I was wondering too what's going on with the sound but not to the point to think about it much. I feel sory for the nasty comments that you got. There will be a lot of envy in the air which would manifest in nasty comments. Maybe whenever you have problem with the footage, just make an in-video comment that describes the issue. This will hopefully reduce the "nastymeter" in the comments. Love your work. As always, thumb's up from me. :-)

UPDATE: Some of you asked why not just use a Bluetooth transmitter? I tested them last year and they had too much latency for live monitoring. You hear the person talking bleeding through your headphones, and then a split-second later the headphones repeat the sound, and it drives you absolutely insane. Thus, I settled on this Rode Go configuration because it doesn't have any perceptible latency. HOWEVER, a commenter pointed out that Qualcom released their AptX chipset in the past year that promises lower latency. I've ordered a bunch of hardware that claims compatibilty to see if any of it is acceptable for live monitoring and i'll publish an updated review soon.

Eagerly awaiting updated reviews! I'm a big fan, Tony and Chelsea! Keep up the great work! I wonder if you might say a few words about inputting line level headphone outputs to the camera mic jack - like from a Zoom audio recorder. I had to get a 3.5mm 35dB attenuation cable to make the connection from my Zoom F1 to my A6500. While a vast improvement, I was still left with a low buzz on the camera recording. Still have to sync up the external recording to the video in post to get high quality audio. I've never seen any reviewer mention this problem.

This is a problem I had for so long until I did the same thing with the older rode wireless packs. I too thought it would be a no brainer to implement into cameras, but it's actually more difficult than you would think. Bluetooth headphones usually have around 500ms of delay. If you are watching a KZbin video, that is not an issue since the video can just be offset to compensate. Whenever you do this to monitor in real time, it is very noticeable. The first thing I tried was a Bluetooth dongle into the camera, but it was very jarring to be hearing everything that was happening with a delay and things not syncing up on camera. The only way this works (with the current Bluetooth standard) is to do it over 2.4GHz like what you did. This works since the latency is only around 6ms which is about 1/10 of a frame. And while many cameras do have the capability to transmit 2.4GHz, all of the headphones people use are Bluetooth. So it would still require some headphone adapter / hacky workaround which is why none of the camera manufactures have done it.

Tony: Clever DIY solution here. Agree there should be a wireless recording/monitor solution built into cameras of this class. You should be able to pair bluetooth headphones (or headset) to the camera for monitoring at the very least, and for those that wish to (not me), even use the mic on them to record.

I had to get a low latency aptX model but now and then your right, I have to reset it because of that. Also, they don't seem to be full frequency but good enough for most. I also used a matched bluetooth transmitter and receiver with wired headphones and the same thing. It worked pretty good but needed reset every once in a while but not terrible. HOMUSPOT is the brand (or maybe its HOMESPOT, logo is weird). I use them on my TVs to my stereo audio switcher as well and lips stay syncd most of the time. I like your setup better for someone not penny pinching and want better quality.

there is a small problem with this: similarly to how your wireless mic's signal got plagued by interference your monitor signal can. won't be as bad, sure, but you still need to have a wired headphone available to switch to for monitoring if need be / for double-checking. and yes, there's also the problem of latency, which is better on some devices/solutions, but not that great overall. PS: I'd love to know who produces / where I can find that small audio cable - stuff like this is usually gold for rigging

100% agree!!! It's RIDICULOUS, that xxxx€ cameras in 2020 do not have stuff like: - Wireless Sound - GPS - proper Touch menues - proper menues in general (with more customization, making unlimited own presets, naming them and putting them on buttons, being able to adjust color curves, etc.) - HEIF/HEIC instead of just JPG and RAW - in-camera-stacking for virtual-ND and HDR (WITH RAW-support) - proper panorama stitching - USB-Powering + Charging + native Webcam mode - etc. It's like none of those companies have any motivation to actually improve their products. ALL current cameras have so many big flaws. Obvious flaws. And easy to fix flaws. But somehow they manage to overlook those collectively. Sometimes they even release bodies without USB-C!!! WTF?!

Building Bluetooth into a camera won't work too well because Bluetooth introduces a delay, a very perceptible delay, When you're playing back a video on your computer of phone the moving image is delayed to compensate for the delay introduced by the codec, the OS, and your wireless earbuds, but that does not work for live applications. Apple Airpods use the AAC codec for high quality audio, which introduces a best case delay of 140ms, which makes them less than great for live sound monitoring. The lower quality SBC codec is not much better. Newer codecs are better, but better here is 40 ms or so, but they're often not available yet, and they're proprietary (e.g. from Qualcomm) and may not show up everywhere (like in Apple products).

