CDI = Capacitor Discharge Ignition. My guess is that the capacitor itself is failing because it is underrated for the rate of change of voltage Dv/Dt. If accessible, the capacitor could be replaced but the circuit is probably potted in resin.

Have a settling tank between the shallow well and the holding tank. Or, make that sump pump in the shallow well float.
@emerybarg6424
@emerybarg6424 Ай бұрын
For a sediment filter…. Add a settle tank. Your filtered water goes into the settle tank and let it sit. Then you pump that into your consumption tank. You will eventually have to muck out the settle tank, but you should get years of use before you need to do that.

Riley. I used to be a military generator mechanic. The reason you did not have oil pressure is because the engine does not produce oil pressure when the engine is not running. You can ignore the fault indicator panel for the oil pressure at the beginning of start up. The generator should also have a safety shut off switch that will shut down the generator if you have low oil pressure to protect the engine. Hope this helps.

For your roads you need to make a 10’ wide drag beam, I used a I-beam 12” in height X 6” in width I welded two pieces of pipe at both ends as stabilizers at both ends. I welded two heavy duty D rings at center two feet in from both ends At center of your 6” field. It works perfect, leaving you with very nice roads summer and winter. I attached 7’ x 3/8” heavy equipment chains at these points. I pull this with a Kubota SVL95-2S skid steer. I use this on roads and pads all the time !

Diatomaceous earth as used in swimming pool filters really work. You could simply use a swimming pool filter. Not the small one but what we call a sand filter. When the sand gets dirty you simply backwash the filter to clean it. Most pool pumps run daily for 5 years before most people replace it's sand.

I might even go so far as to suggest a coarser sand for pre-filter followed by the cartridge filter you're currently using.. a significant consideration is making certain the pump you're using can push the water through all of that filtration.
@TheFarrryan
@TheFarrryan Ай бұрын
@@ToeKneeBee725slow sand filter tanks are normally top feed , so the pump would be open ended . The water would then flow through the sand bed and be be collected below . If the tank was placed higher than the storage tank, gravity would allow it to run in to be treated further by the ozone disinfection process already mentioned. Basically small scale principle of a water treatment plant.

Riley, I worked on heavy equipment most of my career. Servicing engines in the winter is never fun. You may be using multiviscosity oil. This type of oil is ONLY multivis under operating temp. My suggestion would be to run the engines prior to oil change. This allows the additives in the oil to " thin" to the point it will flow. Instead of waiting for thick syrup to drain, the oil will thin to the point it will flow. Also, as an added benefit, the oil will pick up the settled contaminants lurking in the low spots in the engine. The oil additives that make oil multiviscosity are akin to molecular sized coil springs. In the summer when the oil gets hot, the coils contract, causing the oil to get thicker. In the winter the coils expand causing oil to get thinner. This happens at operating temp. Even though these additives are microscopic, the moving parts in the engine cleave these coils. The detergents in the additives package pick up the contaminants. The oil eventually wears out. This info may help in your matainance process.

Today living off grid is a novelty for many - I had a grate uncle that started working on rural home light plants when the generators were powered by steam engines for battery charging in the 1880s - My grandfather was his helper at 7 yrs old then in 1900 or so he went to work on rural home light plants - I live in the rural South - REA was still setting power poles in the early 60s were in at - Many had homes powered by a bank of Exide or Gould set of 2 volt cells that made up 32 volts and were called those homes 32 volt homes - Any appliance in rural towns that were sold that ran on 110 volts AC - had a counter part for rural homes that were 32 volts DC - Since all rural homes were off grid those with electricity were 32 volts DC most of the time - I spent my yrs working on generators in the offshore and remote northern mountain oilfields in the US - Even the old delco light plant generators were very efficient compared to modern domestic and military generators - a modern propane generator converts 1 gallon of propane to roughly 2 lbs of power and a diesel converts one gallon of fuel to about 4 wks - Inverter generators do much better on fuel since they run at lower rpms at half load - The old delco 32 volt rural home light plants were known to generate 5 to 6 wks on a gallon of kerosene and lasted for 40 yrs or 24000 hrs between rebuilds - Most rural light plants battery's were sized to run a house 6 days then the battery's were charged all day in winter once a week down here - In summer since fridges and fans ran a lot they had to charge all day twice a week - Most battery banks down here for homes were 21 KWs of usable power - As long as it does not get below 0° F they used a weaker acid strength of 1.190 and had 17 or 18 cells instead of 16 cells to make up for voltage drop of weak acid - With a weaker acid the battery lasted for 60 or 70 yrs of cycling - they don't shed hardly at all and sulfate very little also terminals don't corrode - Hurricanes and ice storms can knock my grid power out for very long periods - I have a bank of battery's with 1.210 acid strength - since there on a float and not used often they might last well over 100 yrs in stand by use - I have a old hot oil stationary generator - it runs at 350 RPMs and generates 17 to 20 KWs per gallon of fuel for charging - at those low RPMs they will run 24/7 for 12 to 15 yrs till the rings and connecting rod inserts are changed - Head gasket are never changed - it's $50 of parts or less - Arrow and Ajax make stationary engines for oil field service that runs on propane or natural gas - There's 1000s of used ones out there also - As for diesel he can have a truck come deliver bulk fuel - in my case I call the fuel depot when I need 500 gallons of fuel delivered - If you seal the tank with a 8 pound safety valve so the tank does not breathe air in and out it will never oxidize and stay good for a 1000 yrs -

