In winter one can see the structure of the Bonsai trees much better than in summer. As such, it is a great time to prune and wire. In this video we go into the details of pruning deciduous bonsai in fall.

One day I will have a maple that needs this type of work, but until then I love watching you do it! Mine are very much in the grow and thicken stage. This is a lovely tree.

Well.. some trees just need to be purchased. Arakawa take such a long time to bark up.. I have been looking for decent ones for near a decade (During which time a young one would have started to bark up, sigh)

As I understand your thought, I still would have taken that thick branch/trunk off, I think it would improve the look of the tree... Happy Holidays!

Tricky one indeed. Buuut.. I am not sure yet. It is an old tree, and I would hate to make big cuts.

In honesty.. I am working my way into Azaleas. I have regular small-flower hardy azaleas now for a ong time, but the Satsukis only for my second winter. So do not feel I should comment just yet!

Jelle. This might be the best video i've ever seen on describing the pruning process on a maple. so many others just prune away without deceiving why they are doing it. I've just purchased and Arakawa and I'm wondering if you'll give me some tips on how to get started. Can I show you some pics of what i'm starting with?

Ohw, thank you so much!If you pop the tree agains a neutral background and turing it through 360 degrees in a video on your channel, be happy to take a look.

Love the thinking out loud how to prune/balance the tree. For winter prep, i am putting all the smaller trees that lost their leaves together in a sheltered spot. So to minimize damage.

I would do exactly what you are advising if I had such a tree as that one. To remove that side branch would not take it that much further forward and would be a nightmare for wound healing. Greatt content. Cheers

Happy new year! What about a small changing of the front face? On the video it seems that a slightly turn to the right will help to hide the big right branche (pointing more to the back of the tree). The nebari seems still good.... Maybe an other option? ;)

Great Arakawa, I’ve got a dozen in the ground developing, I hope a couple turn out half that nice. Good point on that big first branch, I’ll keep an eye on mine as they develop to prevent that in the future. I know you want that first branch to stay but an air layer of it might shorten it and enable some taper to be grown into it,I know it’s a long term approach but could be an option for ya!
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai 8 ай бұрын
Thanks a lot. Will look into that option.

The arakawa is looking great, Jelle. It's.got wonderful cork bark all over the tree. How old do you think it is? Is this the same tree which dried out and was in quite poor health? To be honest I'd be tempted to remove that large first right branch. I know what you say about a wound but you could thread graft some smaller branches and the wound would cork over given time anyway. Merry Christmas to your and your family mate

What I understand it is 40 something years. Which is one of the reasons why I am hesitant making drastic changes. I first will try my route. Cutting is still an option in a few years..

Hi incredibile video! What is the best time to wire Japanese maple and what time should be avoided?
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai 19 күн бұрын
Around leaf drop is really good, or in the growing season. Typically once trees are frozen is bad to wire.

My wife bought me one thoze tic tok greenhouses on cyber monday for Christmas. I put it together and is very nice. I have all my trees in it. The plastic doesnt seem to be that good, i will replace it with some kind of chicken wire in spring

I am wary of light greenhouses. They heat up fast, and wind and snow can damage these badly.
