I've been recently bemoaning the fact that the Tesla connector isn't going to be the world charging connector standard, but it looks like wireless charging will end up being the real standard. In my opinion this won't happen for many years, perhaps a decade or two, but I can definitely see it taking over eventually. It solves so many problems with infrastructure, convenience, and will almost certainly help with eventual charging speeds. As always, a nice, compact show.

Delighted you enjoyed it Andy, thanks! Good points about wireless taking over, but not soon! The more options we have, and the more research into new tech, the better!

This looks like a great solution for those who live in flats or a row house. You just need to convince the building owner or city to install the power sources and then rely on neighbors not to "ice" the pads. With parking always at a premium, not ideal but possible.

Thanks for chipping in William. We'll see how the tech develops over time, that'll probably dictate the use-case scenarios a lot!

I wonder if I can retrofit it in my Tesla to make it charge wirelessly. As long as it doesn't affect my battery warranty of 8 years, I'm willing to put some money in it for convenience and cool factor.
@BestElectricVehicle3 жыл бұрын
Theoretically it should be possible, but the cost may be huge! Can't wait to see how it all works out over the coming years!

I see great potential for public parking garages or lots. It could even provide a revenue stream for municipalities or businesses. Regarding alignment of the coils, it seems like there should be a function that allows the auto to position itself over the chargepad.
@BestElectricVehicle3 жыл бұрын
Good points in there Steve, thanks for sharing! The auto position should be straightforward...the likes of Nio already do it at battery swap stations. Can't wait to see how the tech develops!

So cool.. If they paired this with a wifi identification broadcast, these could be installed at intersections, parking lots, and anywhere with high traffic, and an ID broadcast from the car would tell the upcoming charging plate your vehicle identification, which links into the onboard charging interface.. you could buy power or sell power based on your planned or expected route, and the power rates where you're traveling. Once these become durable and reliable enough, the main factor for placement would just be volume of traffic, and how long the traffic remains over the plate.. even if it's less than a second, that may be enough on a busy roadway for the charging plate to pass a charge most of the day, and if you put a row of 10 of them out, it would be enough to make a difference for the vehicle (if they're often enough). Similar to the Uber interface, owner/installers of charging plates could receive the local electric rate + a surcharge for providing and maintaining the charging station, which would be primarily profit if a charging station were operated off solar.

Yeahk it's fascinating stuff alright! And the potential applications/benefits are huge! We can't wait to see how it turns out as the technology advances. Thanks for the comment...great to get people's opinion like that!

I see this as being improved as the inverse square law principle becomes minimized. Tesla coils and other forms of wireless electric transmission pose dangers however this is pretty safe technology.
@russellkennedy49193 жыл бұрын
Plugging in is so easy to do. Grab the plug and walk away. This however is even easier. Who cares what plug you need (CCS, CHAdeMO, Tesla), park and walk away. This is the future. People will always choose the simpler solution.
@BestElectricVehicle3 жыл бұрын
Simple tends to be best alright...but at the moment the gap in cost is so much that people would be put off. Thanks for the comment Russell!

Combinations like Uber coupled with Tesla and WiTriCity will make for the complete autonomous driving system.

Will definitely play a big part in autonomous driving...only issue is how long we have to wait for that to be feasible! Thanks for the comment!

On this same subject Lawrence Livermore labs does wireless charging testing. They showed a proof of concept for ups ev trucks last year. Which did 125kwhs over up to an 18" air gap at 93% Total efficiency. So it's coming soon no doubt. It will make evs more convenient and help with silly issues we have like someone unplugging your car so they can charge theirs. Plus enable true autonomous vehicle's. Also the new genesis gv60 will have wireless main battery charging from the factory. Bmw and Kia have also done wireless charging pilot programs outside the U.S.

Excited about the tech possibilites, but... What's cost and charger weight of wireless vs plug-in chargers? I'm skeptical of your claim that they are really "on par". Evidence? You city nothing from MIT. :(

“Power snacking” is the in-vogue way of describing a slow, severely handicapped way of charging an electric vehicle (11kW). WiTricity technology seems to want to be known as the “Snickers” of the EV charging market. It is also the sound you hear when WiTricity is brought up as a possible solution to charging EVs. Here is one guy that is not buying it… kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGi7ZYeId8atrNE (21:20-23.50)

I see you have now posted this same response to other WiTricity posts. Do you work for a competitor? Additionally, I find it funny that you show a vide of Elon from 2014. Seven years is an eternity for this technology which didn't even exist back then. Finally, Elon hated crypto not too long ago, but now is a huge investor. I don't think your arguments are very valid.

You're citing a very old video there Marcelo. Plenty of people 'power snack' by plugging in. Nothing wrong with it and suits many people's lifestyles.

check out 'easelink' system, it's pretty impressive, especially that it's designed for 3-phase power connection. Now, this might be a better standard for EU, because 3-phase on-board chargers are more expensive than single phase ones. But in US, both this wireless charger, and normal on-board charger would require single-phase rectifiers, so the total cost of such wireless charger + standard on-board charger would be less in US than in EU.

No doubt that focused wireless charging is an enabling technology for autonomous vehicles, and really useful for grazing whenever parked in a bay. The implementation of inductive roads is problematic due to both installation and maintenance cost and complexity, and all the trials have failed for this reason. Trams in Europe (Bombardier) use inductive charging in city centres , the main issue for mass adoption is a worldwide standard for this function.

Good point well made, thanks Dave! Looks like some of WiTricity's tech is becoming an international standard, so that should help a lot!

this seems like bettser solution for public parking places and garages where you have parking meter and street lights so you can combine both wireless and cable charging by putting control unit into parking meter or even each wireless charging pad with cable charging be their own parking meter and power from electricity street lights so you could technically get power from 7 .5 to 60 kwh spreads over 5 to 10 parking places that depends if street lights are on or not . Take for example small town of 50000 people where power production is humble a street lights use onlyi around 30 kwh of 60 ish available and that includes all possible gadgets included from 5g controllers laser optic internet (lifi 5g modules combination for mobile network ) video surveillance solar panel police camera itd (anything you can think of and install it you will have 30 kwh of electricty during night available for other chargers and somewhere around 60 ish during day , So you could achieve realistic speed 7.5 by night and 11 kwh by day from each street light without causing overload to infrastructure for every 10 parking spaces ,putting fast chargers from 150 kwh to 450 kwh on each gas station next to flex fuels and amonia /hydrogen because to mas elecctrify transportation we shouldn't rely soly on one technology rather to combine them together until we get fully functional product that is cheap for production and available for each pocket capitalism 101 (using sodim sulfide solid state batteries that are way cheaper than lithium batteries combining with both wireless charging and solid oxide cells that go on bio fuels and hydrogen fuel cels using liquid amonia instead of hydrogen in way the veichels have bigger cheaper modular battery with smaller tank and more efficient electric engine and can at least give you 600 km with single tank combine that with solid state battery that on full charge can go 786 miles and you got your self a fully functional product under 30000 euro this is whole point producing car that cost less than 30000 for most people 20000 is where they drawn line with price .)
