Grand design’s aren’t ‘really’ meant for freezing weather. If you ever think about another unit... Consider looking at Cougar as they are tested to 0° and have a few differences to the Grand Design line such as valves that are up, inside the enclosed heated underbelly. (Frozen valves as I’m sure you know are a bear. LOL!)
@HappilyEverHanks3 жыл бұрын
@@Erin-Thor Oh interesting, we had no idea!! Thank you for the insight Erin. Do you currently live in a Cougar or in any RV for that matter?
@Erin-Thor3 жыл бұрын
@@HappilyEverHanks - No, just doing homework for a future purchase. I like snow too, bounce around Colorado a lot. At the low end price points (I’m not rich) there are apparently three manufacturers that make units that are actually intended for cold weather, Arctic Fox (northern manufacturing? I think), Outdoors RV (several lines), and the Cougar line which is one line of many from Rockwood. Of those I believe Cougar is the only one whose warranty isn’t voided if you are a full time RV’er. They design and test their units for a temperature range from 110° to 0° F, so decent wall, roof, floor thicknesses, water lines run underneath next to your heat ducts so they don’t freeze, furnace heat is directed to the enclosed tank areas, as well as 12v tank heater pads if you’re at an RV park or anywhere w electrical service. Etc., do a search here on KZbin if you’re interested. Haylet RV makes some informative videos (no affiliation). I do day trading so I’m looking for a unit with a small office in it, Cougar has a 5th wheel in their 1/2 ton class that does. Note, it’s not towable by a half ton pickup, 3/4 ton at least... they lie. LOL!
@HappilyEverHanks3 жыл бұрын
@@Erin-Thor Oh nice! That pays off huge doing the research ahead of time instead of rushing in to make the purchase. Yeah, they are starting to make a lot more RV's conducive to full time RV living as well which is great. Our Solitude has been really amazing to us so far. It has the features you mentioned. Our tank heaters have been on constantly since coming to Pennsylvania LOL Hope you find the right RV for yourself so that you can have a small office on the road :) When do you plan on hitting the road?
@Erin-Thor3 жыл бұрын
@@HappilyEverHanks - In about a year. Grand Designs do have ducted heat, and a vent into the UNINSULATED tank area, and 12v tank heaters (which can’t be used for extended times w/o electricity), but their valves are exposed like our old Airstreams were. What I mean is the handles are outside, but the valves that hold the tank water back are also outside exposed. Cougar and a few others move the valves up, inside the enclosed heated areas. We like boondocking for a week, coming into a town for an overnight stay at an RV park to clean clothes, dump, refill water & gas, pick up mail, shop, etc. When your valves freeze, you can’t dump until they thaw, this can take days and is a pain in the behind, pun intended. 🤪

After watching your video I decided to cover my camper much like a boat. I built a ridge pole the entire length of the camper. Before I tarped over the top of the camper I put down some insulation. It's pretty cozy and sheds the snow like a metal roof. On a side note, I'm so glad I sold my house and got out of debt. I went from being minus at the end of the month to having a surplus. First time since I got divorced 5 years ago that I've been able to save money week to week. Yahooie! 🙂

Hey guys! We obviously got hit with the same storm over the weekend. But, we only got 6-8 inches....not Snowmageddon. Two words for ya...Pool Noodles! Take a cheap pool noodle & cut it halfway through down the center. It will slip onto the edges of your slides to protect the noggin. I would imagine a piece between your propane door & the tank would quieten the banging down too. Always check the steps for ice before walking outside. A broken hip stinks & you know the rehab time. Brings back memories of spending a year in a non-winterized 5th wheel (for work) in Denver. The stories....A quick one: the sideout was hydraulic and would bleed off a bit over a period of time. The trailer was impossible to heat so it would get incredibly cold inside...Anyway there were more than a few days that I'd walk into the kitchen in the morning and the hydraulics had bled )creating about a 1" gap on the sideout) and find a pile of snow on the kitchen floor that I'd have to snow shovel out...lol...most of those memories were very cringy nightmares...

Full time fifth wheeled in Alaska for 10 years year round! Insulated the whole RV & sewer & water & well house box & kept tanks open at all times so I never had to pull them & always had water as well. Over the 10 years we used electric heat, big pellet stove we installed & a ventless propane heater & the propane furnace that burnt up right off the bat because it couldn’t handle the constant running. Ventless propane was our favorite & worked if electricity went off & the pellet stove but it took up a lot of space & a chore to clean & you had to store the pallets of pellets & it was very dusty. -22° is the coldest we had it & 13ft of snow was the most in one winter. We hit -30° on the trip up to Alaska at Laird hot springs in Canada in 2011 in November.

