I have the new one. This is an engineering problem I.M.H.O. Rear battery in: Wobble. Rear battery out: None or significantly less wobble. It appears that the location of the rack, high center of gravity, and heavy weight of the rear battery is causing a harmonic wave through the frame and connectors under certain conditions. Once side movement is introduced by tapping the handles, It produces a large, sympathetic moment at the end of a long lever. This movement over time is probably gong to get worse as multiple connectors start wearing in. Imagine this occurring at 40+ MPH. Motorcycles use steering dampers to reduce similar results. The factory better jump on this A.S.A.P. before someone gets hurt. Maybe a recall. Given the volume of bikes out there, It's not going to go away. Just my opinion. I'm not an engineer. You can come to your own conclusions.

I have a version 1 with the single battery and to reduce the wallow seen due to flexing of the pivots I took two measures. One (lacking a tig welder) i took a piece of 2" square aluminum box tubing and carefully contoured to fit between the rockers (in the area behind the seat tube as this is where all the movement force is being imparted by the suspension members) and around the seat tube and epoxied it between the pivots. I also found that the bolt (actually what is called a barrel bolt) that mounted the rockers to the frame was loose in the frame bracket so I wrapped the bolt in brass shim stock where it goes through the frame to eliminate movement. These two repairs totally eliminated the flexion and wallow that plagued the bike prior to installing a rear mounted battery which turned it into a full on death wobble. I contacted Wired about 6 months ago and made them aware of the issue and suggested they have the factory simply weld the two rockers together with two pieces of aluminum leaving the front area open to allow for easy installation on the bike during assembly. Then to fully address the movement at the bolt I told them they could either use a bigger barrel bolt that fits the frame bracket tightly or better yet machine a 45° angle on the face of each bearing as well as an opposing 45° angle on the end of the frame bracket much like a valve and valve seat to 100% lock the bearings to the frame. Wired did not do the rocker mod instead adopting bolted in spacers as many owners had done as a great half measure to reduce flexion without a welder or the ability/time and effort to machine aluminum box tubing as I did.....The spacers were a great idea as an easy home fix but pathetic as an assembly line repair. I also see a major class action law suit in Wired future if they do not mend their ways.

I got mine Friday and have 120 miles on the bike. I highly recommend everyone tighten down every bolt. I had a really loose bolt in the rear pivot point by the axle on one side. I also lubricated all the suspension linkages and eliminated all the squeaks and rattles EXCEPT the rear battery where there’s just a little play in the carrier. I’ll have to wedge something between the rack and battery so it won’t move. I saw this video this morning and went to check out this wobble, which is definitely present. I have two other fat tire bikes that are solid in comparison. I’m looking very closely where it’s coming from. I don’t believe it’s from the rear suspension setup - I’m not seeing any lateral play there. The rear battery does accentuate it but that’s not the origin. I think it is coming from the front - either the fork, stem or just play in the big spoked wheel and tire themselves. I ordered a 2mm stem spacer like another poster mentioned to see if that removes any slop.

In my humble opinion, that shake demonstrated at 8:00 in the video is a direct result of inferior, loose, or poor construction of the four-point structure that connects the rear wheel, frame, and shock together. It's either loose, or bending and oscillating. Look carefully and you can see the entire frame bending and flexing right under the seat post. They need to stiffen those members up substantially.

I'm a retired front end mechanic on trucks and cars. The issue is the caster angle, which is too small. So what the company wants owners to do is tighten the pinch bolts to make the fork stem have more resistance to turning. This will help a little, and along with the lower tire pressure which also adds resistance to the swivel of the fork stem. The idea is if you welded the front fork stem solid to the frame, the problem will go away so they are telling you to do everything in that direction, regardless if it severley hampers the ability to turn the front forks. . And the things you pointed out about the rear battery weight slightly over hanging the back end of the rack also adds to the problem by making the front end slightly lighter. This wobble is caused by the technical term, Western Flyer Wagon Wobble. That's because the old kids wagons had no front end caster and would have very little stability at higher speeds when going down hill. The caster is the tilt backwards of the steering angle. Back in the old days when high speed dragsters were just beginning to be at the drag strips, there were a lot of problems controlling the steering on them, especially on take off when the front ends were weightless. They quickly learned that the caster angle had to be increased to almost 20 degrees or they would have no control of the steering and often get the death front end wobble, which transmits through the entire chassis. Same goes for all bikes. The faster they go, the more fork caster us required. If these bikes had the correct caster, the pinch pin bolts could be loose and the tire pressure maxed out and there would be no wobble. The company just doesn't want to admit that the angle is wrong now because it would cost them a small fortune to have all the ebikes they sold fixed by a place that could alter the angle. It would require cutting the fork frame down tube free at the bottom and pushing the lower end forward to an amount that is experimental at the start, until the best angel is found on a prototype bike. The space between the lower part of the down tube and the existing frame would have to be filled and rewelded by a skillful welder that knew how to preheat the area of the weld then properly stress relieve the welded area. The frame would have to be completely striped down of all components prior to this work. It's not all that difficult for an experienced aluminum welder, just time consuming. And one final thing. You mentioned that owners of this bike all need to get together and make them fixs this problem. Not going to happen. The way to get there attention is for people to stop buying these ebike models altogether is the only way they will fix it for future customers. All current owners are up the proverbial creek in a Wired canoe.

