Camping is supposed to be fun and the 4x4 truck gives you an option to go off grid and enjoy more nature while your camper is like a home that gives u the opportunity to live like in a home while camping. I think you have the best and most affordable setup.The only other thing that can give u both is the benz van 4x4 but they're ridiculously expensive and they stopped making 4x4 vans,they only make Awd now which is ok but u can't beat a 4x4 off the trails. Enjoy it cathy

The truck camper is a great idea for getting out into more remote areas where you may not want to take the trailer. The portable firepit is a great idea. I've seen the patio ones, but not like the very compact one you have. The mountains were beautiful. I use the puck lights for camping too. So handy for tent or trailer. The hash with egg looked good. Enjoyed the video.

Hey Cat, Really enjoying the truck bed camping build out. Unfortunately, our truck bed isn't long enough to sleep in but we sure fill it up with gear. Just a suggestion on the lighting, if you need more, I would look for an inexpensive led light strip to run around the roof that runs off USB. It could give you different lighting options (colors/brightness/remote control, etc.) but also run off the Anker. You could also go with some rechargeable batteries for the pucks. Anyway, very envious of the location! ;) Best wishes!

Catherine, My previous setup was very similar to yours. I got battery operated fairy lights from amazon with a remote, and used bits of velcro to attach them to the outer edges of the ceiling. I also used a bigger velcro piece to attach the battery pack to the bedrug. It was magical and I loved it. Soft lighting made it so pleasant in there. Having the puck lights is great when you need more light. In my new setup with a taller shell, there is no bedrug and I miss the coziness of it.

@23:30 you can see the orange levelling block under the left rear tire, they are easy to drive off and forgot sometimes, solution: drill a hole in a corner and attach a length of fluorescent paracord to the block and the other end, put on a clip/carabiner and attach that to the camper shell somewhere, top rack, door handle etc...as a reminder it's there and not to drive off without them.

Your truck camping setup is evolving so nicely, Cat! I completely understand your desire to have both the trailer as your "home base" and your truck as a more mobile and trail-worthy exploration rig. I set up my 4Runner to be able to travel and comfortably stay in the backcountry. Many times we've started out on a day trip and ended up staying overnight in an epic spot we just didn't want to leave! What a blessing to be able to have the best of both worlds. Keep exploring and safe travels!

Wow, that's a great discount on the mattress. I totally understand your adventure. The challenges of working through being comfortable and safe in nature are not only empowering, but healing for the mind and soul. It can be addicting once you've experienced it. Kind of like going back to being a child exploring. It takes you back down to the basics of being human and being close to the universe and earth itself. It's a hard thing to convey to anyone who has not experienced it. I imagine it opens up all kinds of creativity since being out there cuts out all the noise of living in crowded cities.

Love it! I’m in full support of you dabbling with truck-only camping. It illustrates how RV/trailer camping is such massive overkill, and a huge distraction, on what one really needs to just get out and be close to nature. Trust your sleeping bag. Love the hash! I would add garlic…mmm. I’ve been poaching eggs in simmering beans from a can a lot lately…lots of variations. Don’t forget the onion and garlic. Oh also, I use the little peel-and-stick closet button lights in my rig. They are minimal, disposable, last forever, and are all you really need in a small space.

I do similar to you. I live in my camper but camp in my truck. It's just easier to travel and uses less gas. We have similar set ups. I don't use a cot because I want to sit all the way up on my bed and my dogs would crowd me off. I've had your little fire pit for a couple years. I enjoy it. Great for grilling or campfires and doesn't use a lot of wood. One of my hinges is getting stiff. When it breaks I will replace it with the same thing.

I’m digging the truck camping adventures Cat. Making the most of what you have to expand your outdoors experience is what it’s all about right? I think it’s also a great demonstration of how you can achieve your camping goals without investing a stupid amount of money in equipment. I’m sure some of the equipment you’d want to buy new, but a person could possibly pick up some of it secondhand and save a lot of money too. I wonder if you would be willing to do a video on setting up your camper shell step by step and the associated costs? And maybe things that came up you didn’t expect and how you solved the issue? Thanks and keep up the awesomeness Cat! 🙌🏻🙏🏻

I am sold on the Fish Lake Forest area. It is so diverse, I'll be spending my third summer there this year exploring more territory. Lots of camps there are closed in the winter months, something about that white stuff on the ground. Getting in and out of your truck bed you might want to check out a retractable bumper step. A little pricey but are heavy duty and will last the life of your truck. Happy Trails!!

I felt like I was there with you. Love what you have done with the camper shell. I fell in love with vans. I have a one ton ford E350 that I tow my trailers with. It works great and then when I want to van camp, it's a lot like what you are doing but much bigger and more comfy. Of course you have 4wd though so that's the advantage of a PU Truck with a shell. I see you got the smaller heater. I have that one and then I also have a Sport Cat which is even smaller. I use that one for tent camping when it's cold. Your videos never get old. Always something new.

Thank you for the time and effort you put into your videos, we love watching them! My wife and I car camp with a Kodiak canvas tent and use the little buddy heater, which you said got too hot. While we don't sleep with ours on, I thought I'd suggest that you can run it with just the pilot light, which actually does pretty well at providing some low heat. You might try that sometime. You could also try putting a closed cell foam Z-pad (like you sit on on the tailgate) inside the cot sleeve just for an extra layer of insulation against the cold that comes up under the cot. We love sleeping on our cots in our tent. I love the cot you purchased!
@penelopebartell840 Жыл бұрын
You might look into a rechargeable heated vest. I have one by Ororo and love it. Great for times when you're relatively static, such as at camp, and can't move enough to generate core heat. It makes me so much more comfortable. A drawback is that the battery pack, at least on mine from a few years ago, is fairly heavy and is in a side pocket rather than centrally positioned. A drawback with all the battery operated things, including the puck lights, is the batteries might not hold charges as well in cold temps.

In the winter you go to bed early and watch movies. Maybe someone on here knows of or can tell you how to make a bracket and mount it on your camper top to hold your laptop or whatever you watch movies on so you can snuggle in your bag and be warm and not have to hold your device or get a stuff neck turned sideways. The other option would be to put a removable seat with a back at the top of your bed so you can sit up with your legs in your sleeping bag, if you prefer to watch movies in a more upright position. When it's warmer it's not a problem but this is about cold winter camping. I just don't want you to get a back ache or a strained neck. I think you've got an awesome set up. I love how you've insulated all the windows and created security at the same time. No one knows how many people are in there. The lights on the ceiling rock. I have some that look like wall switches I use inside closets without power. I've seen a new product, a metal folding step that makes a set of stairs that you put on your tailgate. So you can walk up and get in if your are carrying an item or if you have dogs they can walk up/down the steps. They fold up quite flat. I'm concerned you might slip on the plastic step you use. I'm considering getting one for my truck.

Happy Sunday to you, Catherine! I love simple camping like this. One light I added to my van sliding door entrance on the roofline is an Aootek light with movement sensor capability. On two occasions while boondocking I had two uninvited guests, first a 400 pound black bear and then a skunk. The light alerts me to any movement outside my van. Also, while you step outside to do anything the light comes on and remains lit until you step back inside your vehicle. Just like your "puck" lights velcro will hold your light when mounted to your vehicle exterior. I mounted two on my roof rack to provide exterior lighting close to the van. Should I not want any outside lighting I just cover the sensors with a small strip of duck tape.
