Yeah, I've been reading his book. They were incredibly insightful. He probably sees that Xi is "overstepping" their long term plan -- to be fair, they have been surreptitiously weakening the US as outlined in "Unrestricted War" and he probably believes it would have been inevitable without Xi becoming hasty and threatening outright kinetic war (the whole book was about fighting against a superior technological opponent by expanding the "concept of war" to include everything from media, political slander of leadership, economic and educational control, etc).

Perhaps, but as already remarked on it depends on how popular and how much support they have within the PLA. Should they disappear for voicing rather obvious sensible concerns while being both popular and having a large support, especially among the ordinary soldiers, this could be far more harmful to Xi than doing nothing. It might effectively turn the PLA against him, making a coup a very real possibility for someone. So the question is not only are they popular enough to be safe, but how astute a political player is Xi? I assume the first is the case or they probably wouldn't have made those statements, so it really is more about the second.

And as much as people think Russia will partner with China if it came to war I really don't think Russia is in any better of a position at the moment to actually do that, and they have seen what happens when the rest of the world joins together and comes for a common enemy. I see Putin either remaining neutral or actively joining in putting China down in order to ensure global stability and sovereignty. China wants to own every country eventually, I doubt Russia will pass an opportunity to put down their southern rival before they can become a much larger threat.
