Special thanks to Erang and Aindulmedir for permission to use their music for this video! Be warned, I assume the following video contains manglings of German, Russian, French, and even Finnish! Time to prepare for the winter...

Hi, I've just stumbled across this, I thought I'd introduce myself. I am the blogger Balbulus who created the Winter Synth blog, and who coined the term. Thank you for your in-depth feature! I'm glad that Winter Synth has grown to become an established term in its own right, and I'm proud to have played a part in its story. 😊

First it's Dungeon Synth, now it's Winter Synth. How much farther can this man go into the depths??? You introduce me to so many interesting obscure topics every single time. One of my fav video creators on here.
@Pseudiom2 жыл бұрын
There's even more obscure subdivisions of Dungeon Synth like Barbarian Synth (Cinematic Score influence/Conan) and Monk Synth (Religious Themes/Chants), but those aren't as fully realized as Winter Synth. They are more like Cozy and Dino Synth being small branches of DS. They're also not fully accepted. Winter Synth was unique enough to sort of be its own thing, but tied together with Dungeon Synth. JessiEye on RYM has some pretty good lists about weird Dungeon Synth splinters.

@@Pseudiom Nice, you clearly have done a lot of research, I haven't watched the video quite yet but thanks for preparing me and keep up the great content!!
@retroroy87202 жыл бұрын
@@Pseudiom Comfy Synth is one of the more interesting branches of Dungeon Synth IMHO and it's basically become its own thing over time, which is interesting of itself but it has a clear point of origin with the Grandma's Cottage album. Dino Synth is cool but it's really just the stuff made by Diplodocus and maybe a couple of other acts.
@Pseudiom2 жыл бұрын
I assume Dino Synth is pretty limited in what can actually be done with it artistically. Cozy Synth I think is more flexible because its essentially inverted Dungeon Synth. There's an old joke Black Metal sounds good as Synthwave (there's a pretty good Synthwave cover of Jesus' Tod that I think proves it). So, I guess mathematically, Cozy Synth is Black Metal + Synth (Dungeon Synth) then inverted. I know people say that is is kitschy, but I think that's a result of the process. (Disclaimer: I don't know anything about actual music theory.)

These days, I appreciate that the artists get to decide under what genre/sub-genres their music falls, given that most of it is produced and released by them.

Since then, Aindulmedir has released his 3rd album, called 'Star Lore'. It's like Lunar Lexicon v2.0, indescribably beautiful and soothing.

Once again, another phenomenal video on Dungeon Synth and Winter Synth! I think the description of the difference between DS and WS that "Dungeon Synth portrays a scene or concept while Winter Synth portrays an open, minimal landscape" is absolutely perfect. I've never heard of such a good analogy before. One of my favorite WS albums is Hymner Från Snökulla by Örnatorpet. You mentioned this artists in the video but not this specific album. I really enjoy Hymner Från Snökulla because it is perfect WS through and through, and although it is WS, it is more optimistic WS. Instead of focusing on the gloom, cold, and isolation of winter, it portrays the sounds of a happy winter, of taking a walk through a snowy forest in the afternoon and stargazing in the cold. I thought it was interesting because it shows how versatile and diverse a microgenre like WS can be, and is. Overall, great video!

Merry Christmas too you too, George! I just read "A Visit from St. Nicholas" as everyone on my region is obligated to. I'm always passing my viewers like a ship in the night. I hope I'll actually be able to pay them back one day. I hope the upcoming last video of the year will be a good retrospective of where we came from and where we're going (in an musical, science fiction sort of way).

Hopefully its not too hot. The fantasy of snow is often better than actual snow, but I live in a place where I can enjoy both (and often regret both).

Nice brooding, wintry analysis! I was reflecting on the "non-gothic mysticism" characterization. Its funny because a huge part of classic gothic sensibility and literature is that kind of raw dwelling on landscapes, harsh nature, barren open spaces... Just look at the amount of detail Ann Radcliffe or even the Marquis de Sade spend on describing natural scenes. Very often you get this dichotomy between the enclosed castle/dungeon type space that is immensely claustrophobic and the wide-open but harsh natural setting out of doors. Its a tension that has been there since the beginning and they often work very well together to paint the "dark age" atmosphere you are describing...

You need to do one on black metal. Yes, full one with first and second wave, subgenres, notable local scenes (Finland, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Japan...) full fucking nine yards, running 3+ hours and/or in series. Let that fucking thing be your magnum opus. :*

No. KZbin filters comments without my permission. I have this video set to allow all comments and it still deletes ones without my permission. Did you put a link in it? It may have tripped the spam filter. People have already told me I pronounced it wrong. I'm just bad at it and I try to improve with Google Translate, but it never works well for improving my pronunciation. Thanks for letting me know though!

Not really, but, if you do want Christmas Music, I highly recommend Elyvilon's "Full Moon Over Yuletide Eve". It is Synth renditions of famous carols/tunes. I didn't really consider it Winter Synth, but I think its a great album.