@ginginthing

@@TunaSoda I don't know. I don't own either one. Without any way to measure it, it does look like the angle is close. It's not off that far. But it doesn't take only a degree or two on the off side to cause a problem. The wide tires also contribute a small amount to the problem. That's why dragsters and funny cars have narrow front wheels and tires.

@@StayConnectedEV These current ebike frames were all designed for max speeds of about 25 mph, and at those speeds, there was not a problem. But now these bikes are reaching cruise speeds well above that, which is well out of the original design envelope. I'm not an expert on production costs or redesign costs for China, but it has to be significant to come up with a prototype that will work at these higher speeds and then change the tooling to accommodate any changes. But the biggest costs might be having all the frames out there now that don't work with the higher speeds. If they tell the people that purchased them to kiss off, they will get a bad name and loose business. If they tell people they will send them a new frame, that will cost them a lot of money. So right now, I don't envy their situation. They only have one option now, and that's to tell people to do things to try and prevent the high speed wobble by using methods that also degrade the low speed agility of the movement of the front forks, There's actually a much cheaper fix to the problem that can be used now which is not pretty but effective. It's been used on aircraft front nose gears for over 75 years and that is a shimmy dampener. Yes, this same problem has been around a long time and still exists on small aircraft.
@ginginthing
@ginginthing 5 ай бұрын
@@golden6625 Good example. Another example would be the tail wheel on a conventional gear airplane, although the casters on a shopping cart and trail dragger airplane is an example of the most common lag caster, where the wheel is behind the vertical pivot axle on a caster. It's much different then a bike's front fork forward caster wheel which is more difficult to stabilize. The bike's rear wheel that is mounted to drag links that are attached rigidly to the frame, or to a horizontal pivot axle in a rear suspension bike is not a caster wheel system. In that location, wobble can not be induced because there is no rotational freedom about the vertical axis in that system. There can be vibration from an unbalance rear wheel, but no wobble. Except for the balance of the spinning wheel, that system is inherently stable. But in the situation of the front wheel, forward leading caster angle if the vertical pivot axle is not in a rearward leaning angle, or if it approaches zero angle from vertical, instability of the system will occur at some point. This is primarily due to the gyroscopic precession of the spinning wheel at different speeds, downward pressure on the system and several other factors. We might tend to take the mechanics of a bicycle for granted, and assume it's just a simple device since it doesn't look that complicated, and it has been around forever, it actually is an example of many principles of physics all coming together in one package that is an incredible and very useful invention, that probably took many years by many people to develop by trial and error without any schooling in math or physics. This is the kind of people that Elon Musk looks for to work for him, and not always impressive engineering degrees that say nothing of the person's ability to invent new workable and efficient systems.

I tried the wiggle test no handed and the front wheel did oscillate a little, but nothing wild. As soon as I touched the bar it stopped. With my hands on the bars (one hand or two) I have had zero stability issues or even a hint of any wiggle, let alone a DEATH wobble. I've cruised road, concrete, gravel, & sand up to 43MPH. Nothing. I had to hear about a problem to know there was a problem, because I have no problem. I've ran the tires at 15, 20, 25psi. Sorry this is unpopular, but I like the bike, it's fast AF. What I would say is having the rear battery option is nice for long range, but I've found it performs better just using the front battery for riding that doesn't require all that range. I mean that extra weight up high is gonna effect your center of gravity. The bike is way more nimble without it racked.

