Vitamin D Status in Hospitalized Patients With SARS-CoV-2 Infection
The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (Accepted, 27th October 2020)
academic.oup.com/jcem/advance...
To assess serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) levels in hospitalized patients with COVID-19
Analyze the possible influence of vitamin D status on disease severity
Retrospective
Case-control
216 COVID-19 patients
197 population-based controls
Results
Vitamin D deficiency was defined as serum 25OHD levels less than 20 ng/ml (50 nmol/L)
COVID patients group
Mean levels 13.8 ng/ml. (34.5 nmol/L)
82.2% vitamin D deficient
Community control group
Mean levels 20.9 ng/ml (52.25 nmol/L) (p less than 0.0001)
47.2% vitamin D deficient
Blood levels lower in men than in women
Evidence of protective role of Ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation in reducing COVID-19 deaths (Nature scientific reports, 19th October 2020)
www.nature.com/articles/s4159...
Ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation, mediated by vitamin D synthesis
Dataset of 152 countries over 108 days (n = 6,524)
A permanent unit increase in UVI is associated with a 1.2 percentage points decline in daily growth rates of cumulative COVID-19 deaths
and a 1.0 percentage points decline in the CFR daily growth rate
Globally
Minus 12% of cumulative COVID-19 deaths
Minus 38% on CFR
We find a significant negative association between UVI and COVID-19 deaths
indicating evidence of the protective role of UVB in mitigating COVID-19 deaths
If confirmed via clinical studies, then the possibility of mitigating COVID-19 deaths via sensible sunlight exposure or vitamin D intervention would be very attractive
Vitamin D sufficiency, a serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D at least 30 ng/mL reduced risk for adverse clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19 infection
journals.plos.org/plosone/art...
Association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and its effect on adverse clinical outcomes
n = 235
Results
Based on CDC criteria, among our study patients, 74% had severe COVID-19 infection and 32.8% were vitamin D sufficient.
Vitamin D sufficiency
25(OH)D less than 30 ng/ml. (75 nmol/L)
Reduction in clinical severity
Inpatient mortality
Serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP)
Increase in lymphocyte percentage
Vitamin D insufficiency in southern Arizona (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)
academic.oup.com/ajcn/article...
Population 26.1 ng/ml (65.25 nmol/L)
Below 20 ng/ml (50 nmol/L)
Blacks 55%
Hispanics 37.6%
Whites 22.7%
Also more obesity in first two groups
Adult Health Status Among Native American Families Participating in the Growing Resilience Home Garden Study (CDC August 22, 2019)
www.cdc.gov/pcd/issues/2019/1...
Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone tribes sharing the Wind River Indian Reservation (WRIR) in Wyoming reportedly die 30 years earlier than whites in the state
Nearly 80% of adults had deficient vitamin D levels ( less than 20 ng/mL; n = 167) (50 nmol/L)
Obesity
Waist circumference, associated with higher risk of obesity-related disease
Women 95%
Men 80%
Hypertension
Diabetes

My mum has just been in hospital - aged 82 and urine infection. When I spoke to the Nurse I asked what her Vitamin D level was and she said , oh it's fine. The way she said it made me feel they hadn't checked but I explained I had been watching you and that I would be keen for them to check. Lo and behold when Mum came home a week later the discharge sheet said low vitamin D. We are in Scotland - not much sun! They sent her home with Colecalciferol 25,ooo units , 2 to be taken once a week for 3 weeks before putting her on one a day from next week. Thank you John, I am absolutely sure me mentioning it meant they thought about it and did something about it. Email sent to my MP as you mention at the end of the video

Love your proactive action. The medical people have so much to remember it isn't surprising they forget things here and there. Sometimes, however, the things they forget are very important to get right. It is important for all of us to become proactive in our own and others care and bring their attention to things. If they aren't important then we can calm down. I just wish those in the medical field would stop being so thin-skinned when a question is asked. No-one is perfect. But in spite of the fact they may resent the questions...they shouldn't and we should always opt for knowing whether a thing is important or not as in your Mom's case by asking anyway.

