that’d mean no 777X would be delivered to that U.S. airline then. Overall great video I have to go to the Airshow next year and cheers 🥂 Here’s to the 777X! 😊I’ll def buy a 777X poster and Singapore 🇸🇬 24 would be SWEET if I had the money 💰 😩

@@dynasty0019 So far the 777X is a plane primarily for single hub carriers. United has hubs in New York, Chicago, Denver, San Francisco, Houston, DC. American has hubs in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dallas, Miami, DC. Delta has hubs in New York, Atlanta, Boston, Detroit, Minneapolis, Seattle That's why United and American are focused on the 787 going forward. And Delta has been using A330s and the A350-900. I would expect orders for the 777X to only come for slot constrained airports like JFK and LAX, only after existing 777ERs have put on 22+ years.

Historicly the 777 like the 747 before is barely used in the US for domestic routes. the 777F's from Fed Ex might be the exeption. f.e. Delta (skyteam) uses it for its European routes from JFK United for its Asian routes from the west coast. The 777 like the 747 before is the workhorse for flying over the Atlantic and Pacific. On this side of the pond a 777 is seen and used as much as bread and butter. US, European, Asian, African and middle east carriers use f.e. Schiphol alot.

The diversification of aircraft for Emirates at least tells us one thing. The A380 is going away at some undetermined point in time. So they are looking for similar alternatives. Capacity may decrease just a bit, but the revenue will be made up in fuel savings. Embraer may have answered the question of why Emirates would do this. With a 70% load factor in the Middle Eastern region, Emirates has to think long term and 300 plus capacity aircraft just doesn't fit the bill.

Hi Coby, as an Airbus Engineer, let me clarify that even though A359 and A35K are 2 different variations, from operational point of view there is no difference.. The crew will not need any additional training.. If I can stretch it, even the A380 crew can pilot the A35x and vice a versa with little to few changes in operational requirements. This is the beauty and goal of Airbus Common Cockpit which is visible also on SA-LR fleets. I guess the same can be stated for Boeing 787-8/-9 and 777s. So I believe the EKs fleet strategy is not exactly a loser.
@johniii8147

Such things as a fleet commonality for pilot training for large international airlines are often overstated in importance for such carriers that are very used to and capable over operating a diverse fleets. Almost all of them have a mix of Airbus and Boeing aircraft and have the scale and expertise to support both. LH, BA, KLM, SQ, CX. EK, QR, EY, AF/KL, QF, etc all come to mind. The training cost is easy to offset in the deal for large orders.

I don't understand why it's so hard for Boom to find a suitable jet engine. There's any of a number of military jet engines that could provide enough power and fuel efficiency for their civilian supersonic jet. The GE XA100 Adaptive Cycle Engine which just got axed for the F-35 upgrade, would be an ideal candidate.

Emirates is one of the most, if not the most, calculated, agile and successful airlines in the world. I disagree with your point on them ordering aircrafts first then figuring out what to do with them. They dont just leave it for the luck. Knowing Emirates, I think they are playing a new, startegic or innovative hand that no one is familiar with. Especially, there are wanna be players in the neighborhood copying whatever Emirates does and go after their partners and operaters. So I think it is a new disguised startegy from Emirates to create their business model 2.0.

Successful yes; calculated, probably not. Their biggest weakness was the lack of anything smaller than the 777, so it's harder for them to penetrate markets that don't need as much space. This is why Etihad and Qatar have a leg up on them in spite of having far less A380s. And the pandemic put that weakness on full display when Emirates was forced to ground effectively it's entire A380 fleet.

Hi Coby, your channel is fantastic, I have watched you from early days. I really believe that the E2 is a seriously good plane and equals if not exceeds the A220. They need to up their marketing strategy of this really outstanding aircraft. Regards from South Africa

As for supersonic success, while the additional investment may see it reach the market, I wonder just how many units will be required to recover the development costs? As for its engines, if they are starting from scratch and doing it all 'in-house', just what percentage of the current budget will be swallowed up, and how long will the design, development, and testing be? I even wonder if further significant investment will still be required? Will we see them going 'bust' closer to launch? Could a new company then buy the assets to take the aircraft to market unburdened with the development costs?

It's mostly smoke and mirrors with BOOM. This will take many billions to successfully develop both the frame and engines. $750 million is but a drop in the bucket of what it would take for a tiny market for the plane and the time frame that would be required. They are a fundraising company, not one that will actually ever produce a plane.

Without A380, Emirates is just another premium airline. Neither B777X, A350, and definitely not B787 will give it the plate form to garner the luxury airline it wants to accomplish.
@oadka

The defining factor about the A380, apart from the value it has to avgeeks, is its passenger comfort. Both the A350 and 777x are able to outmatch it due to their larger windows, better pressurization while giving the same 18" seat width. It remains to be seen however what seat pitch Emirates will field, which will set the legroom. Let's see if they are able to fit their luxurious first class suites as well.

They could still offer a very luxurious experience, and those two planes have bigger windows, and higher cabin pressurization which is nice. They just won’t be able to fly as many passengers but a 777X-10 would get close-r. Plus they have a while before the 380 has to be retired imo. With no replacement, I think they will be more willing to hold on to them and refurbish interiors and do major overhauls

Honestly I think Ethiopian’s order of 737 MAX has something to do with Ethiopia-US relation. The 737 MAX is absolutely better now, but whenever I step on that aircraft, I still worry a little. You know, it has just been 4 years after all
@johniii8147

I'm never really concerned about a specific aircraft type. I get concerned about any 3rd world carrier. Their safety, training and maintenance standards are just not the same. Cleary Boeing really screwed up the MAX, but we never saw these issues other than that type of carrier. It was factor in all of it and the crashes exposed that and Boeing's mistakes. LOT of blame to go around there.

With these massive orders, what is brewing is a crisis, like a bubble, why are airlines getting so far ahead of themselves in such massive purchases? Will Airbus and Boeing be able to supply all those orders and at what cost? Will there be cancellations and legal litigation in the future? Only time will tell

Great Coby and great content as always interesting that somehow it feels like Emirates does not realy crave for thise 787... A point from a brazilian and ex staff of the airline, I woul not at all consider Azul as a lowcost. They name themselves so though having the highest fare and being I would say the only brazilian airline serving snacks selection and drinks on domestic flights not charging for nothing and the only airline in Brazil with personal ife on the whole fleet (only not in ATRs)