I tend to agree. With the added weight over the rear tire, along with a rear suspension design that may not be rigid and solid enough to fight lateral movements may contribute to this wobble. So you have the front half of the frame that is rigid, the rear half of the frame that is rigid, but both halves are connected by a weak link, which is the suspension apparatus right in the middle. This, combined with the lop sided weight with battery all the way in the back of the bike could cause flex issues.

10lbs over a rear tire is not going to cause any bike to wobble. Otherwise, every single bike with a back rack and a basic bag would wobble. Too much weight weight causes tipping due to raising the center over gravity of the vehicle, not wobbling. Again, especially not 10lbs. As to @StayConnectedEV theory of too much weight at the top of the rear suspension. The bulk of the weight on that rack is focused on the axle of the rear wheel. Look at the structure of it. Those little bars on the front of the rack are for balance. You would need a whole lot of weight and lever to add any significant compression or tension on those. Even then, it isn't going to cause a wobble. As a kid, did you ever ride around on the rear pegs of a friends bike or vise versa? When was there an issue? The passenger leaned to much and the bike wanted to go over. There was never a wobble in the bikes.

Another thing to look for. If your rear suspension arms, the two black ones that connect to the shock, have an unused hole, you need to contact the company and get that additional bolt/spacer setup that goes there. It will add rigidity to the bike. I made my own at first using two 5/16 x 1-inch spacers, an 8mm x 85mm bolt, two washers, and a nylon lock nut. That got me by until I got the real parts from Wired. I could only find a 90mm long bolt, so it stuck out more than I would have liked, but it worked. Now, I did the handlebar wiggle on a Radster Road which has no rear suspension. I could see and feel the same wobble, but much less. So, all bikes with substantial weight in the rear will flex when you do this test. The motor and rack are fairly heavy, so there is inertia there to make the wobble more noticeable during the test. Now that I added the missing bolt/spacer, the bike feels much better. The only time I ever got wobble while riding was before I did this, and when going 2 or 3 mph, steering quickly back and forth, while attempting to go between my car and my trailer. Narrow, so I needed slow precise handling. With the added weight in my rear rack bag, that made it worse. Since adding the missing bolt, all is pretty darn good. To do your own test, get a bike with no suspension, put about 5 to 10 pounds in its rear rack bag, and wiggle the handlebars. You will get some flex. A lot of it could be the tires as well, as they flex side to side too, especially with lower air pressures.

I did however go with the 5 Star as my replacement bike as I was very nervous this issue would somehow persist on the new Freedom models. Definitely do not have this issue on my 5 Star and trust me I’ve tried to make it happen, many different speeds and riding aggressively to make sure. Not sure what exactly is done different on the 5 Star but the thing is solid as a tank with 0 frame flex. So glad I went with Ecells this time. I’m not a brand loyalist, love both bikes but the fact is the Wired bikes have too much flex/play in their chassis. I will add that putting a front saddle bag with tools and a pump on my Wired Cruiser did help resolve the wobble at speed issue after tightening the stem, wheel etc. The weight balance is part of the problem on that bike. You still can’t transition side to side too aggressively or the frame flexes a lot and the rear end starts to battle you for balance.

FYI, I'm a 5'9' 215 lb. rider for weight reference. I've ridden with 2 separate batteries strapped to the rear rack (not at the same time). 1 battery was a 60v 40 ah UPP and that definitley made the handle bars wobble. The second battery was a shark style 60 v 20 ah battery pack and that even makes the handle bars wobble. Granted, I understand the handle bars wobble because of the weight distribution, but I was suprised to find the wobble even with the additional 20 ah pack on the rear rack. Also, when I ride with just the default battery in the frame there is no wobble what so ever, but when I get the wobble it happens immediately. I have 2 bikes with similar linkage systems. 1 is the Wired Freedom and the other is a Wallke X3 Pro. I tested the linkage frame flex when standing next to the bikes jiggling the handle bars and the Wired Freedom flexes so much more than the Wallke.

My 2024a Freedom needed its front fork stem tightened. You loosen the two stem bolts, tighten the cap bolt that goes down the middle of the fork, until no slop is felt. The way you feel for slop is... hold your hand around the front of the frame and the fork tube where it comes out of the top of the frame. Overlapping both with your hand. With the other hand, hold the front brake and wiggle bike back and forth. If it is loose, you will feel the clunking in your hand that is on the frame/fork tube. Pay attention to only what you feel with your hand at that area, as the front fork may make a similar movement where the fork slider goes down into the lower leg of the fork. Now, what I did was add another 2mm fork stem spacer ring to the two rings that come on the bike. I put it in between the two spacers that come on the bike. I did this to ensure the fork stem cap was not hitting the top of the fork stem before the fork bearings were tight with no clunking. Check this, because if the cap hits the top of the fork stem before the bearings are tight enough, tightening that middle stem bolt will not do anything because the cap is already hitting the fork stem. I wanted to be sure it was not, and that I could get the proper adjustment.

