The USA learns nothing from it's mistakes. 1973-74 the first oil embargo taught our leaders nothing about planning ahead for "what if" a country we rely on for critical resources stops supplying us with that resource. We still rely on oil from the middle east even though we pump enough from the ground in our own country needs, it hasn't stopped the oil and gas industry from gouging everyone with inflated prices. Our leaders have known for 20 years or more that rare earth metals need to be sourced in friendly to the West countries or developed at home. Now we are facing the loss on the only source of highend computer CPU's in the world(Taiwan). Our elected leaders and news services divide us by reporting on the abortions issue, gun control and who is an American. A country that considers itself a world power needs in my opinion to be able to feed itself, Supply the raw materials it needs to build it's cities and have the energy to run it's industry. I don't see our elected leaders doing that.

Cannot wait for US to investigate their own weapons manufacture industry. US employee's immigrants from abroad to manufacture parts here in US & pays them trash. Lol, US even has compliance officers who turn a blind eye at tons of illegal activities to "complete the mission," viewing the calculated risk as no threat. Oh, you a non-doc worker? We need labor!? Here is a grinding wheel and 11 dollars. Can you grind metal off these components? What's it for? Just a pump, (for the Abrhams tank...) Time to pay the piper for complacency. US handed over the knowledge of our tech a long time ago. Now, we have reached the resource war. I love USA but the consequences of lax security has not shown its true nasty face yet. I hope we got an Ace up our sleeve.

I believe the US & Japan produced magnets from rare earths way back in the 1980s. Sumitomo of Japan and the Magnequench division of General Motors. Magnequench was probably purchased and moved to China. Not sure about Sumitomo.

There is absolutely nothing secret about the alloy or the process of making it into a magnet. If the DOD did not already have a supplier, they could find one in an hour or two. Some of the most sophisticated and specialized metallurgy companies in the world are in the USA. Their normal business is to design custom alloys for industry. Having the DOD hand them the formula and process makes it a piece of cake. These companies usually develop the process then license it to someone else. Usually someone Chinese this decade... but it's not like they forget how it's done.

It’s not a ban. It’s in reality a Chinese sanction over USA. USA really does not have a choice. Ban is just politics for local domestic audiences.

All modern aircraft have computers. And it isn’t a part from China it’s an alloy used to make the part. This story doesn’t even make sense.
