Hi, greetings from Alaska, I am 72 years old and lived here all my life and never lived in a city or big town. One thing I've learned through the years, never buy a machine that doesn't have pull start. Starting with a key is nice but, if you are way out somewhere and that key won't start, you are shit out of luck. Those Can Am's are nice though. Walking on ice? Take 2 pieces of round wood that fits you hands comfortably, drill a small hole in each of them and force a nail in each one, points out. Tie a piece of rope through the ends make it long enough to go over your shoulders so you can grab them and use them to pull yourself out. Hope I taught you something and the advice is free, LOL. I did like your video.

My first machine had a pull start, used it a couple times. But I had no trouble at all with the old ATV, which was essentially the same machine I have now. I suspect gremlins.

Russell, the jump-start battery won't start the ATV with the integral battery at 4.7 volts because that's almost a short-circuit. It should start the ATV with the integral battery disconnected but that won't get it charged. Best plan is to buy a spare battery and keep it connected to an "intelligent charger" in the house. Don't let it drop below freezing temperature. (Ideally, don't let the ATV battery drop below 5°C either but that would require some form of heater and thermostat.) Your previous ATV probably used a different type of battery that withstood low temperatures better. I notice that this battery is lying on its side, which might not help.

I only get three years with my battery on the riding lawn mower. Even trying to use my jump starter box or even a charger will not let the mower start on the fourth year because it's just too dead and worn out to accept the charge and have to just replace the battery at less than thirty dollars a battery. So for a solid three years of work for that price is fine with me. I suppose if I brought the battery into the house every winter I may get more use out of it. But I'm old fat and so lazy to worry about it. Thanks again for sharing.

Cold weather will drain atv batteries in as quick as two weeks . Some atv have constant power draw even when not running for memory on electronics . You need a certain amount of power in the battery at all times or the EFI parts of the quads will not work including starting . You could wire in a battery tender and just have the plug sticking out and give it a trickle charge when not using . Also even when try jump start your atv battery to low will not allow your atv to start or run its all to do with EFI electronic part darn computers .
@RaspberryRockOffGridCabin5 жыл бұрын

Just watched on my other channel, but I'm going to comment with this one. Well, can am's are known here in Saskatchewan to be big babies when it comes to cold. One thing to solve the issue is to replace the OEM battery with a dry cell AGM. Expensive but worth every penny. Or you could get a Yamaha. By far my fav machine for cold weather. It can be scary to get stuck or stranded in the wrong conditions. I really hope this info can be useful to you. Someone probably already said the same thing haha. Anyway keep on with the videos! Russ, check the voltage when you start, the battery should drop no lower than to 10.5 or 11. Once started if it climbs immediately to 13 +/- your good. If it doesn't, either the battery is toast or the alternator isn't maintaining running voltage/recharge. The only time a battery gets that low (from experience) is when the alternator isn't functioning properly and your actually running the machine on mattery power. Once it gets low enough (5 or so) it is done. You may be OK though since it took a warm house charge and started right up. Check it though my friend.
@RaspberryRockOffGridCabin5 жыл бұрын
It's a strong possibility that maybe it wasn't reading correctly? That's a stupidly low voltage. I'm pretty sure I know how to use a multimeter, but I might have gotten it wrong.

Bad battery or the atv has some fancy electronics sucking the battery dry. (i bet the Wizzard has a tester to check if your battery is healthy) CCA - cold crank amperage can be pretty bad in some cheapo batteries. An easy to reach kill switch for the battery would not be a stupid feature to add, especially in your situation. Just to eliminate the chance that the atv is sucking the battery dry. (English is not my native language, hope my writing is somewhat understandable)

I can't believe it! Someone else who can start a fire without tiny bits of what they call "kindling" before placing the logs on. Just a bit of crumpled up newspaper and the logs and you have a fire. Saves so much time and effort when you aren't spening hours chopping your wood into tiny 1" by 1" by 12" pieces just to start every one of your fires. Not to mention the risk to your frozen hands chopping them up on days of minus 20-40 F. You know your wood is properly dried/seasoned when all you need is a bit of paper/tinder to get it going.
@RaspberryRockOffGridCabin5 жыл бұрын
I've struggled in past years with wood that wasn't well seasoned. At the moment I'm using wood left over from last winter, and it's been a pleasure to burn. Oh yeah the "let's chop this little stick of wood into 1000 pieces to start this fire" makes good video, but it's somewhat unnecessary.

