That is so cool. So, you don't have to strip the insulation away? When you crimp the connector, it does it for you?

Soldered wiring connections are probably best over the long haul, but suitcase-style connections like the ones shown in the video are very simple and generally work quite well.

I am fixing to build my first O27 layout. on my N gauge I used a 18 gauge single wire that is used for alarm and fire systems (red/black) in a single shield.. My question is, can I use this same wire to wire my O27 track as bus and feeder wire?

No, that's too thin. You would be much better off to use 12 gauge stranded wire. Generally the automotive aisle at a big box retailers sells this type of wire and it's fairly affordable.

You should definitely stay away from those splice caps if you're using DCC it's all right and work through great with DC or analog as it's better known but you should stay away from them with DCC and if you do have to use them make sure that the Gap in the connector works well with the gauge of wire that you're using

What is the green wire for?

I have a 1957 American flyer 313 that i'm trying to restore. I'm missing the wires that go from the transformer to the track. What guage should i get and can i just buy'em from a store or do i need special kinda wires.........I'm very dumb on this, i have no clue what i'm doing. Thanks

Any 12 gauge wire would work just fine -- you can find it in the automotive aisle of your local discount store. Good luck restoring your 313!

Why did you use three wires versus two wires for the Bus wire? Sorry... I am a novice, but I only would think you need a red and black 16 gauge wire with 22 gauge connecting wire.

Agreed!! I never use those for any wiring projects or repairs. I've literally found hundreds of low voltage/low current problems due to these cheap built connectors. People use them lots for trailer wiring and end up with intermittent problems and/or non working lights and signals....NEVER USE THEM!!!

Those are probably the worst connectors you could possibly use for any kind of wiring project. The "Tab" that does the splice is quite a bit smaller than the gauge of wire used and while it's great for keeping everything in place, if you ever need to move something around on your layout, suddenly there's a little cut in the bus wire from where the connector was. Stick to soldering! It's fast and easy with a soldering gun like that and it ensures a trouble free connection. Plus, if you ever need to remove it, just de-solder and tape where the connection was.

couldnt u just put tape over the cut?

I’ve got a rather large layout and use those connectors everywhere. Never had a problem. Remember we’re really not pulling that many amps here. What type of connections do you prefer?