I have two Wired bikes, the 23 Freedom and 24+ Freedom that I just picked up from Chicago warehouse last week Friday. Neither of them have any sort of wobble. I have had only positive interactions with the Wired owners. They have called me with answers to my questions very quickly sometimes even after normal work hours. I’m very pleased with their help. As to the wobble, like I said both the 23 and 24+ bikes are solid, despite the rear suspension being vastly different there is no difference with the bikes stability. The second video where the bike was shaken to show the wobble I have two comments - 1) the rattle you hear is the rear battery which has a small amount of movement causing it to hit the side of the rack. I have that issue also which I’ve temporarily solved with a small piece styrofoam inserted between the battery and frame. I’ll silence it permanently with Velcro when I get a chance. 2) I took a short video trying the shake test like your second video by shaking both the 23 and 24+ bikes. The video shows no difference between the two bikes, both are solid. It’s almost like the bike in your video has suspension screws that are loose and need tightening. What seems odd to me is that for the longest time people have been complaining that Wired COPIED Ecells bike, that the frames were identical… now somehow they are no longer identical but rather Ecells is soooo much better. Obviously the two firms are competing for the same customers but either the bike frames are the same, as originally claimed by Ecells OR they are totally different- it can’t be both. Competition is a good thing, we as consumers benefit. I’d prefer both firms spend their time and resources building better and better products and not tearing down their competition.

Really? Have you actually purchased a bike direct or only from a bike shop? Packed, shipped across the Pacific and trucked across the USA there are bound to be things that come loose and need to be tightened up or corrected locally… buy from a bike shop and they do that for you, buy direct and you need to do it. Read the comments on various posts, they run hot and cold with many comments complaining that Wired simply copied Ecells frame/bike. Wired implies that Ecells copied them as well- look at the top of their website - Imitated by one. Rivaled by none. Ecells seems to be more aggressive in the comments area but that could be my impression since I’m in Wired groups and not in Ecells.

It’s a combination of putting too much weight too far away from the central mass and not having a strong and solid enough interface between the and seatstay and chainstay to the rest of the frame. I’m no engineer, but this is a problem that is fundamental to the design of the frame. It cannot be fixed by tightening anything. I’d look elsewhere. And even forgo this style of frame altogether.

All i see in those videos is someone who bought a direct-to-consumer bicycle and didn't properly go through and check all assembly. Shake the bike and it rattles!!! There's something loose. Minor play (millimeters) in suspension will magnify and create issues like the wobble, or worse. But if you bought a bike in a box from China, and don't know how to service it, or ensure it is put together properly, shame on you. My recommendation if you are looking for that type of service it to buy a bike from a local shop that will hold your hand when your brakes squeal and they'll fix it. they can fix your flat, adjust your derailleur, setup your suspension for your weight and riding style/preference. Heck you can even have them put it together or give it a once over if you did it (maybe they will... Ask before you take it in there haha). But the clanking noise in the video when shaking the bike not moving says something's loose. That should be fixed first... Then show me again. Not all wobbles can be fixed for a specific rider & bike. I've owned more than one bike that wobbled for me and not my buddy when he rides it. Weight distribution & physics. The bike might not be right for everyone based on those factors.

That's not a product defect! That was a product misalignment. I videoed it, they worked on the bike. They replaced the bike ... Weight distribution & physics ... Not a critical design flaw... Unless it happens to everyone. Not to say that anyone who experiences that wobble when RIDING the bike (not inducing the wobble) should just live with it. Like I said I returned my Vado - a $4k bike shouldn't do that! And agreed, a$2k bike shouldn't either. So I go back to... Is the bike properly assembled? If it is rattling when you shake it... Something is loose. Fix that first and come talk to me.... Might STILL be an issue... Return the bike. Expectations are a bit too high I think on DTC products & customer service ... It's not like buying something from Apple. Btw, my 80s Raleigh Technium 440 had a wicked wobble too at high speed ... Not a defective product.

The rear battery on the Wired Freedom weighs close to 15 lbs. It is the only cause of the wobble. Solution: take off the battery if you want to ride with your hands off the handlebars.
