Do you know what would be ever better? If camera manufacturers that sell those $2K+ cameras would just put that small BT chip with aptX (that cost less than $5 on aliexpress) inside and simply allow users to monitor audio wirelessly by directly connecting to the camera. I mean, they could even go crazy and have like a delay adjustment in the menu for those with BT headphones without low latency mode. That way they won't even need to waste space for that pesky 3.5mm headphone jack for monitoring (which they don't bother to put into most cameras anyway), and also they would be able to put this feature even in very compact bodies like Sony RX100 lineup. Imaging living in that world! Oh, one can only hope… In any case, Caleb, thanks for the video!

Do you know why? Because monitor headphones are called monitors not headphone for a reason. First of all latency, bluetooth is digital, encoding and decoding take time. Second is digital, bluetooth connection is slow and no way match the frequency range and transmitting rate of analog, thus wont fully represent the full spectrum of the audio recorded thus not monitoring any more. Bluetooth 5.0 will certainly bring new players to the table but 5.0 is relatively new so it takes time.

Nguyễn Anh Quân Don’t want to be too harsh, but are you one of those people who thinks vinyl is superior and gold plated hdmi cables are a must have? Dude, even 15+yo ancient BT2.0 can transmit at the rates of 2Mb/s! Top quality aac/mp3 needs only 0.3Mb/s for quality that is indistinguishable from uncompressed wav files, what frequency range are you talking about? I watch videos everyday with my AirPods and have 0 problems with latency, damn, I can even use them in GarageBand for melody sketches and there and only there, for input, you start noticing delay and time lag, not for output which is what we’re talking here about. Manufacturers don’t do it because most of them are lazy non-innovative cash grabbing monstrosities. I mean, take a look at pro-video market. It’s smaller companies like Blackmagic who deliver amazing and revolutionary products nowadays, not Canons of the world.
@anhquansei
@anhquansei 5 жыл бұрын
@@Frytech Dude, first of all, consumer technology is trickled down from professional technology. I'll talk from consumer perspective. A7SII XAVC codec record audio at 48khz 16bit which is approximately 1.5mbps. APTX LL codec data rate is 420kbps, which is one third the recording rate, so listening to the audio transmitted via APTX LL codec you are actually listening to one third of what being recorded. Defeat the purpose of monitoring, how is this significant? Have you ever heard of the problem where the picture on camera screen differ from what you see on your monitor? Do you want to listen to a record thinking yes everything is fine only later to realize there are some weird sound that had been filtered out by the encoding and decoding process? Beside, APTX LL codec is licensed by Qualcolmn, require both transmitter and receiver to be certified to work. Do you want to pay more money for the camera then pay more money for a headphone to use it? How many people use bluetooth headphone? How many of them are APTX LL compatible? Airpods are not APTX LL compatible I must remind you. They have latency around 120ms, look it up if you dont believe me. Moreover, BT2.0 transmits at the rate of 0.7Mbps, bluetooth 4.2 transmits @ 1Mbps, BT5 transmits @ 2Mbps so get your fact straight. Secondly, watching video on youtube and using apps via bluetooth headphone is different from monitoring live recording. The system (phone, pc) compensate for the latency by actually playing the audio ahead because they are able to do so. Want me to prove it? Instead of listening directly via your phone bluetooth, plug a transmitter in via 3.5mm port on your phone, then connect your headphone to the transmitter and tell me if there is latency or not. Thirdly, there are Fujifilm, Blackmagic, Sony, Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, 6 major players in consumer market right now and they are very competitive. If this idea is that necessary and lucrative and so easy to do why none of them have jumped on the ship yet? Please refer to my second paragraph for the answer. Now let's talk about professional market Manufacturer dont do it because the consumer doesnt need it/the technology is not there yet to meet the standard. Meet any pro audio guys who work professionally and ask them about bluetooth audio to see if they're going to laugh at your face or not. Look up wireless audio monitoring system and tell me how you are going to fit that into a consumer camera body. Beside wireless audio use radio, which is analog, digital has just came into the market very recently and again they are for consumer, not professional. Blackmagic cameras are very consumer and prosumer oriented and they have their own market. Professional cinema cameras come from Panavision, RED, Arri. Professional broadcast/ENG camera however dominated by Sony, Panasonic and Canon. Canon however started the DSLR video camera trend in 2008 with their 5D mark II so dont say that they are not innovative. What I'm trying to say is you are a consumer and have consumer mindset so clearly you want this and want that and think it's easy to do so but actually it is not. Technology has always been developing and has it own limitations. One day when the technology is there you will see it. There are a lot to talk about if you are interested I will tell you more about bluetooth audio in general and why manufactures dont include them in their camera to be specific. I've watched some of your videos, you're clearly very biased and need to work more on your knowledge. Calling people fan boy when being called out is not a way to develop a news channel. Comparing a lossy audio format to a lossless uncompressed wav format and telling they are equivalent is ridiculous, yes they are equivalent if you are listening from a 30$ headphone, or... bluetooth headphone. It's like saying that an 1000$ iPhone can shoot video equivalent to a 50000$ ARRI. Yes it is equivalent if you're watching from a 3 inch screen, via KZbin, at 360p.

This was great overall, but minor complaint: For your "low-latency" choices, you suddenly switched from previewing via camera output to using the MixPre-3. Given your past findings testing HDMI monitors and such, it's possible the headphone jack on the camera is adding to latency where the MixPre-3 doesn't? Not sure, just felt a little odd to suddenly switch which output you were using, even if the results are the same. Also the MixPre-3 has BT but doesn't allow monitoring from it. Fail.