I advise everyone to be your OWN advocate! Treatment now will be at its worst for many reasons....even the good docs wont have much time to be... a good doc. Even in good times western medicine is a crap shoot. dont know her history but i would say dont make your mum suffer... give her cranberry pills with plenty of water for that infection...works every time for me. Docs will needlessly torture her with caveman treatments for fun & profit. super plant Moringa has many vits including Vit D, however im sure there isnt enough for covid era but i would at least add it to the crappy synthetic store bought vits

I've been thinking the same, as have other viewers. No doubt Dr. Campbell has saved many, many lives worldwide. I've been watching since early on in this pandemic, before it was even a pandemic... I think I discovered him around early or mid January! Dr. Campbell is a wonderful teacher. I don't always agree 100% with a few opinions, yet his videos are top notch and he's an excellent teacher! His info, to present the essence of studies, is no doubt life saving and certainly has the conversation going so ideas at different levels of education can be shared, argued (& I mean this in the best of & most constructive ways), researched & ideas can be shared far and wide, along with potentially & very likely lifesaving information. If you find out what needs to be done to get him knighted, or Man of the Year or whatever, please post & Let's get it going! I'm in the US, so don't know if my input counts, but if it does, I'd like to support honors for him. He's been on nearly every day since January! Always has interesting & helpful information to present. Please DM me @SoCalBohoGal on Twitter if I can help! Let's get this going!

I tell you if ANYTHING even remotely good could come out of COVID, it is that this pandemic has finally spurred me to fix my possible co-morbidities, at least those I can fix which for me means losing weight, as I was severely obese. In the last 2 months I have lost nearly 40 lbs, reducing my BMI to 32 and still dropping, and I have been focusing on increasing my Vitamin D levels as quickly as I can, though I'm not 100% clear on how much vD I can take a day safely, so been sticking to 1k IU for now. I might increase that based on this video. I have to travel (fly) in 2 weeks so I've been doing EVERYTHING I can to reduce my risk profile before that.

I live in Sydney Australia and am a 66 year old male. About 10 years ago I received a doctor (who also practiced natural health approaches) gave me a cocktail of intravenous vitamins to assist my general health at that time. Additionally he gave me a Vitamin D in the buttocks. This was done at the beginning of our Autumn (March). After that I sailed through the winter season with no colds or infections whatsoever. I was truly amazed. The doctor commented that he found it more effective than flu vaccine. Every year since at the beginning of Autumn I take 10,000 i.u. daily for one month and then 5,000 i.u daily for the following seven months. I decided to take a four month break for four months (commencing November) as I would be naturally producing sufficient Vitamin D from sun exposure. This annual cycle I follow has kept me infection free. In the past few years I have made a modification to this protocol in that I take all the daily tablets once per week i.e. 35,000 i.u. every weekend as this is sufficient to to keep my levels topped up and is more convenient. With the present pandemic I will continue to supplement 5,000 i.u. daily (once per week) until the worldwide threat diminishes and then revert to the above protocol. Interestingly my dosage aligns closely with that of Doctor Fauci who I understand takes 6,000 i.u. per day. On a separate note, in 2016 my doctor prescribed a bone density scan and my results were 'óff the scale'. Better than a 18 year olds. There may be other factors but I attribute the results to my taking of the Vitamin D as well as magnesium supplementation which I have discovered is very important for bone health. Readers may also be interested in the following article which appeared today in the Australian Medical Association journal web site regarding Vitamin D injections. ama.com.au/media/vitamin-d-deficiency-fixed-shot Based on my experience I would recommend that anyone in pandemic hot zones and are not taking Vitamin D immediately consider getting an injection after consulting their doctor. The evidence is just too strong and the cost negligible.

I have very high vitamin D levels but...after a bone density scan a few years ago, I was told I had osteoporosis...I worked on more exercise to increase my bone density and on my last scan I mow have osteopenia...so there’s some improvement...but it’s not all down to vitamin D alone.

@wblekfb4ann8x5c1arha 3 жыл бұрын
@@jenniferbate9682 Hi Jennifer. I agree. As I mentioned I was also supplementing magnesium which is also very important for bone health and I attribute the bone density results to both Vitamin D and magnesium supplementation. Calcium is frequently prescribed for people with bone problems but all to often the problem is a lack of magnesium which goes unrecognised as it is counter intuitive. Because magnesium plays a critical role in the operation of the heart the body keeps the blood levels in a very tight range. People may be magnesium deficient but this does not show up in blood tests.

