Using cheese to catch Murray Cod

As the weather begins to cool down and Autumn sets in, Murray Cod start going off the bite and progressively get harder to catch as we head towards Winter. Knowing that my chances to catch one are slowly dwindling, I set out to hopefully catch a couple more Cod before they go off the bite completely. With the water still high and muddy, I left my lures at home and headed down to the river with a container full of cubed tasty cheese ready to be put on the hooks. It seems I made the right choice, as it wasn't long at all before I had a nice sized Murray Cod on the end of the line.

Thanks mate! I'm not sure, they probably resemble some kind of egg that can be found in the water sometimes. Often these Cod are found with golf balls inside their stomachs LOL

RKJ Fishing That makes sense. They are kind of like Salmon and Trout. We used pieces of sponge to catch King Salmon because it looks like an egg sac if you cut it right. Golf balls are crazy to find in a fish. They sound more like Tiger Sharks, lol. Take care bud!!

Cheese is highly regarded for catching Murray Cod, I suspect it would work on other types of cod around the world as well. Wow gummy candy? I will have to try that one, maybe I could use gummy snakes like a lure LOL. Thanks friend

Nice vid mate! Great explanation on the wide-gap hooks, too. Have to admit, I've never even thought about using cheese as bait. What kind of cheese do you use and do you have any issues with it coming off the hook once it's been soaking for a while?

Thanks mate! It does come off the hook more easily than some other baits, but I find if I put the hook through it twice and cast gently I don't have too many issues. I was using tasty cheese in this video but some people find that mozzarella stays on the hook a bit better

I'm not sure if he was involved with a study but he definitely holds the same opinion as I do regarding the use of cheese as bait, and that it is safe. Until someone shows me documented proof that it's bad for the fish, I will continue using it.

I use a mozzarella cheese and melt some on a sheet of baking paper in the microwave. Hangs on the hook very well. Not sure if it works but heard adding a little parmesan to it may add some smell and work better

Thanks Brayden! Well done on your big bream from your new video as well mate, it still won't let me comment on them. To get the custom thumbnails I take a screenshot of the video when I'm editing it (or you can just use a photo) and then I use Microsoft Publisher to edit the photo and put my logo on it or anything else I want like text, I play with the brightness and contrast a little bit, and then I select all and right click and save it as a new picture, which I can upload to KZbin. Hopefully that makes sense lol

I have always put cheese in a small pot heat it then mould to to the hook in the shape of a grub

Hello Rohan, don't broadcast it to loud LOL, fisheries are totally insane, my nephew got fined $ thousand dollars for leaving his baited rod in the water , he walked away from it to grab a drink from his esky in tent... unfortunately where they were fishing they couldn't set up camp any closer then 80 meters from the water's edge... this happened on the labour day weekend just gone over at cobram...

its not the cheese itself that kills the cod, its the people who take dishcloth and melt the cheese into the cloth and then use that for bait, the cod cant digest the cloth

You could also catch me on cheese mate hahah! Those cod remind me of carp, they eat mostly anything. You sure are a turtle master. Do they allow keeping and eating a turtle? Do those cod prefer muddy water?

Cheese would catch me as well haha. I'm not 100% on the turtle rules but I would think we aren't allowed to keep them. The cod would probably prefer cleaner water but they are an ambush predator so the muddier water might help them hide better
