Love your channel mate Nothing wrong with cheese as a bait Once shared a house boat on the Murray at Echuca years ago with my lot and a family of seven We moored at the end of the day and I told everyone I thought I'd try using the handline to catch the infamous Murray cod but the only bait on hand was leftover cheese cubes Well as soon as I dropped the baited hook in the water one of the local ducks did what they do - it duck-dived and came up with the hook stuck in its bill Pandemoneum erupted with everyone screaming at the sight of me trying to bring in my first flying fish !! Managed to pry the hook out and it was no worse for wear The one that flew away ....

Thanks so much Gav. I'm hoping 5i head out again tomorrow and will be leaving that hook on. That's my lucky hook. Haha
@ziongite2 жыл бұрын
I use hooks that are of a thinner metal deliberately, because if I get a bad stag, I can pull on the line and the hook itself will literally bend and I can get off the snag, the hook usually will be ruined, but you just replace it. I used to use stronger hooks, and I could never get them off the snag because the hook was just so robust, as a result I would have to cut the line, leaving line and sinkers and hooks in the water, I didn't like that. There is no downside to using a hook with a thinner metal I find, because barely any fish is going to have the strength to deform it, unless it's a huge cod. The only thing you have to make sure exists on the thinner hook, is that the barb is still significant. Some thinner hooks have a pathetic barb because they came in with the machine too directly and you can't cut deep into it, you want the hooks where they came in at like an acute angle and grabbed a lot of metal, that's where you get a good 2mm+ barb. Essentially anything with metal thicker than metal on a paper clip, I won't use, because I know i won't be able to get it back off a snag, and I get snagged all the time here in Australia rivers. I also find that hooks with a longer shaft are better. Because most of the time as the fish struggles, it will be rubbing this shaft across it's teeth and such, and so it won't break your line. When using very short hooks I found that fish break the line far more often, and I think it's because the fishing line is always going to be rubbing against it's teeth a lot as the shaft isn't long enough to project out that far. So usually I am looking for hooks with around a 5cm shaft and upwards. I think the type of hook that I find the best is called the Aberdeen hook, at least that's what it's known as in the English speaking world. This has a long shaft, and is usually quite thin.