Social distance; no don't. Congregate, no don't. If he is taking vitamin D and C it's because the Trump team doctors have suggested that they work. There's countless billions in taxpayer's money from every government in the world waiting to drop on the first pharmaceutical company that comes up with a vaccine or any mitigating drugs. 2. Vitamin D is out of patent (as is Hydroxychloroquine) -both cheap as chips. Compare the new (patented) much trumpeted by the pharma companies but minimally effective Remdesivir: $1000 a dose. In the 20's, tickets was very common in the North, ESPECIALLY AMONG BLACK CHILDREN. U.S. gov't responded to the science, and all fresh and powdered milk and wheat flour was ORDERED to fortify those staple products with vitamins. The standard was set to be just enough to prevent rickets. My Mom, who got a degree in dietetics in '44, was sceptical of supplementation beyond what was (known to be) required to prevent a specific disease. Of course, what science DOESN'T YET KNOW at any given time does change the biology!

I am convinced that this is one of the reasons (not the only reason) why so many black people are dying of COVID-19 in western countries. It is well known that because of darker skin, black people's Vitamin D levels can be extremely low when living in the Northern hemisphere. If you look at the death rates on the African continent they are much lower than in western countries...in fact, in some Caribbean countries like St Lucia there has not been a single death from COVID-19.

Thank you for your effort to keep us updated. I just want to make a comment on the reference vitamin D values that are used in most articles, such as in "VITAMIN D STATUS IN HOSPITALIZED PATIENTS WITH SARS-CoV-2 INFECTION" . I was in charge of the RIA lab in Middelheim Hospital in Antwerp from 1973 till 1991 and in the '80s we also performed vitamin D analysis. In those days it was assumed that the sole role of vitamin D lay in calcium metabolism and therefore the cut-off value was 20 ng/ml. Less than 20 ng/ml being deficient. In those days we regularly received samples from care homes for the elderly and at least 2/3 of those samples were deficient. Since the turn of the century it became clear that almost all human cells express vitamin D receptors and hence are vitamin D dependant. This finding also implied that reference values should be adapted: cut-off should at least be 30 ng/ml and preferentially 45 ng/ml or more. This means that articles that only distinguish between less and more than 20 ng/ml will never be able to show the real benefit of sufficient vitamine D because a large part of what they call the normal (sufficient) population is in fact deficient. Due to the long period that the cut-off value of 20 ng/ml was used this will continue to be used, although I think such an error should not pass peer review.

Just after you presented the UVB radiation (sunshine) study, you comment that "It proves nothing because it’s a correlation causation study". Your point is well taken. In England, at the summer solstice in June, there is more than 16 hours per day of sunshine and less than 8 of darkness (at the winter solstice in December those numbers reverse). The study could equally well be reporting on the warmer weather's matching outdoor social interaction season vs the winter's virus sharing indoor (poorly ventilated) social interaction season. I see higher vitamin D levels matching with better resistance to, and survival from COVID-19, but not because of this report. Your other vitamin D observations offer a dramatically more useful collection of observations. Keep up the great work John! Thanks.

Thank you so much for this. I am disabled with severe M.E. and other things, so I barely ever get out in the sun. I have to literally ask my Dr for specific blood tests every year, and although I progressively get worse every year, the number of blood tests that I have keep reducing. I've been deficient in vit D twice in the past, but since then, several yrs ago, I have been taking my own D3 and Vit K on and off, at fairly high doses. Even at those higher doses, I still can't increase my levels to where I would like them. After doing a LOT of research at the time, I decided to base my levels according to the Vit D Council of America. In the UK, our recommended levels and treatment levels are laughable, on the NHS. The original prescription for D2 that my Dr gave me was absolutely miniscule!! When you first started your videos, I intended to watch a lot of them, but my M.E. poor concentration won't let me take it all in. I did however, watch this one, as at least I'm familiar with vit D. I just had to rewind it a few times and play bits again ....lol I wonder how may lives you've saved Dr Campbell!! 💗 Thank you for your straight talking, and very knowledgeable videos. 👏👏👏👏👏👏 AS HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE IS A COMORBIDITY FOR COVID-19, AND IT CAN BE LINKED TO VIT D, I WONDERED IF YOU WOULD CONSIDER DOING A VIDEO ON THE POSSIBLE LINK BETWEEN VIT D & HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE?
