Thank you for your videos! In Spanish we have a very similar phrase to "a lie has no legs", which is "la mentira tiene patas cortas" (a lie has short legs).

"What adds, subtracts" would be roughly equivalent to "Don't gild the lily" in English. "The cedar catching fire" &c. would be "Fish rot from the head down". "esh" (fire) is an easy word to remember. Not only is it very close to "ash", it even looks like flames when written.

I would argue that the Hebrew proverb is not so similar to "Fish rot from the head down" as it might be implied by the video, because, what it usually means, leans more towards "if the greats have fallen then there's no hope for the rest of us". It's less about corruption, though I can't fault them for implying it. I am arguing mainly about nuance.

הפתגם בנוגע ל״שקר״ גם מתאר צורות האותיות: אם כותבים ה׳ש׳ כמו בקלף ספר תורה, יש רק נקודה (שפיץ) אחת תחתית; וגם רואים ש ה׳ק׳ וה׳ר׳ אינן עומדות על בסיס מוצק. בניגוד לזה, המילה ׳אמת׳ נמצאת באופן איתן על קו הכתיבה!

"Le mieux est l'ennemi du bien" (enfin, c'est comme ça que je le traduirais כל המוסיף גורע ). Le système de sous-titres est génial ! Cela fait bien longtemps que je cherche une chaîne comme la vôtre pour me remettre à l'hébreu (que j'ai étudié à la fac, il y a bien longtemps, et aussi en groupe, avec un prof israélien). J'ai un ami qui me dit: "Tu parles juif, n'est-ce pas?" Je ne pensais pas que ce terme était usuel et je le corrige quand même en disant "ça s'appelle hébreu, pas juif", alors ça m'a fait rire de voir la même chose ici! 🤣

I always notice on one of my favourite foods (Turkish salt preserved black olives) that the word for Olives in Turkish is nearly the same as in Hebrew: Olives in Turkish: Zeytin Olives in Hebrew: Zeytim (זיתים) That got me wondering how similar the two languages are in general!

Even though you received comments about liking the English subtitles embedded, I don’t like it at all! I challenge myself to listen without English and now I am just reading the English and it stops optimal learning. Please, please make the subtitles optional so everyone can choose what works best for them!! Love you guys!

סרטון מאוד מעניין ומלמד! בגרמנית אנחנו גם משתמשים בביטוי "לשקר אין רגליים" אבל שינינו אותו קצת: לשקר יש רגליים קצרות. כלומר לא ייקח הרבה זמן עד שהאמת תתגלה.

2 סיבות למה לשקר אין רגלים: 1) שקר כתוב , ש . ק . ר , מילה שלא יציבה בגלל שהיא עומדת על האות - ק - והמילה א.מ.ת עומדת יציבה . 2) הנחש מייצג את השקר , כמו שבתנ"ך עם אדם וחווה, ואין לו רגליים.

שלום אלזה ודורון. צפיתי בסרטון הזה שוב. אני רוצה להוסיף להערה הקודמת שלי כמה זה עוזר להיות מסוגל לראות כתוביות בעברית ובאנגלית בו-זמנית. זה משפר את ההבנה וגם מאפשר לי לעצור את הסרטון - ולתרגל לתרגם מאנגלית לעברית כדי לבדוק אם למדתי את אוצר המילים. תודה לכם שוב! 😅