02:40 Latency on monitoring audio for video is not a problem, in fact on some set ups it's actually a feature! it's "called confidence mode", and on old Nagra tape recorders it was a setting that recorders would use, as you could separate the headphone sound from any actual sound creeping in from the real world. [edit] so I watched the rest of the video and latency is the only thing tested here, I guess because it's a quick easy thing to demonstrate. There's no mention of audio quality, range or battery life, which are far more important issues.

This was literally a feature on old professional analogue tape recorders used on film shoots, and it's exactly how traditional film sound recordists would monitor the audio. I imagine the newer digital equivalents have a similar feature. I'm personally sold on the cheapest version for exactly that reason.

I've tested latency with wireless LAVs if you want to know, as it might apply to headphones to. So the thing to consider is also the DISTANCE. It's very important. So when you have an Audio Cable, electrons move pretty close to the speed of light, so you'll get that audio almost instantly even if you have a 60 foot cable in between the source and your ears/recorder. However, I was very intrigued to find out what the Speed of Wireless is (as there is very little info online), and after some calculation I found that it is Double the Speed of Sound, meaning that a person talking into a LAV far away will reach the camera 2x Quicker than his voice propagating through the air and into a Shotgun Mic mounted on the camera. But wait, there's more... Although that's the actual speed when the signal is sent, it still needs to process that sending and receiving (it doesn't happen instantly), and I measured this LAG as being equivalent to about 1m (3 feet) of sound speed. So therefore, to give some examples, here's how the sound travels to your camera/recorder (either via air with the speed of sound or via Wireless + Lag) - Subject at 1m Wireless: 1m LAG + 0.5m Transmission - Subject at 1m Shotgun: 0 Lag + 1m Propagation -> So the Wireless is actually behind the Shotgun on the Cam - Subject at 2m Wireless: 1m LAG + 1m Transmission - Subject at 2m Shotgun: 0 Lag + 2m Propagation -> Here they are equal. They should sync up perfectly. - Subject at 3m Wireless: 1m LAG + 1.5m Transmission - Subject at 3m Shotgun: 0 LAG +3m Propagation -> And now the Wireless will get to your cam/recorder quicker. And so on, you get the idea. That's the speed I got, of course LAG may be different depending on the product's internal chip. From what I see in your video 1 Frame of Latency = 10m in Sound Speed. So there will be a perfect Sync in your Brain if you move 10m away from the action. As for the sub-frame LAG, I say it's getting closer to that Wireless quality.

I shoot out of the back of my 4x4 in remote places and HATE dragging my headphone cord everywhere. I think the HT4189 might be the perfect solution for me because I think I can power it off my AndyCine A6, yes? I shoot with the Fuji XH1 and need the monitor to see myself so I have that giant battery just sitting there!

After years of using the Avantree Saturn Pro, I bought the new version of the Hagibis transmitter after watching this. Hope it works well!

I actually paired Airpods with the Taotronics for audio monitoring for weddings but I'm limited to around 33ft

Great review - so after watching I decided on the TaoTronics 2-in-1 & ordered - question ; if the other end does NOT support aptX will these still work? I believe YES - just found out from the Apple Community board that iphones (and apple in general ) do NOT support aptX because they have to pay high licensing fees to Qualcomm - and Apple, despite being rich, never wants to share in paying anyone royalties - so in several hours I will see if I can use these TaoTronics 2-in-1 with a bluetooth lapel mic, transmitting to this received connected to my Canon XF-400 video camera - I usually shoot on-location with VERY loud noise background so want to capture my commentary audio ;)

Hey Caleb, great comparison. Very well done. Don't think you've done this yet, but how about a comparison of sd card backup devices, such as the gnarbox, WD My Passport wireless pro, WD my passport wireless ssd, and maybe a raspberry pi 4 version build (I'm considering building one)?

I picked up that Taotronics guy a couple weeks ago so I could keep an ear on a (definitely amateur) boom operator. it might end up getting a permanent place in my bag when I'm one-man-banding interviews and trying to avoid getting tangled.

Caleb, what about latency on 2.4 GHz transmitter/receivers like the Rode Wireless Go? There are several wireless guitar transmitters as well that operate in that range; maybe they could present viable options?

I was pretty much wondering the same thing. It might be tricky feeding the right voltage signal to the TX side of the Wireless Go system to use it for monitoring. But if nothing else, I'd love to know how the latency of the Wireless Go compares with these other examples.

This is so exciting! Here's a stupid question but could you use a headphone splitter output from the camera to multiple bluetooth devices to theoretically have a producer and cam operator both listening on their own headphones?

Thank you for this. I've been looking for a solution for a while and didn't want to buy a bunch of crap before finding something that really works. (I did that with lav mics.)

I've actually just received some Bluetooth transmitters from Ali express, $4 per piece, lots of latency unfortunately!

What the transmitter and receiver does is they encode the analog signal, transmit it then decode it again, this introduce latency and require computing power. Do you expect a 400$ PC to encode a video faster than a 5000$? So 4$ transmitter is not the best choice here.

Caleb, what did you end up doing? What were the headphones with the short cable?!?! Inquiring minds need to know ;-) I use the Rode Go for shooting myself outdoors and want to hear the monitor through wireless headphones to check the sound before I press the record button.
