I keep drier lint , coated in Vaseline , in pill bottles in my kit. Never know when you’ll get soaked or lose something. I also keep a small container of salt, and some instant coffee, just in case. Making food a little tastier and a warm beverage is good for the mind if you get lost. A small daypack or Fanny pack can hold some essentials. TP, first aid kit, etc.

Some fonder memories I have is with my older cousins when I was 7 or 8 they was big rabbit hunters with dogs every time we would go out hunting at lunch time we would skin 3 rabbits cook over open fire the dogs would get the 1st rabbit and half and we would get the rest. Man those was some great times

***Rabbit gutting tip: Hold the hind legs in one hand and swing the rabbit in a 360 like a softball pitcher does toward home plate underhand. Doing it right, and the guts come flying out in front of you in one nice near package and all at once. It’s very clean once you get the hang of it. Easy.m
@PlayinHookySportfishing
@PlayinHookySportfishing Жыл бұрын
I’m going to give this a try. Don’t the ribs hold the guts in place? I’ve seen guys squeeze from the front end while the rabbit is still unskinned and everything shoots out the hind end.
@colt10mmsecurity68
@colt10mmsecurity68 Жыл бұрын
@@PlayinHookySportfishing Yeah I forgot to add…. You have to slit the belly open first from the bottom of the rib cage down to where the belly skin stops near the pelvis area. Then grab the hind legs and VAAA-VOOOM! Let her rib in a circular swing and the centrifugal motion gets the majority to come flying out. Don’t be gentle, you’re not going to “break anything.” But you do want the organs and such to detach cleanly from the chest and belly cavity in one package. The first time or two you’ll figure it out for a good technique. I can do it where I aim and “fling” the innards to the ground several feet out in front of me.

Excellent catch, clean and cook video. In the South we have two kinds of rabbits - cottontails and swamp rabbits. The cottontails are the best tasting. The swamp rabbits, not so much. If you hunt near water, the swamp rabbits will be the most numerous. Away from water, it's all cottontails.
@PlayinHookySportfishing
@PlayinHookySportfishing 9 ай бұрын
Interesting! We only have cottontails in my area, but just a bit north we have snowshoe hare. They used to be far more common but I think coyotes have kind of wiped them out. I tried eating one once but I really screwed it up. I’d like another crack at it some time if I can find a few more snowshoes.

I love hunting California cottontail rabbit. Every dove and quail season I also look for cottontails which dwell within the sage brush. Give me my Remington 870 Wingmaster 28 gauge and it’s good times! Delicious white meat, first dipped into an egg wash, then a 50/50 mix of flour/breadcrumbs. Add a little bit of salt, pepper, garlic, onion powder and into the HOT cast iron frying pan using “extra light olive oil” (used for high heat cooking). Deeeeelicious.

Rocky mountain spotted fever and Rabbit fever. Both caused by tick bites, then transmitted to humans from the handling of the rabbit. Most rabbits are fine, but there are a few out there. Personally, I always were gloves and inspect the liver. I usually wear gloves when butchering any wild game. There are other things that can be transmitted to humans from handling infected animals body fluids. The meat is safe when thoroughly cooked, it's just the bodily fluids.

@@PlayinHookySportfishing hey buddy I can give you the lowdown my cousin showed me when I was about 11 it’s so easy I use a small sharp hatchet first lay against timber tree or branch should be able to remove head and feet then pinch skin on back of rabbit chop out small piece so you can get your fingers in under skin and just pull apart and then slit belly skin and flick rabbit hard while holding back legs like your cracking a whip most inners will just flick out apart from heart and lungs and small piece of poo tube then pull out last bits and your done we had a rabbit plague here in Australia back then and we would skin 20-30 at a time super fast. Yeah sorry for abbreviated first message it sucked sorry.

Here in the US we have something called trap shooting, sporting clays, and skeet shooting and we waste 12 gauge shells on clay. 25 per 10 minute round in fact!
