Been using that swing head jig paired with a Berkley Havoc Pit Boss here in Iowa this past month with so much success I haven't used a single other lure at all.

Excellent video! Great point on how the current effects the Carolina rig and rocks on the football exposed eye. Lost a lot of those power jig heads like on foxee minnows because the eye is at the point of the head. Those conditions Davy was fishing are similar to my favorite shore fishing spot on Onieda Lake, rock, current parallels the shoreline because of river outlet, and an onshore wind are just the ticket. in May/June walleye, smallies, and sheepshead are caught. Those sheepshead are nothing to sneeze at, on the end of your line or the end of a fork they're great. Excellent for poor man's shrimp or smoked, too bad they're almost all head. Thanks Davy & W2F, I'm trying that swing head and craw bait for sure, very smart video!

Great feedback Joe. We're happy to hear that some of the analytical stuff is resonating. We agree on the sheepshead, pretty much a freshwater permit and top notch in terms of fighting ability. People often get locked into only eating certain kinds of fish, but I've eaten sheepshead out of Minnesota lakes and been pleasantly surprised by a flesh that rivals walleye. FIRM, WHITE, FLAKY. Good luck and let us know how the setup produces for you.

Is a Drum/sheephead considered a trash fish? Up in the PNW we got Squaw fish that are known for eating salmon smolt so when caught we usually take a knife to them and feed the crawdads. Same thing with drum or are they good for something in a bass fishery??
@Wired2Fish7 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, we consider all native fish to be an important part of the fishery and ecosystem as a whole. Drum are native fish to this portion of the Mississippi River, and evolved to coexist with the other fish species, to include the bass. I've personally eaten smaller sheepshead - 3lb and under, and when properly prepared (mud line removed), are delicious. -Ryan

Wired2Fish Oh ok, that answers my question. On the Columbia River the state dept had a Squawfish bounty program, you could turn in dead fish for cash. They were trying to save the salmon any way they could. I wasn't sure if drum were a nuisance like Asian carp for example. Keep up the informative videos.
@pdbandit17 жыл бұрын
Lake Erie is loaded with them, they can be a nuisance, basically here on Lake Erie they compete with smallmouth bass for food and they like the same areas. People here used to pay 4.50 a dozen or so for crawfish for smallmouth bait, a school of sheephead could call for a bait run!

I love swingheads, but it drives me NUTS that I haven't found a single company in the market that makes a micro finesse model. 3/16oz is about the smallest I've seen, I would love some 1/16 or 3/32 paired with a size 2 ewg worm hook. I CAN make my own, but that takes time and effort that I don't really have room in my budget for. Seems like these bait companies are missing out on a good opportunity

Yes sir, Davy was using 14lb XPS KVD Fluorocarbon, a medium to medium heavy fast action rod paired with high speed reel, something in the 7.3:1 range.

Confusing yes but an alias for freshwater drum is often “sheepshead”. Not to be confused with the actual saltwater faring sheepshead.

This was the upper Mississippi River on the Minnesota/Wisconsin border. The freshwater drum are considered one of the most widely distributed fish in North America, extending from the Guatemala all the way into Canada.