A jump starter is fine for jumping if its fully charged. But i think you need a real battery charger, and a new battery.11 volts is a dead battery, and 4.5 volts means that battery is toast. Disconnect the battery, and put your volt tester on it, If the reading slowly go's down every few seconds, or minutes, the battery needs to be replaced. A good fully charged battery should put out between 13 and 14 volts,
@bettinah.74295 жыл бұрын
Well that really suck about the four wheeler. It is not very old I think they should replace the battery. And yes you are going to get flack from me about walking on the ice . It is too early to be reliably safe,our weather has not been consistently cold enough. This time you were lucky. I am saying this out of genuine concern not just to be bossy,lol.

Bettina, how will I know if the ice is safe to walk on if I don't try it?
@bettinah.74295 жыл бұрын
Raspberry Rock - Off Grid Cabin well Russell I am no expert but I believe that the advice given is that the weather has to have been consistently very cold for some time without warm fluctuations so that the ice freezes completely without bubbles or voids. I guess also taking a sample by boring a hole works. But I think you know these things and are just being silly. You got lucky nothing happened but I guess my point is that that may lead you to be less cautious in the future. 😉 I would love to have the chance to meet up with you and Alicia one day so her and I can have a tequila shot in person and I would also love to visit you two at the cabin one day and enjoy the beauty there. Russell, hopefully it was just a bad connection at your battery. In the video it looked like the screws offered no real resistance while backing them out. If the jump starter clamps were only on the battery post and not on the wires going to the bike, a bad connection would still prevent starting and charging from the bikes alternator.
@RaspberryRockOffGridCabin5 жыл бұрын
Hey Skip. I'll consider that if it happens again. Still disappointing to find the battery down that low after only a few days.
@LongsQuest5 жыл бұрын
Not saying this is the case with your Can-Am, but I have seen a few vehicles that had normally closed relays for lights and other critical devices; guess this was for safety, if the coil in the relay burned out while driving, it would fail in the on position. If this is the case and you had a bad connection at the battery preventing it from charging. The voltage could eventfully drop low enough to allow the relay to close allowing the circuit to finish off the charge in the battery. See you tonight..@@RaspberryRockOffGridCabin

I thought I was the only one who cuts their bacon in half with a pair of scissors. Nice woodstove and feet up, coffee, doggie..........I call it "Stovin' ". The atv issue is a weird one. That jumpstarter should start it "its able to start a car", yep. I do know batteries don't like the freezing cold, and usually when they go its during the dead of winter. I was thinking perhaps you have a parasitic load like a malfunctioning switch for instance constantly drawing current from somewhere, or corroded terminals, perhaps when the battery is internally fubar it does not want to allow the jumpstarter to allow current, or it creates a voltage drop. These are just ideas and i'd think with the jumpstarter leads connected directly to not only the battery terminals but also the wires for the whole shibang that should let it start up. Small Motorcycle batteries do not like big car chargers, but jumpstarters i do not know. I keep my motorcycle constantly hooked up to a "battery tender". Sometimes when things like that are going wrong its very upsetting and make you feel like "i dont need this" and you may insist on working on it the wrong way. so going for a hike, and letting it charge up was a great approach. and then i feel like somedays when that happens its because "todays not the day" for that, and its better to just do it some other day.
@RaspberryRockOffGridCabin5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments Dave. You're probably right about the parasitic load. Fortunately it hasn't happened since.

Okay, you learned one lesson that day. Take out your battery each time you won't be using the can-am and put it inside in the warmth. And let it run for awhile or go for a good ride with it at least. Do not turn it off, just let it run.. you need to take care of every battery or it will not do what it supposed to and cold is it's worst enemy, that is also with a laptop or camera batteries.. I even would buy a stronger one but that's me. I like overkill.

Taking the battery out is terribly inconvenient.

@@RaspberryRockOffGridCabin Well, mabye a trickle loader is something to think about. Every winter when I do not use my motorcycle, she is on a trickle loader. Didn't want to buy a new battery every year. Those loaders don't cost a World price anymore and my motorcycle is happy and I am, since my wallet doesn't have that problem anymore 😁

@@mademoisellekaya1438 I guess what annoys me is that my old ATV never had this problem.

@@RaspberryRockOffGridCabin I know right.. that is pretty frustrated and it is just pure disappointment.. I'm sorry I can't help any further, wished I could. Maybe a early Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones will help a little tiny bit .. 👊☺

Sorry Russell but I hope your audio cuts out more often. The commentary you put in after the fact made me laugh and brightened my day! Love your videos especially the parts with the pups!

Weird about the bike. My Max has not had a battery problem (yet). And it's the original from 2010.

Yah Pat, my old bike was a 2010 as well, never had any problems like that. Might be some new fancy electronic thing, we'll see.
