great stuff man. here's a tip from native Americans who have for centuries lit fires inside their tents. you want to dig a deep fire pit and never fill it with firewood more than a 3rd of the way as a result you get less smoke because the smoke has time to get to a hot enough temperature to incinerate and whatever is left over will fly straight up because it'l be much hotter smoke than from a shallow pit. from a shallow pit the smoke tends to wallow and a deep cylindrical pit it shoot right up. sort of like the way a stove burns the smoke out on its way through the pipe. if you get smoke you're "burning" no smoke means the stove is running hot enough and you're "incinerating", that's what you want. also for an indoor fire only use the dries't of woods as wet and oily wood smokes up like hell.

Good to see you get out there in the heart of the winter to make the place livable. Love the use of the reeds. Now, even though the roof is temporary, A good strong wind or heavy snow and that roof is going to be shredded plastic all over the woods. As large a roll as you brought out there, I would have done a complete wrap around on the poles, rolled the top down with cordage to make the smoke hole and tied it off up there and down lower edging, I would have gotten stones and made buttons and tied them down either to stakes or to the shelter structure itself. Those knife holes are going to spread as the weather has her way with it. No holes, no shred. And it is not like I am some longtime expert on this subject. I just learned last year from a youtuber who did a dollar store bug out survival kit and used a shower curtain as an emergency shelter and showed how to do the button thing. Now I use it on my homestead as tarps are cheaper made every year, it seems and those eyelets rip out. So, it has been button time and it has saved me a ton of hassle. So, great job and just passing on what I learned and hope it helps you. BTW, still not too late to redo the bottom edge with buttons before a heavy snow or high wind comes and shreds your hard work.

Watching you on Alone, even though that was quite some time ago. I can see why you won. Out of all of the people on that show, you seemed to be the one person that kept your positive attitude about you better then most. I really think that was what helped you the most, along with your motivation. You are a amazing person Fowler. You have really come along way since Alone I hope everything works out for you and your family. You are deserving of your family. God bless you.

She would be great at teaching contentment, simplicity, self reliance, stitching or whatever. I'd subscribe!

You are so right. I think that is why getting out to practice bush craft or even just camping is so appealing to a city boy like me. You get that sense of accomplishment when you find a good spot and set up a shelter , make a fire and catch your own meal. It's nice to get away from the "instant gratification" culture we live in. It resets our life.

Not sure if anyone checks these comments anymore. I love your content, Mr. Fowler. I watch your older stuff as I lay in bed at the end of my day, so I use closed captioning to keep the volume low, and not bother my wife. Long story short, the wife couldn't sleep due to me laughing at about the 4:25 point. 🤣 Sometimes it's not the sun you want, but the moon. Both are like a pepperoni pizza out of your reach. 😂 Not what you said, but what I read. Your content is amazing and entertaining, even when KZbin makes a wholesome statement not so wholesome.

If instead of putting a hole in your tarp, try using a button. It acts as a grommet. A button is a small rock placed under the edge of your tarp, you squeeze the tarp around the rock from on top place double half hitch around it, now you have a line to tie off without damaging your tarp. Just a thought

This is an extremely enjoyable video to watch. Your activities, content, and cinematography are all exceptional. I appreciate the traditional elements in your dwelling, especially your hearth in this structure. Are you going to dig a breather tube? I wondered about your poles... Maine... red pine? Then you show up with beech. That was a surprise. We are entirely bereft of that noble tree in California wildlands. Now I wonder if you saw or used southern beech in Patagonia. I will have to watch your 87 days show... completely unaware of it previously.

Perhaps a hat over the smoke hole, a square of poles with plastic over them placed on top that could be placed if you get "that rain storm". I'm just used to the torrential down pours we get in AZ, when it would over power the venting of the hole. I don't know, just thinking with my finger tips.

You could take some of that excess clear plastic tarping that you cut off the edge and make that into a door. Great video! I got to try that stick splitting method. I wonder if that method could help with getting perfect strands of bark to make natural cordage as well.

Thank you Fowler, I don’t watch too much TV, so I have never seen you out there, & don’t know why some people choose to be so negative & destructive on these comments... 🤪💕🌎 I learned a thing or two from this video & I so appreciate it. I do, I do, I do; so keep it going! 👍🏼👍🏼 It’s a cute large shelter too, not just a small tiny structure, you can fit in a small Family if needed. 👩👦👦 Now, could I ask; How bad is the smoke, when you build the inside fire? I may need to use some of these techniques while I though it out this winter; but I worry about too much smoke since my lungs may able to take it. BTW, it’s the 2nd video I find of yours & I just want to THANK YOU! Blessing to you all . . . 🙏🏼

Grim Reaper So, what he did in alone doesn't count for you? Ok. He has said, several times that this video series is to show what he used, and improvements of what he used during his 87 days on Alone. This isn't meant to be him doing a squat in the bush with nothing but a knife. It's meant to highlight things that the show didn't think were entertaining enough. I'm sorry that his wish to share knowledge offends you, because he's not 400miles from home and civilization.
@d.a.83356 жыл бұрын
I agree, why so much negativity? Some people just seem to have a deep rooted need to criticize & offend others, without provocation, it’s silly; STOP IT! Show your knowledge on your own video, on your OWN Channel & try to get a good following, without commenting to discourage others that do more than most.
