Great episode. I grew up a Celtics fan back in the 80's. Seeing Bird's backstory was absolutely terrific. And I assume that next week we'll see Riley take over.

What struck me was the fact that they forgot about Larry Bird playing a big role in the Boston Celtics coming back from a 3-1 deficit against the Philadelphia 76ers to win the Eastern Conference Finals and then in Game 1 to rub salt in Magic, missed a 20ft shot only to then follow his own shot and make it.

If the Bird really “playing in jeans “ at the first ISU practice” really is true-that’s the most Larry Bird thing ever!

Really glad they are giving Larry Bird a proper back story and building up his character. He was undoubtedly one of the biggest parts to the whole Lakers dynasty he gave them all nightmares and dominated the 80s with Magic.

The writing and acting is so good, I felt something for Bird and he’s struggle to live up to his talent, the Riley and Westhead relationship is intriguing ready for the nail 2 drop. Thanks for the review!!!

Great episode really intrigued! That lil backstory for Larry Bird was so insightful to watch. LOVE THEIR RIVALRY💜💛 we need this type of energy back in the NBA lol

Random real-life trivia: Another thing that contributed to Bird dropping out was he was getting psychologically abused pretty badly by Kent Benson, who was a superstar at IU and a #1 NBA draft pick but would end up being a pretty marginal figure in the pros. When Bird got to the NBA he made special effort to demolish Benson every time they played. Given that Kareem also had issues with the same guy (broke his hand punching him, albeit before the events of Winning Time), it would have been interesting (though unlikely) to have worked him in.

I understand Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's punch on Kent Benson was before his teammate (at the time) Kermit Washington punched Rudy Tomjanovich in the face (nearly killed him)?

The one thing I want to mention is in the flash back with Larry Bird when the Indiana St. Coach was recruiting him, Larry was playing in back of a hotel lot. That's were a lot of the African Americans worked who lived in the area, I've heard him say in a documentary that he would go there to play because that's where the competition was. "The Brothers" that's why he was the way he was, Larry Bird wasn't no soft ass "white boy'! He got tuff n ruthless playing in that lot, if you notice he's the only non African American there. Shout out to Larry the Legend!!

Overlooked was the NBA Draft in 1981. Jerry West wanted Larry Nance out of Clemson. However, Westhead had final say and picked Mike McGee. I can't help but think the Lakers would have killed it every year with Nance and eventually Worthy running on the break.

The brunch scene was great acting by the man who played Norman! He was saying one thing, the audience could feel the tension and know he was lying, but at the same time give doubt to the audience and castmates, all the while being true to the character/player

One thing about Winning Times is that there were a group of people who were just as notable as the players. They were the referees whose weapon was the whistle and they got creative in ways that made them just as famous as the players. Those like Jake O'Donnell, Darrell Garretson, Dick Bavetta, and most notably Earl Strom made themselves famous or infamous for their unique personalities in calling basketball games. Example of this is when Earl Strom made coach Frank Layden watch the game, instead of giving him a early exit as well as making life miserable for Red Aurebach. Love them or hate them, the Referee is an essential part of the game.

SPOILER ALERT.. So Stop reading my comment further if you don’t want to know what happened. That being said That ending credit is a punch in the gut on so many levels. I can imagine survivors guilt, and Larry wondering if he didn’t drop out of college, if his dad might have seen some light at the end of the tunnel. Or just wishing his dad could see his accomplishments as he kept adding those News clippings in that piano. He sure had a rough start, and it made him tough. He spoiled his mama.

Seeing this episode on Larry story I was hoping they didn't show his father kill himself since it's hbo an glad they didn't show it cus it fucked up if they shown that especially since it's birds father but I loved his scene with him playing basketball with the restaurant workers an playing in jeans on the court counting the amount of points he was putting up. I'm waiting for westhead to get out an Pat Riley to become Pat Riley

David Thompson & Magic on the same team would've been awesome. Thompson was Michael Cooper, only 5x player & a better athlete. That combo would've been crazy to see. Seeing Magic throwing ally-oops & other passes to Thompson is crazy that that didn't happen over the coach being jealous.

They really go out of their way to make the actor playing Larry Bird look like shit. Like we get it- Larry wasn't a sex symbol. However this feels like going out of their way to make the man who kept the Lakers from being a dynasty look like garbage while telling his story.

I know what you mean but I'm unsure, man some of the old like when he went to a Celtics game before he joined the team the acne was definitely there. I think he just aged out of it quick after joining the league.

I love the series as I stated before, however this episode I do like them showing the drama with the coaches n staff, didn't really know Jerry West was so involved with the Lakers after his playing days. I was a young buck back then, didn't even know all the teams in the NBA. Growing up in Pa it was all about Dr. J. once I understood the game I became a Lakers fan as well n had double the hate for Larry n the Celtics! Now I have double the respect for him. My only issue is why do they go through a whole season in one episode? Also why don't they show more of the regular season match ups with the Celtics n the Sixers I remember watching those games they were good!
