Great video. I used to flash some old Linksys routers have with the DD-WRT firmware and setup wireless bridge mode. Another use case for this is to connect devices that don't have wifi built-in but need internet access AND you can't run a cable from the device to the router. I used to have a Sony Blu-Ray player that could connect to the internet via ethernet or through a nearly $100 USB wifi adapter that only worked with certain player models. With my wireless bridge I was able to connect my Blu-Ray player to the internet without having to run an ethernet cable across the hous. Nowadays, most devices have wifi built-in so its not that big of an issue anymore, but it still can come in handy. Pretty cool stuff to learn and play with.

The video was well done EXCEPT there was no discussion about wireless signal strength. Trying to get a wireless signal from a SOHO router from one building to another is likely not possible because the signal likely won't be strong enough. Also, if the signal is only 2 bars in strength, that means all connections going through the bridge (wired or wireless) will be limited in speed to the 2 bars of signal from the distant router. I also would have liked to see the option of buying a wireless bridge to connect two routers over greater distances, which would likely be required in the example shown here to get a much stronger (and therefore FASTER) signal from one router to the other.
@SickPrid32 жыл бұрын
All you need is external signal booster or repeaters on both ends. If you have access to roof of both buildings the best choice would be directional antennas.

One thing that should be noted. The routers DO NOT HAVE TO BE THE SAME. I just bridged an old two band Linksys router with a new D-Link tri-band router. I have a desktop that relied on a small USB wireless adapter...a less than ideal internet solution. I connected to the ethernet port on the Linksys router and now have 1 gbs. The bridge mode on some routers give more than one security protocol to bridge with...WPA2 was the best choice for this configuration.

i wish in the next video you woul teach us diffrence between wireless bridge mode vs AP-Client mode. pros and cons. its been bugging me for years.. thanks!
@allenperera61582 жыл бұрын
Bridge Mode is explained in this video. Basically joining two networks together. AP 'Client Mode' is acting like a USB Wi-Fi dongle but receiving packets using LAN Port(s) (Think of PCs, Printers, TVs with LAN Ports) instead of USB Ports. You can add a Network switch to the AP in 'Client Mode" to expand to extra PCs/TVs Etc... I'll give u an example. Let's say I would like to put my Printer which has a LAN port but no built in Wi-Fi, in another room to save space but I don't want to pull a network cable. So I'll just buy a cheapo Wi-Fi extender and configure it as Client mode and link to the main router via 2.4ghz. From the Extender's buttocks i patch a network cable to the printer and Voila, there you have it. In the Future I may want to add a network switch to it's buttocks to expand more LAN ports for a PC and TV.

Excellent. Many questions answered. But...if the secondary building is getting only 2 or 3 bars, would you recommend an external repeater, master-slave setup?
@JJFlores197 Жыл бұрын
The ideal thing would be to run an ethernet cable to the secondary building or a fiber cable and then install a wifi access point in that building for better network coverage. The thing with mesh devices an extenders and repeaters are that the speed and performance greatly depends on how far the other building is as well as any other obstacles like trees, buildings, weather, etc. If the buildings are too far to feasibly run a cable, you could setup a point to point wireless link on the roofs of either building and then install a network switch and a wifi access point at the second building.
@mwngw Жыл бұрын
@JJFlores197 ...thank you. The latter is the more likely my outcome. Ironically, the outbuilding gets 3 bars at the closest point to the main building but drops rapidly. in few feet later.

Is wireless bridge the same thing as wireless access point? Also, is the wireless bridge protected such as having security options such as wpa2 or WPA3 to prevent unauthorized access? Thanks for your videos. They really open up my mind. ❤
@Eternal_Tech Жыл бұрын
A wireless access point generally is connected to the network with an Ethernet cable. The wireless access point then allows devices to connect to it via Wi-Fi. The purpose of a wireless access point is to take a wired connection and make it wireless. A wireless bridge can and should use WPA2 or WPA3 (AES). To the primary router, the wireless Ethernet bridge is just another Wi-Fi device.

What's the difference between the access point where you made a video about it in a couple of years ago and the bridge mode in this video. It seems like those of two are extending the wifi signal from the existing wifi router. Btw, great tutorial. Thanks for sharing this.
@Eternal_Tech Жыл бұрын
A wireless access point generally connects to the network with an Ethernet cable. The wireless access point then allows devices to connect to it via Wi-Fi. The purpose of a wireless access point is to take a wired connection and make it wireless. A wireless bridge connects to the network via Wi-Fi, not an Ethernet cable. The wireless bridge then allows devices to connect to it via wired Ethernet connections. That is, it converts a Wi-Fi signal to Ethernet connections. However, as mentioned in the video, some wireless bridges can also serve as a wireless access point at the same time they serve as a wireless bridge.

Notable use is for WISPs to distribute Internet access to their subscribers. Vendors of these network equipment include Ubiquiti, Mikrotik, Mimosa, IgniteNet, and LigoWave.
@James_Knott2 жыл бұрын
My concern with this is people will use a couple of old routers they have kicking around (I have 2 802.11g only), which will limit performance. If they decide to buy new ones, they will likely spend more than using the proper sort of equipment. WiFi gear, designed specifically for point to point links, costs less than many new routers and will likely do a better job. They will also support PoE, so you don't need AC power nearby. We have some of those on my condo property, for security cameras.

Cool video, thank you! I have one question, is there a way to figure out the MAC address of the router acting as the DHCP server, when I am using one of the computers on the wireless bridge router?
@JJFlores1979 ай бұрын
Usually the bridge mode device doesn't act as a DHCP server. I don't know if you can directly find the MAC address of the DHCP server through your PC. But you can find the IP address of the DHCP server. If you're running Windows, open a command prompt window and type in: ipconfig /all and look for the DHCP server entry of your network adapter. It will tlel you the IP address of the DHCP server which in turn you can figure out what device is acting as your DHCP server.

May I ask if it is possible to configure a wireless bridge that the bridged wirelessly router (2nd router - on the right) would be available by using a computer connected via ethernet cable to the host router (1st - on the left) (available by browser and IP address for example like the first one)? And if the answer is 'yes', how make a configuration of both devices to make it possible. Thx for the accurate answer. If not possible - then what are the options to get access to the 2nd (bridged) router when is in the bridged mode?
@PeterGryph0n2 жыл бұрын
Is there anyway to connect 2 routers using WDS bridging and switch ON DHCP on the secondary router and keep it on a different subnet? Or can it only be done using a CAT-6 cable from LAN of the main router to the WAN of the secondary router for the DHCP of the secondary router to be kept ON?
