I completed this mod and followed this guide, very helpful. I wanted to share what I learned. When using “cruise control”, you can push the stick backwards and it just reduces the speed by a little bit. Same with pushing it forward, it speeds up in increments. Pretty handy to stay in cruise control mode but still have throttle control.

Thanks Jaypaw. Yes, that is a nice feature. I tried to stay with the basics. It would be nice if the unit had directions and/or the videos were easier to follow.

I did this build last week and tested it on the water in my Pelican Catch PWR 100 on Saturday. It was awesome! I also added foot pedal steering after watching some of your other videos. Total game-changer! I discovered that if you activate the cruise control button on the remote, you can "bump" the throttle just a bit and the speed will increase/decrease in small increments. Thanks so much for taking the time to put these videos out!!!

So I've been using this for a year now and it's been great. Have you ever experienced or heard of an issue that when the remote is connected to the trolling motor for the first time that day, when the throttle is used, the motor goes full speed for a couple seconds and then bogs down to about half-speed? My motor will do this 15-20 times before it will go full throttle without bogging down and then it's good for the rest of the day. Since it worked I ignored it but I just got a second trolling motor, rigged it up the same, and the new motor does almost the exact same thing. I've checked and rechecked the wiring, programming, etc. and I cannot find the issue.
@Aksmaniyak
@Aksmaniyak 4 ай бұрын
No, I have never experienced that and I have used several of the remotes. The only thing I could think to do would be to run the throttle and use the =,- throttle toggle adjustment until it goes to zero and doesn't move.

@@Aksmaniyak Having some grief with the 880 esc. Runs fine with no load but stops after a few seconds in the water, then restarts after a minute or so and does the same thing. Your videos are very informative, I know you said that you should use a PWM instead of a ESC on trolling motors over 50 pounds of thrust. I would like to have everything in the head of the trolling motor like you showed in one of your videos. I’m a total greenhorn when it comes to these controllers. Wouldn’t a higher amperage ESC, such as a 100 amp continuous ESC work? Obviously I don’t want any failures when I am out on the water. Please explain (in Layman terms) why the bigger ESC won’t work. Thanks!

@Aksmaniyak

Why?
@shortys1994

This comes from RC world. If you turn on ESC before transmitter, your ESC doesnt have something “telling it what to do”, so it could turn to full power “randomly”. Turning on Tx first ensures this doesn’t happen.

That's pretty cool! I got a 12V linear actuator arm setup which moves my tiller from left to right with a wired momentary switch. Do you think there would be a way to add the steering functionality to this remote, to use the left/right buttons of the joystick? The actuator arm moves out with positive current, and when you reverse the polarity, it goes back in. There must be a way to do this...

I'm currently looking into this myself. I have a 12v linear actuator arm that is attached to my motor tiller and mounted on the side of my kayak. The arm moves in and out when supplied with either 12v + or 12v - (reverse polarity makes the arm go back in). It's flawless but I have it wired up to a momentary switch that I hold in my hand next to me kayak seat. Having something wireless would be fun. Also, my setup doesn't actually allow me to control the speed of the motor, just the steering. So integrating mty steering setup into this ESC/RC remote idea would be so wicked! I basically need to find some way to trigger 12v + and 12v - wirelessly...

Is it possible to do this in a way where you can still keep the analog 5 step speed control in the stock handle on the trolling motor in case the ESC encounters a problem and you have to manually run it?
@Aksmaniyak
@Aksmaniyak Жыл бұрын
Using a PWM, you can keep the stock switch intact and use quick connects if it fails. An ESC is more complicated. You would need a separate control box for each using quick connects for the power and speed controller. You can disconnect the pos/neg of the trolling motor and plug directly to the battery for emergency use. The motor would immediately jump to WOT but would get you home.

Crazy how many people have done this and there's not one complete step by step how to video.

Everybody starts as a beginner at one point. You should start at the basics and get an understanding of how the parts work. As you learn more, you can move up to more advanced projects. This is an advanced project. You should start with a beginning ESC build and do your own research how they work. Once you do that, you can move up to more involved projects. Tutorials can not keep repeating the basics in every video. It is the responsibility of each person to do the research until they feel comfortable to build a project. If you had searched my earlier videos, you would see that the remote and receiver I used already came paired. It is important to understand the concepts because how will you troubleshoot them if they don't work?
