Wirelessly Stream GoPro Hero 7/8/9 to OBS Studio, VLC, Computers, etc. (MAC EDITION)

Why use a capture card when you can wirelessly stream your GoPro Hero 7/8 to your Apple / Mac computer using an RTMP server. This FREE program that creates a RTMP service that your GoPro can connect to and stream the live video to you Mac/MacBook. While there is a little delay for the footage to arrive, a lot of possibilities are here.

If VLC Video Source isn't available in OBS, you can try adding Media Source. In the Media Source settings, uncheck the "Local File" box and in the Input section, add your RTMP address there. I haven't really used option, so can't speak further on the other settings.
If you get an error message saying your rtmp address is incorrect, add “/live” to the end of the address. (Without the quotation marks)
You can also try adding just the “/“ to the end of your rtmp address if you get an invalid address error. (Without the quotation marks)

If you have problem connecting to your computer & use an iPhone, Go to Settings on your iPhone and look for the GoPro App settings, Make sure "Local Network" is turned ON so your phone can look for your computer

If you're having trouble with the go pro dropping frames or freezing altogether with this setup, there's an easy alternative setup which is more likely to run smoothly: - Choose 'Media Source' instead of 'VLC Video Source' - Uncheck the ‘Local File’ box - Paste the rtmp link in the ‘Input’ line. I work for a law enforcement security firm, meaning we are security for a few military and civilian armoires, I just look at surveillance cameras around the base all freaked day long and because this and many apps force users to stream to wifi instead of directly to their computer its a security concern, its also instant criminal intrusion if its not mentioned that someone can monitor your camera in the agreement you most likely did not read and even if it is mentioned what is done with these videos with out your consent or approval can't be agreed...

Thanks for the video. When Gopro is set up, do you need to connect the phone to start a live stream. Say for example you are on a set and have 5 cameras, can you pre-configure the Gopros. turn them all off, then set up on different places with wifi and then from the Gopro-menus start the live stream and connect to wifi?

i have obs 26.1.2 and definitely download the mac silicon version of vlc cause im running an m1. i restarted and still dont see the vlc in the input sources for adding it as a source in order to connect it to the gopro like you did. what am i missing !!!??????

I'm trying to connect my Dji Phantom Pro 4 to OBS by using this method (I use a Mac) but once I put in the RTMP code from my laptop into the Dji go app the server still says "No Live Streams Currently", any advice or recommendations on what I should do? I need major help: I did exactly that which was stated in the video but my MacBook quickly sent me pop-ups of "system is running out of application memory". I was not even recording or streaming out of OBS, i simply had set up the GoPros and got the VLC video source to work. From there on, OBS spikes memory up insanely. It was about 2 minutes after connecting the VLC video source and according to the activity monitor, OBS was already sitting on 21GB of application memory although I only have 16GB RAM (I am aware that it might be virtual memory it is using). What can I do about this memory leak? I can't really find any solution online. Through troubleshooting, we came to realise it was at the point of the VLC video source that was causing the memory leak through OBS. So if I connect my built-in FaceTime webcam, there is no memory leak but when I use a VLC video source (which is what picks up the stream from the GoPro) it spikes. Would it work if I rather use StreamLabs instead of OBS? Any help will be super appreciated!

Hi Steve, Great video and in general great content. Congrats on the channel. I really appreciate the above video and the way you simply articulate and map out the steps. I thought I had it but as soon as I get into the "GO LIVE" phase I see my GoPro switch the red LIVE and then seconds later it stops and on my phone in the GoPro App it says "Something Went Wrong - Make sure your URL is correct and your streaming platform is not down? Any suggestions as I've walked through the steps multiple times now and I'm ready to toss the GoPro into the box slated for the "Land of forgotten toys". I've seen a few others that have the same issue with the live feed freezing but no answers. A real bummer since I was hoping it was as simple as he made it look. Also, how do you livestream with multiple cameras? I thought he mentioned that early on but didn't provide instructions. Also didn't address the requirement by OBS to set up the stream source in settings as well. Back to the drawing board (i.e. searching more YT videos).

I got it to work a different way without the video freezing after a few minutes and supports multiple GoPros - set up a new scene, choose Media Source, not VLC video source, and assign the rtmp IP mac address for each camera (it doesn't work if you use the default IP even if you have rtmp and VLC running on the same mac as OBS). When you record the livestreaming session the file will appear in the format and location that you assigned in OBS settings. I'm still working out the output sound during livestreaming with BlackHole.

Does your security or firewall setting allow for misc programs to run? Open System Preferences, then Security & Privacy, then look under Firewall. You may need to unlock the padlock on the bottom left to access the Firewall Options

Do you have any advice for video freezing? Overall, this is a great setup. For some reason, after a few seconds, the video for my live stream just freezes, no issue with sound. I’ve never tried it, but theoretically it should work. You would need to open up port forwarding on your home router to pass the traffic from the internet to access your home network. Instead of using the IP address of your computer to put into the GoPro, you would need to your your home’s public IP address.
