This was my favorite reading of the diary. For such a young girl, she sure had a way with words and would've surely made an amazing author or journalist. I cried my eyes out at the end...to know they were all separated and terrified at the prospect of what they ultimately endured. My condolences to every ✡️ human being who went through it. Thank yo, Otto, for bringing Anne's diary to life. What would she say?! 😊 I think she would be shocked and surprised by the interest in her words from the world. I just love her. Heartbreaking.

I’ve got to say that I’m not particular fond of this rendition. Yes, Winona’s voice is soothing, but as Anne said she’s “writing from the depths of despair” and it doesn’t capture that. I applaude this nonetheless as it was likely a labor of love. It is difficult to fathom how people can treat one another and I’m grateful that we can shed more light on this matter. God, why can’t we treat one another better?! It’s heart wrenching.

This is a really weird thought... Anne obviously handed her kitty over to neighbours before going into hiding. She also talks about giving her bicycle to some friends for safekeeping. It occurs to me that Otto Frank (and his family) probably arranged for a lot of their special items to be given to friends for safekeeping. And while I suspect much of that has been donated to the Anne Frank, Shoah, or other foundations, I bet you there are bits and pieces out there that some people either kept, or passed on without the new owners knowing who they once belonged to. It would be interesting to do a living history of all the Frank possessions that have been accounted for, and those that are still missing. It would be a tough ask. It's not like this family was in possession of the crown jewels or anything (Other than that diary, and possibly Margot's, which WAS lost). But it would be a definite labour of meeting, greeting, reminiscing, and storytelling, which would make for a wonderful addition to that family's history. The reason that I think this could be a wonderful undertaking? Anne Frank's childhood home (not the Annex, her actual flats she grew up in in Amsterdam) was recently restored and, as far as I know, is now being used to board writers from governments who try to silence them (a beautiful tribute to the memory of Anne and her family and friends). It would be so inspirational for a writer living there to see some of the Franks' belongings and imagine them in the space. They couldn't reside with the writer, of course, too dangerous for the integrity of these antiques, but if I lived in such a place, I'd take photos of every item we've found and create a gallery wall in the flats, so that people could see the evolution of the house's story. Of course, if I lived in that house, I'd also host regular book club meetings, writer's groups, and social awareness discussions. I'd use that space as a legacy. And I'd probably always feel like a guest there too heh

I cried myself to sleep a lot at that age and still get overwhelmed by loneliness regularly. My best advice is to practice coaching and nurturing yourself in the ways you would want others to do it. Keep pursuing as many healthy things as possible that bring you joy and peace, whether it's alone or with others. Practice identifying how or if people show they care about you and who respect what you bring to the table. Use any resources you can to learn, grow, and support yourself. Pushing through loneliness and other struggles takes a lot of trial-and-error. Be your best friend through it all.

I'm a bit confused. I picked up the book so I could follow along and the words said in this audiobook are not the ones written on my page. A lot of the details are the same. It's clearly the same story about the same girl but the words are different. How many editions of this book are there and which edition is this audiobook? I don't think it corresponds with the physical copy I have.

2:47:52 “Oh baloney”? I’m sure Anne Frank did not say that.
@KatoFrankPodcast
@KatoFrankPodcast 3 жыл бұрын
A quick Google search shows that the slang use of the word "baloney" originated in the 1920s, based on Bologna, Italy (famous for making sausage and regional to Anne). The term was popularized in the 1930s, while the diary was written in the 1940s. Anne was also clearly a voracious consumer of information and also wanted to be a writer. You might be right about the interpretation, but her direct use of the word is also very plausible.
@lorelei1761

@@KatoFrankPodcast Sure but Anne Frank’s diary was written in dutch, occasionally she used German and English words. Baloney is not a word she used, obviously this has been altered to suit an American audience..

@@essen00cat Very true, I agree it can be frustrating. However, language is a very complex code. Consider how many versions and translations of the Bible there are, the best-selling book of all time. Wikipedia states that considerations for translation can include linguistic, philological, ideological, dynamic equivalence, formal/literal equivalence, and idiomatic/paraphrastic approaches.