Great Idea! And yes, why are all camera manufacturers still in the 80s? Google and Apple show us that you can get razor sharp noise free night photos out from a crappy tiny sensor. It is these things why they die. Give us Airpod integration, AI based night modes GPS information from the phone and use their hotspot to upload directly to google photos. Nikon, have a look to wikipedia what HEIC is. Canikony‘s color science is great an now give us those already developed photos in an highly compressed image format with more than 8bit dynamic range and without JPG artefacts at a small filesize. JPEG2000 exists for decades and now with HEIC there is an industry standard, as bluetooth audio is.

In a nod to the hater's creed: Commenters gonna Comment. 😅 To be fair to these commenters, the comment system does make it too easy to throw off stream of consciousness, thought-of-the-moment statements. I often find myself commenting to title names before watching a video myself. Alas, I too am afflicted by this degerative disease of the mind, called "Humanity"... I do have one suggestion though, when it comes to sound, it might be better to record the sound with both the camera mic setup, and a mic recording to a dedicated audio device, so you have a backup recording in case of sound problems with the main recording. Think of it as the audio equivalent of recording your video to two sd card slots. 😁 When I'm running the sound board at Church (Yamaha TF-5), I've lost count of the number of times I've been brought up short by the headphones I forgot were around my neck.

that's a good point... why the hell you can't pair headphones for audio monitoring? But also... does it have bluetooth? I didn't think so, because new bluetooth protocols are so slow and aimed for low energy applications, it wouldn't be suitable for remote control or file transfer. I think it only has Wi-Fi and I've never seen Wi-Fi headphones. Then again. Sony should've put (or dedicated) bluetooth just for that reason - pairing headphones for audio monitoring. After all it's a camera oriented towards video people, they care about that stuff.

Why not Bluetooth? Actual latency. Typically 120ms+, will depend on the implementation. APT-X Low Latency can get lower (still very high compared to your hack) but almost no headphones support it. That might happen with Bluetooth Low Energy audio in a couple years, with better latency profiles, but today latency is entirely the issue. In the meantime, your hack is by far the best solution! Brilliant

I first saw this little hack from DSLR Video Shooter and have tried it, though sadly it doesn’t work for any headphones with a decent impedance and definitely not in a loud environment. The Chinese copies however of the Rode Go is actually FAR better as the receivers have a headphone jack with proper ability to drive decent headphones to full volume and instead operate in the UHF band, allowing them to function like a regular Comtec and transmit from one camera to many individuals on the correct channel.

I noticed the audio in your last video as well, but I figured you probably didn't need anymore annoying comments :) Just curious, did you use Izotope RX8 to fix it?

i agree 100% wireless audio and video if implemented effordlessly could make work simply faster and more convenient... and working faster is simply more efficient. the budgets are shrinking and working faster but still with great quality is still important

I noticed the audio issue on the video but I just blew it off figuring you had a bad enough day with dealing with whatever you had to deal with that you didn't need another Captain Obvious pointing out the audio issues. Nice trick you've come up with.

Yes it works but only for mono/right channel. I mostly record two inputs (left/right) and then you will only be able to hear the right channel.

Seems like you almost said this - the camera has bluetooth, why doesn't it just support a bluetooth headphone/mic or even the Airpods?

That's an interesting hack, only if I would use the wireless mic for only that purpose, I would get a much cheaper one

I tried this but the Rode input was too hot but at the same time the output was too low to drive my headphones.

It sounds like a Bluetooth headphone solution would be perfect for monitoring sound if Sony enabled it.

You could just get a $15 blutooth transmitter that you plug into the camera and have it play through your headphones

Why not use a 3.5mm to bluetooth transmitter? Then you can use proper wireless headphones.

Tony -- are you sure this is entirely safe? I'm just thinking of the fact that a headphone output is technically a "power" output, e.g. expecting a certain impedance and delivering some power (albeit very small for most headphones) -- the concern would be that it might hurt the transmitter (if not the Rode then maybe a different brand.) The other issue would be if the Rode (or other brand) is supplying PiP on the mic jack, it might mess with the circuitry in the camera in a weird or bad way. It might all be nothing to worry about, I'm not sure, but worth checking in to? Or is the "mic" input on the Rode actually more of a "line level" input which traditionally can be interoperated with headphone outputs?