Sediment fix. Create another tank but out of concrete block. Make the floor of one corner angled to a sealable trap door (for cleaning). Pump the well water into the concrete tank at the edge of the opposite side from trap door. Fix the shut-off setup to the concrete tank and make the water outlet 2 foot high from floor. The concrete tank will fill slow & not disturb sediment and continually fill household tank. Once a year, clean the sediment from concrete tank. The size of concrete tank should depend on the amount of sediment you expect to collect. My Dad was a master plumber & we grew up on spring water (a lot of sediment). Key is the sediment dropping to tank bottom before the water reaches the outlet to household tank. You could use a setup used in toilet tanks (with float) for automatic shut-off/on inside household tank. When the water is low in the household tank, the float will cause the pipe from concrete tank to open and fill the household tank. No electric needed.

You can do that with trees intentionally Riley, it's called girdling.. You score thru the trees bark all the way around tree for about 6" to a foot ( small diameter vs larger) vertically to cause tree to dry out well before you harvest tree. It will allow it to dry out and season in place greatly reducing weight and decreasing time spent cutting and seasoning conventionally. PS you can push that Jeeps roof up just using people power, and if needed put a 2x4 prop post in place to stop it collapsing. Get some of that ZIP tape on any creases to waterproof it enough to stop dome lights shorting or catching fire

16:58 for your sediment issues, I can think of two ways to deal with it: 1) put a spacer on the pump that a) keeps it up off of the bottom, and b) causes it to pull in water from the sides and above. You could use your 3D printer for fast prototypes, then make it in brass since that will make it antimicrobial. Or 2) make a set of traps or lochs to allow just the water to overflow and the sediment to settle out of the water. It would be pretty easy to design and build out of concrete with an opening to remove the build up. This could easily be put in the ground between the dug well and the tank. The first would use no more power than you are currently using, but you’d still likely need a filter for the 5-10% that still got through as it was too well mixed with the water. The second would possibly need a pump added depending on the elevation change between the two. If there is even an 18” drop, it should be plenty as you are only really wanting the water that overflows the last loch anyway. Hope that works or inspired an idea!
@mattlane7888

I’ve seen the second option work very well with above ground spring water systems. Using only gravity feed from elevation change with a series of 55 gal drums as sediment traps. Appreciate you sharing your knowledge on this as well!

You guys must be MIT graduates on engineering lol the place you have is so awesome too I have an off grid cabin and yes there’s always something to fix and learn the only water I have is two large ibc totes that catch rain water I’m just using the front and one side of the cabin and it works great I’m gonna use the other side in the near future bu instead of gutters I’m going to use a 6 inch pvc pipe cut in half long ways I can make hangers easily and pvc pipe is cheaper too and so many things are available for it but I use a 12vdc tv water pump with a pressure drop switch and a master switch in the cabin

Love that the compressor is so far away and keeps the noise down. To save the walking, is there a way you can put a remote switch that runs off of the WiFi to save you walking back and forth? Then just buy an auto drain of eBay for about $50 and put it on a timer to drain the tank.

You two would be great blue water sailors, with your independent, self reliant personalities. Maybe once your kiddo(s?) is older you can explore that world of beautiful boats and locals. Plus you'll never get bored, since boats constantly need upkeep and repairs! ⛵️ 🛠

Dear Courtney and Riley, I want to tell you that my wife and I watch every episode of yours and enjoy it very much. Now I have a question for you, which drawing program do you use for the 3D printer. We own a Snapmaker 2.0: 3 in one machine namely 3D, laser, CNC Printer. Kind regards and a happy Christmas and New Year from Amina and Koos and Rocky from Leiden The Netherlands

Always always fantastic videos. I really look forward to seeing them every week. I hope the new 90 day house is almost done at least the outside? I’ve been using bambu labs printers for a long time. They are fantastic. I was really happy when I saw you got a printer a little while ago. Very cool.

Just a recommendation, I don't know how far you live from the city or nearest town but just wanted to say that get a pellet stove rather then a wood stove, you don't have to fill up pellet stoves as often as wood ones! Other than that love you videos😊 One more thing i have a pellet maker at home I bought it of aliexpress but works just fine i use old engine oil in it so pellets come out nice!

We remember when you put on the folding door for your workshop. I said to my wife that is so horribly dangerous when one cable breaks the other will follow. Please consider an overhead door and get rid of that death trap. We've enjoyed the show since you started and wouldn't want anything seriously bad to happen because we didn't say something to you. I know what your pride and joy at a thing of beauty to you but a roll up door overhead door would not be that much more expensive than what you've done. Please reconsider that door and put in a new overhead door is a project. Thank you for reading.

You should use an Ultrafiltration membrane that is PVDF. They are field serviceable and you can clean them and reinstall. They have various sizes to meet your gallons-per-day need to transfer the water from one tank to the other.

you should consider running an electrical line from your compressor to the shop switch it in the shop or if need be, add a three way switch.

try using a settling tank as a sediment filter. I've seem them used to filter water feeding a ram pump, I think it would work in your situation.

Bell settlement filter i think its called? You would have an inlet a few inches horizontally, into a settlement tank. a 90° up a few inches to an opening. Around that opening you would have a fixed cap to allow the water to flow out of the vertical inlet dispersing down and around the inlet. The sediment falls and you outlet is higher than the inlet on the other side of the tank. Longer the tank the more effective. Should work with your current pumps
