When Atlanta shut down some years back because of the icing on the roads, I was creeping home for over 10 hours on a drive that normally would have been an hour. What saved me and allowed me to help others that were stuck after sliding across a road, was cat litter. I had five jugs of clumping litter in my car. I poured under my tires. Instant traction. Shared with others and we could help get them straightened in their lane and continue. I always keep at least two in my trunk.

I can attest to the Snuggies. Also, if your electricity is on, put a heating pad under your blankets down by your feet on low setting until you get nice and warm then turn it off. If your feet are warm, you're good. I also only turn on my heater when it's like 40°F and only for a few minutes, just to take the chill out of the air. Last year my gas bill never went above $35 while my neighbors were around $200.

Our magical winter medium is -25 C , with max ab -35 C. It's not actually recommended to keep very low temperature in the houses here during winter, because the cold cools the walls down and warming the house up again so it doesn't cool quickly is hard business - takes more power than just keeping it steady, plus it can create moisture problems later. Just keeping a regular temperature is the best way to go with it. So if you want to keep your house cool, you do it from the start and dedicate small space for winter stay. That said - isolated walls, Finnish warm walls inside the house, not half way outside like in most US plans, warming cables inside the pipes, laterns for power outages, most people still keep winter stores for at least a month, you cover your cars with blankets or keep them in garages. You need a way to remove snow from your roofs, to clean the road, and to start your car at home/charge the battery. Oh, and you buy all your meds out if you possibly can, because you might get stuck at home while waiting for the weather to thaw so the car starts again. It's a lot of work, but as long as you think ahead and prepare through the warm time instead start in November, you will be ok. First winters are always hard, next ones you'll be smarter.

Non ethanol is an absolute must!! I've grown up in my father's shop (shops been going 30 years) I CANNOT emphasize how important non ethanol is in freezing temperatures and long-term storage. Fixing gummed up carburetors is 60% of work all because ethanol. The fuel degrades and becomes jell. We tell every single customer to use it. We know the ones who don't because they come back in a few months with the same exact carburetor issues.

Up in Michigan. Have endured week long power outages , no big deal. However this past summer I made a change. Purchased and installed a tri-fuel carburator for my generator. Took a little tuning but runs great now. Priority fuel is the NG. It is the least expensive per watt hour and if it stops flowing from the utility company then the furnace, stove, and oven will stop working too. In the event that happens I can run on propane or gasoline for power however heating and cooking options will shift also. Honestly I could care less about power for technology, my focus is refrigeration, heating, cooking, and sanitation.

I keep shoe treads in my car and Get-home-bag. Black ice or just icy surfaces can land you an injury and delay your trip. Another thing I pack is Vaseline. It DOES NOT prevent frostbite, but it keeps moisture off your nose, ears, fingers, nostrils, chin, cheeks and toes, which seems like it would help prevent ice crystals from forming as it is a moisture barrier. Any feedback on that concept? It can also be used to waterproof shoes, gloves, and on your lips.

I live in Minnesota. We heat with wood but we have propane back up. The major problem with propane is does not vaporize at negative 40 degrees, making it useless at those times. Lmao 50 degrees we call "bikini weather". Haha. Right now we are at 40 degrees but the windchill has us at 32 degrees. We are outside stacking wood in the shed, fixing facia and soffit and winterizing the animals coops and pens No matter the weather, it has to be done. I have to remind myself that when times get tough the tough get going. Lol. Especially when all I want to do is curl up by the fire and read a good book. Haha. Not happening.

I can relate. Sometimes it seems as if my whole (well almost whole) summer is spent getting ready for winter. We built a new chicken coop so the chickens aren't constantly getting under the tarps that cover the hay in the hay shed. The garden and greenhouses provide fresh food and food for canning, dehydrating, etc. New York state doesn't get as cold as Minnesota thank goodness! But, still, you have to be ready. Hay, grain, shavings, food for people, too!

Don, I hope you do a video on the terra-cotta pot heater. I am curious to see how much heat it actually produces! (I watched an episode of Good Eats, where Alton Brown used terra-cotta pots to create a grill, and later a smoker! 🍽🍗)
@palominogirl2732
@palominogirl2732 Жыл бұрын
I tried that terra cotta pot heater in a couple different ways, in fall when I only needed a bit of heat overnight. I had the house buttoned down to about 400 square feet, nine candles underneath it, the curved vent on top, etc. But I have to say, after three hours of watching tv in bed with blankets on, that heater did nothing. When the candles burnt down, that was it, I turned the heat on so my house wasn't 55 when I woke up in the morning. After hours of burning, I could still put my hands on the pot - not for a long time, just for a moment. I tried one pot in another, various ways. Not worth it. So, until I get a woodstove, if the power goes out, I have two generators, 4 Mr. Buddies, and the 'daisy' round heater things for on top of a propane tank.

When you live in the southern US as you all do, it's easy to tell us to keep our heat set to lower then 72°. Northern states have totally different weather in winter months. Turning the thermostat down in the winter for us is totally different than for South Carolina. Older people can't take the cold like younger people. Mentioning turning the thermostat down to 50 to 55 degrees here in the northern states is just not practical. It takes a lot more energy to bring a house back up to even 68° when it's 5° outside with wind chills below zero. Pipes can freeze on outside walls or in basements that aren't insulated. I know you guys are speaking from your own perspectives based on where you live but more than half of Americans live in the north where winters are brutal at times. Another point I want to make is about burning green wood even if it's only one piece. Don't do that please! Think about where your channel followers may live please.

My prepping is done with the assumption that there will be NO electricity. I live in the Adirondack mountains. My end goal is to not need electricity for anything. Hand pump on the well, wood heat, ice house, etc. The best way to be ready for grid down is to eliminate dependency on the grid. COMPLETELY! Also. Please include reference material for your claims. (I'm just supposed to take your words on it that there was an attack on a nuclear power plant? That terrorists were caught coming in from Mexico?) If I can't verify the information it's just hearsay.
