@@InventorZahran They can be made to be serviceable, with far more effort than any other method. That doesn't make them great.
@bennyboiii119622 күн бұрын
@@jonp8015 Vastly untrue. They are statistically the best at getting large amounts of people from point A to point B. Better than cars, better than planes, better than boats. Do your research. The problem with cars is the role they play within infrastructure. In transport, there's a fine balance between capacity, frequency, proximity and speed and timing reliability. Trains are very good at capacity, speed and timing. But modes of transport have places where they work, and places where they don't. Trains are very good at Intercity and large intra-city. This is because huge amounts of people require a commute between point A and B at high speeds, but are willing to plan around pickup and drop-off times as long as they are consistent. Inside the city, trams and subways are used at a higher frequency because more people might spontaneously need a faster mode of transport. Cars are very good at being there when you need them. But they have a capacity bottleneck and reliability issue. And it doesn't get solved by just adding more lanes, because then you just have bottlenecks at lights and near popular exits. Your roads are only as efficient as their LOWEST capacity, unlike trains, which scale capacity with vehicle size, rather than requiring an entire redesign of a road system to function more efficiently. Then you have bikes, which are HIGHER capacity than cars (because they are smaller) and while they are not as fast, they can be packed. This gives them a huge advantage in PROXIMITY. You can take bikes where cars can't go. This makes them especially useful in LOCAL settings, like from a train station to your destination. Cars don't fit in this mold. And that's because they are a jack of all trades, master of none. They try to fill every niche, but in doing so sacrifice in all areas. And people are PROVABLY worse off for it. They are more polluting, more dangerous, require more maintenance and construction effort, are more expensive (both for you and for the government), you risk arriving late or early due to unavoidable traffic circumstances, and they require massive amounts of unsustainable supporting infrastructure, which are terribly suited to certain geographies, like Spain, for example. Buses are NOT high capacity. The increase is marginal compared to trains. Hell, I've seen Plus 15 systems more efficient than bus networks. And those are just glorified pedestrian bridges. FSD won't change anything in a capitalist system. In order to get cars to be efficient, you basically need them all to sync up in some way. This would require massive datacenters controlling tons of cars, and they would have to be unified in some way, meaning that there would need to be an open protocol for inter-car communication, where all data is accessible to EVERY company with an FSD system, and where all FSD systems are basically the same. Call me crazy, but I don't think Mr. Musk is exactly keen on opening up his FSD software. And even then, not all cars are equipped with FSD and they won't be for a while. I just don't want to pay massive insurance and gas/electricity bills for the rest of my life man, FSD car or not.

Big Thumbs up for eliminating the shaker, it went in the same direction like the rythm function of the MMX as in bloating the definition of the machine from "plays music with marbles" to "plays music with marbles, among other things" and all engineering-timing issues aside felt like a slippery slope. Looking forward to further progress now! Edit: Just thought about it a bit more and stuff like the shaker or the rythm machine would potentially make sense as "addon" instruments that you could maybe plug onto a timing output of the machine to synchronize them, but essentially be individual instruments controlled by your band mates.
@Shilorius21 күн бұрын
...or a completely different self playing music instrument. The only thing the marble machine needs on top, is some kind of output device or shaft to sync up the music of it with other self playing music instrumens Martin might build in the future. Imho, that way he can focus on the marble machine for now.. and if he gets it done, he can still follow his passion and build (and add self playing) instruments.
@djgummikuh889521 күн бұрын
full ack, I definitely concur that these secondary instruments are addons and not relevant to the machine itself, I just wanted to sketch the idea of a compromise between having a pure-marble driven art pieca and the potential necessity of in-time percussion or similar in a modular fashion

I have been watching your videos for years ever since the first marble machine. I have truly enjoyed your self-taught engineering based on experience. However, and I did write a comment on this back during your time in France (I think you called that Marble Machine X) that somewhere through the process you lost track of what made the first marble machine so amazing. The first one looked like it had been thrown together by a madman with bits and pieces lying around. It was wobbling, vibrating, looked very hard to operate and I am sure there were many marbles going flying off wherever they shouldn't - but none of that mattered - it was a truly magnificent machine and one amazing achievement. Your new idea sounds much much closer to the original and _that_ is fantastic! While from an engineering perspective, millisecond precision might be cool - well - a bloody electronic sequencer can do that with no problem at all. Having a wobbly pile of wooden sticks produce anything resembling music - well - that's the key. Exciting. Put the sheer madness back into the machine. As for material might I suggest only wood recovered from old Euro-pallets ;)

