Love to see that you are actual human players and not pros . Ian looks like a pusher from the baseline (sorry Ian) but very good at the net, Kevin looks like a strong baseline player but doesn't like to be rushed so much and makes a lot of mistakes . Looking forward to the next movie . This is what amateur player need, real matches with similar players, not some god like professional players who have perfection in every stroke and can do whatever they want with the ball on the field . Keep up the good work !

Pushers get a bad rap in tennis, hence the apology. But I think there's something almost every one of us can take from a pushers game. Consistency, why do people hate playing these guys? Because the average point lasts 3 shots, and when you're a set and a half in going "this guy just doesn't miss". Does Ian hit with tons of pace, no. But the consistency and the variety of the shots he produces far out weigh trying to hit a heavy ball that you miss every 1 out of 5 shot selection, is so key in this game, you will find yourself winning lot matches by changing the way you see shot selection. It's that high slice, while you're chasing a wide ball, it's not giving your opponents a certain angle, knowing which ball you've hit well, for the ghost approach. We can all truely play a lot more like the pros than we may think, maybe not be as athletic as them. But we can hit the same type of shots.

@@EssentialTennis I don't see you as a pusher. You're not consistent enough! I think your forehand has some pace, but has bad technique, which makes it less consistent than it should be. You backhand is the more reliable side.

I've always looked at it like this. You look at pretty much any other professional sport. What do organizations want "clean players" which means no history of troublemaking etc. Look at the ATP you can't get to the top, even near the top without one hell of a mental game. I think of a few guys like Kyrigos or Tomic. Guys with tremendous talent...but it's fairly obvious they don't have a rock-solid mindset like Nadal or Federer, Djokovic. These guys no matter what happens on the court, can find a way mentally. Finding Tennis mentally stuff changed my life. It's a HUGE reason I am the way I am today. And I would encourage ANYONE to try it. Just the way you will notice a mis-hit or a will error roll off your shoulder, you'll notice this problems in life disappear as well. This is why I love Tennis! And also why you never see pro tennis players getting into trouble. It's NOT a coincidence.

Awesome guys, love the battle and the look into match play. Ian, by focusing on your tactics, you became process oriented, which I believe is the key to playing freely and diminish the importance of the score allowing you to play your best.

This is a nice content and match analysis. Would be great also to include slow motions of the strategy which you guys say on Mic. You guys have strokes like professional players so can work on tactics like Hitting with topspin/Flat or do Serve and volleys. For 3.0-3.5 players it will be struggle as they cant hit with same strength :(

These videos you guys are doing are ground breaking! Amazing idea and actually just plain entertaining to watch!! I think ATP could learn something from what you are doing to increase the entertainment of professional tennis (i.e. allows coaches on court, have courtside in match interviews regarding strategy, etc.)Great job, and also good insight!!

This video reminds me of Brad Gilbert's great tennis strategy book, 'Winning Ugly.' In it Gilbert emphasises the importance of going into a match with a plan to force your opponent out of his comfort zone. He also says if it isn't working (give it a chance first) players need to modify their game plan during the match. Too often though, club level players don't come into the match with any sort of plan and just keep playing the way they always do to, even if it is clearly not working. The way you both come up with strategies during match, and the impact they have on the games is Gilbert's theory in practice and great to see played out. I hope ET can produce more of this type of content. KZbin has plenty of tennis technique videos but not enough on strategy. Keep winning ugly ET!

Now I have a question, what changes should Kevin start to apply if he wants to overcome the score? I mean if he plays hard and deep balls then Ian would use his force and make him fail. And in the other hand, if he starts to slow their rhythm of rally Ian attacks him directly over the net. I've been in that situation and really gets me out of focus. Great video by the way, love the way you say all the things I think during a match.
@ldeue4837
@ldeue4837 5 жыл бұрын
From what I've noticed the errors seem to be piling up on Kevin's side. Some of that seems like probably "match rust" and the other part Ian's play. If I was Kevin I'd start trying to find my strokes by hitting harder shots to the center of the court with a big target area. Then hopefully advance to a point where you can work Ian side to side.

@@EssentialTennis thanks for the demo. Just a comment to others viewers/readers. Try to stick with a strategy for some games. Don't rush into finding solution right away. To extend this to the top level (pro). It's rarely done. In the end it all comes down to whom Can apply his game/strength. They would tweak the strategy but only to a certain extent. E.g. : Djokovic would not serve and volley every 2 points even If his loosing. He'll rely on what he knows Best. Oh and by the way , i'll be Tomorrow at the basel tennis indoors ( ATP 500) watching some top players! Looking forward to being close to the players on court 2!! It s Always fantastic being so close :))))

Nice video. This is closely related to something I've been struggling with recently -- how do you know that it's time to alter your strategy? As an example, suppose I'm serving and volleying. I know that I shouldn't abandon the strategy just because my opponent passes me once. But I also don't want to stick with the same losing strategy until I'm down a set and a break. How do you recognize that a strategy is not effective? How many points or games do you lose before changing your strategy? How long do try a Plan B before moving on to Plan C?
@EssentialTennis
@EssentialTennis 5 жыл бұрын
EXCELLENT questions!! There's definitely not a set/standard answer. It depends on momentum, how badly the current tactic is working, and the mental state of you and your opponent. It takes a while to build an intuition for it.
@joemarshall4226
@joemarshall4226 2 жыл бұрын
If you are serving and volleying and you are doing it well by your own standards, yet your opponent is still breaking your serve easily, well then it's time to change SOMETHING....maybe analyze which serves work best, maybe stay back for the return and come in on the next groundstroke...mix it up.

0:45 Ian catches an ‘out’ ball with his racquet. And again at 0:57 he does so with his hand. This means he loses the points, according to the rules. This is beside the point about mental game but I think it is important not to play theoretical tennis (“that would have been out if it landed”).

It`s amazing how a little extra consistency can upset your opponent , i see Federer do this all the time on break points , a deep slice or a moon ball mix can really knock the sails out of any good player . plus it sends a message ,, i ain`t missing , you want to win this point ? your gonna have to play out of your comfort zone , and that`s exactly what stringer breaker Kevin did in this set .

Awesome counter adjustment Ian to find a solution that got you back in the second set. This requires observation and understanding to realise what is occurring at the the other end of the court, being in the moment. I noted you weren't going for huge approach shots, nothing risky, just making Kevin play and make him be uncomfortable. Now Kevin has lost the combination to his safe, what does he do?

To be Frank, Ian....Your ground strokes seem to be ok, but unreliable, but your net game is phenomenal. It seems to me, you should always be looking to come in...or at least, threaten to come in...especially on a fast indoor court. The THREAT of your approach will force mistakes off your opponent, not to mention the actual put-aways you will get up there.
