I’m going off of GAI. Because full scale IQ is based on processing speed and that dramatically affects that. Mine is longer I need more time. I got a superior on the untimed drawing portion!!!!! 😂

I'm a mom whose 8 year old was denied services because their lowest score was still considered "average", but we had a verbal of 145, visual 111, fluid 118, working memory 97 (11 & 8!) and processing 100 (9! & 11). I was told it's just an area of weakness vs. areas of strength. But there are 3 standard deviations between verbal & memory/processing. Where do I go from here? Kiddo also doesn't meet criteria for gifted because reading scores are low-- which is why we started this process. 🤐

Did they calculate a GAI? Did they suggest further evaluation? You should ask them for rating scales to see how your child is functioning in class. They should not limit access to advanced classes based on low working memory and processing speed. I'd push back.

Thank you for making this video! I live in Tn and can not get anyone to explain the results of my daughters evaluations in a way that I can make heads or tails of why she is receiving so little help. I was told she was 1 point away from an average IQ, but thanks your video I know I was given her GAI not FSIQ. I'm not sure if you talk to parents in Tn, but I would love to get your advise if at all possible. My daughter has dyslexia, but the school refuses to acknowledge that and after speaking with her OT, I am now concerned she has dysgraphia and dyscalculia. Unfortunately, in Tn you need thousands of dollars for this testing and I just can't do that. I understand if you can't speak to me, I know it's random, I'm just trying to help my daughter. Thanks again and I am so thankful for finding your channel!

Hi April, Kim and I would love to chat with you. I'm trying to work out how we can share contact info without me getting a ton of spam mail. This is our first KZbin channel, so we are super new at this. I'll let you know what we come up with.

Never allow the public school system to give your kids a IQ test , they use the test to get more funding for the athletic dept it's very well know kept secret between the LD students in high school .

So, when parents send us numbers, Kim and I tweak them and then present what we see in terms of strengths and weaknesses. I am unfortunately expensive and live in an expensive area of the country. This is why we do these videos though so that parents that don't have access to us directly can benefit from our knowledge without have to pay an hourly cost.

Thanks for this informative video - as a provisional psychologist working in Australian schools this is invaluable! Do you have any videos on how to talk through (FSIQ) low scores with parents?
@explainingdyslexia

HI, We will put this on the to do list. This is difficult to do, but I remind people that we can teach kids how to think and reason deeply. Hence, when we talk about any subtest, we typically offer ideas on how to improve skills used on each subtest.

We can add that to the list of videos. It is difficult and sensitive. It is reasonable to point out that we now look at individuals with intellectual disabilities to be life long learners despite the school system ending their education at 21 y, 11 m, 29 days. There are more programs for students to help them become more independently functioning adults. I would encourage them to not think about numbers or limits, but to meet them where they are and build skills.

You videos are amazing! and your knowledge is remarkable. Do you have any videos explain about choosing significance levels and overall or ability level base rates?
@explainingdyslexia
@explainingdyslexia 11 ай бұрын
We just made a video of discrepancies between Index Scores and if the difference is clinically significant (occurs in less than 10% of the population).

Thank you for this video! The public schools gave us a FSIQ and we were denied by a dyslexia immersive school because of his low IQ scores. When we went to a private psychologist who re-tested him with a GAI score, he was approved to apply to a dyslexia immersive school. My question is though, if my son were to stay at the public schools, do we want his records to show the lower FISQ score to allow him to receive more special education assistance or is it the higher GAI scores that allows him more assistance?
@explainingdyslexia
@explainingdyslexia Жыл бұрын
If your school uses severe discrepancy (looking for a certain gap between IQ and achievement, you want the higher score. The other reason you want the higher score is because the expectations for your child are to some degree (consciously or unconsciously) paired to IQ. While this should not happen, I see schools having different expectations for kids with higher IQs. They expect academics to match the individual's IQ. The higher the score, often the higher the expectation,

Hi, I am a resource teacher in norther Manitoba, Canada. I wanted to let you know that I watch your videos about the difference between FISQ and GAI. It is very informative and eye opening. I can see the discrepancies between the two score results. Can we inform parents about the difference between FISQ and the GAI?
@explainingdyslexia
@explainingdyslexia 3 ай бұрын
Yes! And it is helpful for them to understand why the difference is meaningful. IQ tests are intended to estimate ability and often kids with diverse profiles the Full Scale IQ does not accurately describe their strengths.

My child has a 46-point gap between his highest WISC-V score (visual spatial), and his lowest (processing speed). Working Memory is his next lowest score. His other relative lows in subtests are in Digit Span, Coding (lowest), Picture Span and Symbol Search. He's an excellent reader and speller, however. On the KBIT-2, he tested at a 132 IQ through the school. What would these broad gaps mean exactly? Does it point to a very specific learning disability? He was diagnosed with an "NOS" disability related to expressive writing. He has very particular types of writing he can never seem to do in class - but when he does write (on his own), he writes exceptionally well for his age - and probably even better than the average adult (using the computer; his handwriting is not great but not the worse). He is currently 10 and is diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum/executive dysfunction as well... Is there something else I need to ask about? I have had to bring in an advocate to try to get him on an IEP. He's been denied a total of 3x at 2 different schools. He's incredibly bright, but cannot get help for his areas of struggle - they just think he doesn't want to do his assignments. I was not given a GAI, and am trying to get someone to calculate that for me now.
@explainingdyslexia

So, that profile is NOT "normal." Having that large a gap tends to occur in less than 1% of the population (I don't even have to look it up to tell you that). When you have that large a discrepancy between scores, the Full Scale IQ will not accurately represent his potential. There is likely something going on with visual motor integration, leading to what you are describing known as dysgraphia. I would suggest to you that you'd be better off getting services through your heath insurance (if you have it) and go to a Speech Language Pathologist. The can provide appropriate individualized instruction that meets him where he is. You may have other things going on. If you will e-mail me the scores, I will calculate the GAI for you. My practice website is under the name (no gaps between the letters) Exp lan atio ns. Use my last name and that term, it should pop. If you send us all your numbers Kim and I will do an anonymous review of the profile and tell you what we see and what we would recommend for intervention.

@@explainingdyslexia yes, the evaluating psychologist told me he's probably in the 1% range with that discrepancy. I sent you the info w/subject line WISC Scores (youtube comment). I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to look at this for me.... no one seems to quite get what I'm trying to explain about my son and it's extremely frustrating.

Yes, there is a GAI for the WISC 4. The clinician how administered the test should be able to look it up for you.

The technical report from Pearson's is here - www.pearsonassessments.com/content/dam/school/global/clinical/us/assets/wisc-iv/wisc-iv-technical-report-4.pdf and gives the numbers of how to calculate the GAI.
