Our goal is to allow people to connect and play board games with each other from anywhere in the world. By combing a physical board with modern technology, we hope to bring a more interpersonal experience that is not achieved through a computer screen. See our other videos for a look inside the system and how moves such as castling and en passant are handled.

In the "Technorama", which is a technical/scientific museum here in Switzerland, there's a setup like a table with sand on it and a metal ball is dragged through the sand with magnets too. They make beautiful patterns in the sand that way.

this is REALLY cool. i am so glad someone has done it--and done it well, too! all it needs now is some screen or alert function. maybe it would tell a player the other has made a move, then they hit a button, and the machine plays out the move. great work guys. keep it up!

1) It seems pretty simple if they're mapping it out square by square, each piece containing a NFC chip and a magnet. 2) Magnets.

It can because all you have to do have the arduino know all the pieces and where they are at first. You could then have the arduino track their places when the game is finished etc. so it could be automatically reset.

HOW?! Im guessing pieces have magnetic bases and under the table is a grid of electro-magnets. But the grid would have to be pretty big and consist of relatively small magnets because you pull pieces between two other pieces and so-forth. Please let me know how if you can. This looks like it would be a really fun project!

Bravo, really cool. But I think it would be much more satisfying if the offensive piece which defeats the opponent was to move into the square of its victim and then the 'dead' piece slid off the board. Less confusing especially when the defeated piece goes off and then the lag of the attacking piece finally occupies its new square. I know, what an ass I am. It is probably difficult to do it this way, but well done just the same.

I would like more if the chessboard was a touchscreen and you should play a card game on it from a distance (or closed range like here) with real cards while viewing your opponent cards in a screen as image...and it's one card was holding its own program packet for the attributes/rules it has by placing the card on the board and the touchscreen read the code from the cards and displays many cool things!! Duel Start!!!! Well that's a product that will sell for sure!! new generation for games!!!

Very interesting! Is this set up a bit like a cnc machine underneath? I noticed when a piece is taken it moves one piece off the board before moving the other one, making me think the z has a magnet on it that moves up to contact the pieces and the x and y pull them from the board, this way the magnet won't interfere with other pieces while moving around. Regardless, very cool!

It would be really cool to see this working over a longer range, say maybe if you wanted the feel of playing chess with your friend in another city or even another country. Or perhaps the technology could be used to remotely control machines in landscapes that are too dangerous for humans. There are plenty of applications for this and chess is one of them.