Always clear the snow from the roof of the truck... nothing worse than having it slide forward over the windshield and completely obscure your view when you hit the brakes... We are currently RV living in Central Montana right now where it was -15 this morning, not including wind chill 🥴🥴 So far we have had our pickup take a 💩 on us (not weather related, lol), our hydrant line break 6 feet under ground due to someone backing into it so we had a river and ply board Bridge out front for a few days 🤣, our hose freezing up numerous times (had to bring it into the camper to thaw), propane ran out and couldn't get furnace lit again and had to go warm up in the car (rookie mistake), water heater wouldn't heat after getting water again after the hydrant was fixed... all within a NOT EVEN TWO WEEK PERIOD!! 🤣 BUT - other than our mistakes that we have made and learned from so far, we have stayed surprisingly warm and cozy, had running water for showers and dishes (such a luxury!) and are doing pretty darn good and loving our snowy mountain views!! Reflectix has been our best friend, as well as foam board and foil tape! We keep a thermometer underneath near the pipes to monitor the temp underneath. We also took heat tape and put it along our hose and then put pool noodle type insulation over it so that we don't have to worry about a frozen hose anymore! All we have to do is go in and out to turn the hydrant on and off when we need to use it. But we can't wait for spring so we can get outside again!! Shoot me a message at brit.ras on Instagram if you're interested in our hose system for water 😊 stay warm you guys!!

Good tips on winter RV Living, yea we still have our home, we are glad we do as 2020 happened and now 2021, has us grounded due to family health issues that we need to be near to take care of them. I love being in my trailer in the snow. Last year I had about a foot of snow on the roof and its surprising the insulation effect. Super quiet, and with no place I needed to be, its was nice. As long as I have power, I have a small space heater that keeps it manageable. I have been down to the low 20's, but thats about it. Actually my power bill is higher in the summer from the AC.
@HappilyEverHanks3 жыл бұрын
Yeah we enjoy it too, we have come to have a bittersweet love for the snow lol I guess from now on I will leave the snow on the roof of the RV to help with the insulation like you said! Question: Does the snow piled up around the trailer actually help with insulation? Once the wind is blocked from going under the trailer, wouldn't that help keep the underside warm? Oh! And for your sewer connection; if you cut out little spaces for magnets in the corners of the cut out and the piece you put over the opening, you can just stick the cover back in place. Use shoe glue to attach the magnets.

ANOTHER entertaining video! Way to go guys! You gave me just enough info to confirm...winter RV’n isn’t for me! It never really was my plan! I’ve had enough winter living in 🇨🇦. I would REALLY like to see the Coconino County area. I think it’s referred to as the “Scarlet Whorls of Stone”. Not sure if it’s worth a “Happily Ever Hanks” episode, but just a suggestion! Stay warm, stay safe! Looking forward to your video next Thursday!

LOL I think we honestly found out that winter RV'ing isn't for ourselves either! I bet you are overexposed to the winter being up in Canada and all. You need some hot, sunny days!!Where is the Coconino County area located?? Never heard of that! It intrigues us, so I am sure we can make that an episode one day :)

@@HappilyEverHanks Coconino County AZ. Known for its scarlet whorl of stone, White Pocket in Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, Coconino County, Arizona, USA I pulled that all off google. So honestly I have no idea. Looks gorgeous! I would be lying to you if I acted like I knew about it! Won’t do that!!!

@@brianayles4454 LOL well we had never heard of it before you told us, so you know more than we do about it!! Sounds amazing there 😃 Arizona sounds amazing in general. Wish we could go there now to escape the cold temperatures 🥶

I have to reinforce that handrail advice. We were finishing up winterizing back in October, and in a momentary lapse Noni slipped on the icy top step, and missed all the other steps...so much pain she nearly passed out. She couldn't think straight, her vision was off, she had numbness in her arms and her ears were ringing. Obviously an ER visit. CT scans showed no fractures or concussion. But much better to grab that railing.
@HappilyEverHanks3 жыл бұрын
Oh my, so sorry that happened to you guys 😔 that’s horrible! So glad that she was ok through it all. With us working in the ER, we don’t want to go there anymore than we have to. Thank you for your personal insight, we definitely will be sure to be extra careful and use that handrail. Are you guys full time RV living?

@@HappilyEverHanks not yet. We have a plan but it's still a couple years out. We're actually grateful we didn't go full time just before the plague struck.

And Dexter suggests you get a piece of wood to fit in between the propane tank so that it doesn't have any room to bang be glad the state parks don't charge by the paw . You would be broke absolutely great video please get rid of anything but Dexter and maybe each other
