My First Attempt at playing Trackmania Nations Forever Blindfolded! My goal was to beat the first 15 tracks in the game and after a 6 hour long stream, here's the result. To this day... There's never been more KEKWs in my Twitch Chat

I just tried this one maybe ~40 times and got my first ever author medal with 09:63. Up until yesterday I played this game about 2 times over the last 7 years. I noticed in the video that he got this time by bouncing off the top of the hole and spent many attempts trying to get my speed off the ramp just right until I noticed something I've never seen before.. The height of your jump isn't determined by your launch speed, it's determined by how long you hold the accelerator key *AFTER* you've left the ramp and started flying. I must have played at least 40 hours of this game since it was launched and never noticed that.

It's amazing to see how some emerging patterns repeat in different situations. We use vision to build mental representations of environments, maybe because this our most dense source of data (depth, image, color, etc). But when vision is not available, then "touch" becomes the way to build spatial representations and mental maps. In mobile robotics this is a valid way of building a map of an indoor environment (e.g., some robot vacuums go around bumping walls to do this). I didn't watch the stream, but it seems the "touch" to Wirtual is the sound of the car bumping against the track walls. With each failed attempt, the mental map of the track becomes clearer. Other sounds (e.g., car on water, car on grass) and the predictable physical laws (e.g., time vs speed = distance) also help to build this map. Would be great to have confirmation on his mental process through this. And congrats on the great run!

Luigi's Mansion was beaten blindfolded using collision and sounds to detect walls. It really makes me wonder how big organisms would have gotten if eyes weren't a possible evolutionary outcome, we probably wouldn't move anywhere very quickly, like trees or something.

They're just really useful for a lot of lifestyles and there are clear advantages in those situations to continued development of them.

He's using sound to get feedback from the environment, sense of time to manage rehearsed movements, your brain's internal model of where "you" are (ie: internal GPS of where your character is and the map of the world, propreoceptuon (sence of where your body parts are ie: the way you know how your hands and legs are bent without looking), etc Humans use a lot more than 5 senses and our brains can improvise with less inputs surprisingly well with a bit of time to adjust.

@@solsystem1342 Google doesn't offer much info on complete darkness, but it does keep telling me bats have eyes and need some amount of light eventually. You're talking about "Evolutionary convergence" which happens with more than just eyes and is really cool. I don't exactly remember my thought experiment but bats still rely on their eyed somewhat, and I don't think it's a perfect example of zero-light or zero-eyes evolution. It's good that you point out echolocation though. More species do that than just bats. Underwater creatures use echos of their own sound to communicate and navigate. Some have inner magnetic compasses and don't rely on seeing the sun to orient themselves.

I would've said "ear drum it" I guess. It depends because the eyeball is not the part of the eye that does the seeing, just housing it, so the closest equivalent would just be the outer ear. But "I'm gonna outer ear it" is no better. Ear lobe is part of the outer ear that is only one syllable, everyone knows what it is, and it has a nice ring to it, so that might be a better choice, but if we're just picking a part of the ear for those reasons, then the drum seems the most appropriate.
