Winning Start in the Busy Fleet [Reframed]

The first two minutes of a race is arguably the most important. Those first two minutes will define where you start on the line, and how much space is around you to accelerate. This makes starting one of the hardest skills to master in sailboat racing.
It was an excellent start of the yacht race.

Hard to tell if it's a fractional or masthead rig in this vid but if it's masthead that's gotta be at least a 150 jenny if not a 180.

I was never aggressive enough at the start; I'd usually hang at the far end of the line and just wait until the rest of the fleet tacked port. I'd then minimize the # of tacks to get to the weather mark. Many times I could outpoint the other boats and gain a little ground that way, and it kept me out of traffic. To say I sailed conservative was an understatement, but I always had anxiety issues generally and it was the only way I could participate coolly without being a menace to the rest of the fleet. Close-hauled was my worst point of sail as a helmsman. I preferred to chase my sail trim instead of trimming to my heading; but I always felt like if I could just outpoint the rest of the fleet I could gain lost ground. Sometimes it worked but frequently it didn't. I was just too skittish in traffic. BUT....I'll always have that last race of the season in the late '60s that I could point to as one race where that strategery worked -- like a charm. It was a one-design race and I finished out so far ahead of the fleet I couldn't believe it myself, after only tacking twice to the weather mark and a screaming downwind leg. A memory near and dear to my heart, as it was the only time I could tell my contemporaries "I told you it would work."