I admire your tenacity to stick with it, and I’ve loved your music pretty much since the start. I look forward to the next album and hope to get to see you play live some day 😊 But..man, you go hot and cold like the wind and contradict your sentiments at multiple levels, going around and around in circles on individual parts, the project and its philosophies, and relative importance. If this is breaking out of that spiral and actually going to result in a build, that’s awesome, otherwise I’d take a break from it and focus on your music until the timing (pun intended!) is right. Hope you and yours have an awesome 2024 holiday season 😊☃️🎁

Being against self-driving cars is not being "for the status quo". Self driving cars are one solution (or even part of a solution) to a very complex problem of getting people from point A to point B. Individual cars, moving individual people is a very inefficient system. Even if the technology worked perfectly there are social and ecological problems with cars that might cause some to oppose this shift toward leaning into cars as a solution. The money and effort put into trying to make self-driving cars work is so much larger and with more backing than other transportation solutions. Not to say that self-driving cars can't be part of the solution, but often this "black and white" mindset of "if you're not with us, you're against us" ultimately hurts the landscape of transportation technology in the US (maybe worldwide). I will admit, the progress we've made is impressive, and it is likely safer than human drivers, but so are trains and busses and any number of other solutions.

Self-driving cars is like the overly complicated designs you've discarded for your machine. It's far more difficult and ultimately less effective than the time-tested and simpler solution of restoring our abandoned rail systems.
@mikeciul859922 күн бұрын
We already have the solution and we've had it for over a hundred years: design cities around people, not cars. Provide public transportation infrastructure for all. It took an enormous PR effort to make Americans "love their cars so much." We can turn it around.

Very satisfying hearing you finally talking like an engineer and talking about a final product and all of the factors that will affect it while you're still designing it. Don't fall into the trap of getting discouraged if this design isn't perfect - it won't be. But, with this approach you're going to be a lot closer to the final form in the first attempt. Good luck!
@hunterra21721 күн бұрын
I think your opinion on self driving does kind of reflect your perspective on a lot of things, including this project. The answer to distracted driving is public transportation, or better driving education, or a whole host of other things. Self driving already has lead to more deaths, with Teslas being the single most accident prone vehicle currently produced, and autonomous vehicles being at least twice as likely to be involved in an accident per capita than normal cars. The solutions you look for are ones which sound cool and interesting, instead of functional and pragmatic. I think it's important to constantly be challenging your own perspectives and being willing to accept the simpler, more elegant ones BEFORE the wild unique ones which WILL cause more headaches in the short and long term. It's maybe not as deep as that, but I feel like in a video where you discuss your willingness to dramatically restructure your learned behaviors, it's emblematic of a flaw you have, which is that you are driven by short term, fun and interesting ideas, and those capture you in a way that dedicated, process driven implementation clearly does not, at least not long term. I have been watching you since the very beginning of the MMX, and watched as you've done, undone, and redone every aspect of this project a dozen times, always looking for new, unique ways of doing things, like making your own bearings, or adding unnecessary steps during a design phase. Or even the very nature of your design requirements, seemingly changing with every upload, from creative and beautiful to functional and pragmatic from one iteration to the next. Every time you hunker down and do some good, process driven development, a few months go by and suddenly it's all scrapped in favor of the newest, most unique way you have seen to get something done. Don't let me be completely negative, I absolutely love watching this journey, and I love watching the amazing novel solutions to novel problems, and all the ways you and the community come together to try to make this dream happen. Sometimes, I just feel that the fundamental driver for this project isn't necessarily a dream to have a machine or an instrument, but to create some marvel of humanity. What you said about how the original felt scrappy, and just an act of pure creation was the truth, you seem maybe lost in the weeds of theoretics, with this vision of an impossible machine. I just wish the ideas that cling to you were the ones that allow for the machine to be made, not the ones that allow it to be the most interesting. I am not, by any means, a Martin hater, I think you have done and continue to do amazing, fascinating work, that has absolutely shaped my own creativity. It's just, I was practically a child when the marble machine was first built and I first was amazed by it, like you were for animusic, and now am a grown man, and to watch you struggle with the same cycle all these years lsyrt... I just want to see a future for this machine, not a future for these videos. I revel in the thought that this channel could some day post only music. I love you Martin

He might be able to get away with it as long as he limits the "plywood gears" to just the large ring gear, similar to the MMX. I don't recall the MMX having backlash issues. Also, he should probably bring spare parts of all the plywood parts with him on tour.
