I rewatched Puss in Boots The Last Wish for the 10th time and realized that it portrays "getting what you wish for without magic" way better than a movie centered around granting wishes. This movie is the epitome of Disney's unique ability to squander storytelling potential at every opportunity, and I said that BEFORE I learned about the concept art that implied the king AND queen were going to be evil and Asha was going to have a romance arc with a "Wish Boy" before they turned him into a Luma from Super Mario Galaxy

I believe the reason why they didn't make it fully 2D animated in traditional way is because Disney has zero talents who know how to draw without the use of 3D modeling. They have 3D sculpturers and programmers, no traditional artists who actually know how to use a brush or paints.

​@@eret3 Actually, that just depends on how they portray him in the first place- Asha could have been naive and over-looked his red flags and excused them in the beginning, but seeing how he hoards all the wishes she takes his book and summons Star. Magnifico could have been obviously bad from the get go to make him not a twist villain, the closest I could explain it is like Mother Gothel from Tangled. It would also be better if they kept Star in his original (human/shape-shifting form) and taught her his magic. Literally the ideas are endless with this premise.

And Spiderverse was a celebration, like how Wish is supposed to celebrate Disney. Spiderverse was celebrating Spiderman, and also celebrating superhero comics in general. The 2D effects emulate comic book effects, There's references to super obscure things, and the second movie pretty much embodies how Spiderman has been treated over the years. They even brought back Spectacular Spiderman for a scene.

My daughter and I saw this yesterday and when the king went from slightly egotistical to shouting at Asha in 0.0 seconds, it was jarring. It came out of nowhere and made absolutely no sense. Then there was literally no reason given for why Magnifico was so worried about the magic the star emitted other than "magic is forbidden." WHY??? Is it just because the king wants to maintain control of the kingdom? Is it because the people who killed his family and destroyed his village used magic?? There really is no reason given as to why he becomes so paranoid and unhinged overnight - he just does because he's the villain and needs to "go bad."

That's exactly what my husband and I said. He creates a utopia where everyone is actually productive and happy. He prevents certain wishes because they could be dangerous and yet, he's the bad guy? What Asha wanted could have detrimental consequences. People say it's about free will, but it isn't because Asha becomes their "fairy Godmother" and has magic. So they aren't working on their goals when she is now willingly granting them. It simply makes no sense.

People keep making excuses for the animation in Wish, like, "They're doing what Klaus did, and you guys liked that" Uhm, no. Klaus was fully 2D animated, digitally colored, and then lit with specialized CGI software that mimicked 3D lighting in the 2D scenes. And while the animation in Klaus is stunning, that's not its only positive trait. It also has a beautiful, heart-felt story. I teared up quite a few times watching that wonderful movie.

The sad thing about this movie is that it ACTUALLY had potential TO BE GOOD, if they bothered to make it an ACTUAL story instead of a checklist of Disney tropes and Easter egg fest. @@Winter-Alpha-Omega this is not the first time Disney has struggled. The 40's 80s and Early 2000s were bad times for Disney. But those bad times forced them to change and adapt. In the 50s, 90s and 2010s Disney had their biggest hits. The 2020s seem to be their recent flop era. No company has ever had a perfect streak. Eventually they have to fail in order to be successful. Its a cycle, hopefully the 2030s will bring in new innovation and creativity to the studio.

I know this movie has been talked to death but Puss in Boots The Last Wish is basically what Wish was trying to be but actually successful. Not only does handle the message of "not needing magic to make your wish come true" much better, but it does so while adding other themes, being bloody hilarious, and incredibly mature. The film doesn't try to dumb itself down cause it knows kids are smarter then some people realise and it's become one of my favourite films of all time With Wish it feels like a movie specifically made just so it can sell dolls and merch to kids, while it's not as bad as Raya or Ralph Breaks The Internet, there was just the this feeling like this film was just made to make money

The difference is indie animators only get one or two shots, and have to go all out because everything is on the line. Disney could stop producing anything altogether and it would still take another century before they go out of business. They play it safe because they *are* safe. Nothing in the universe could rip them down. So look on the bright side, get something fizzy in that cup, and watch the little underdogs show up the megacorporations again and again.

It’s a shame when it comes to the animation. When you look at the concept art, it’s beautiful! The artists working on the movie clearly had a lot of beautiful ideas for the visual style of the movie. It seems like Disney as a company came in and really messed with the creative process. It’s like they see recent stylized animated features (SpiderVerse, Mitchell vs The Machines, Puss in Boots, etc) and how popular they are among audiences, Disney wanting to jump on the ‘trend’ but to scared to lose their ‘iconic’ look they’ve been using since Tangled, so the end product looks like a half baked film with an Instagram filter slapped on it. Not to mention in the original concept, the star was supposed to be a star-boy shape shifter who would’ve been a love interest for Asha, and the king and queen were supposed to be an evil couple duo, which would’ve been so cool to see!

The creators complain about people mentioning how bad it looks, because it's made for a bigger screen, but most people will be watching at home, on their own small screens or their phones so...this argument is valid and the creators really fumbled here.

Especially given in my own country right now inflation is going insane and prices on everything are going up, people are having to steal bread FFS, we havent got spare money to take ourselves to the movies let alone our kids too. So I think I know why the music in this movie sounds so much like generic pop. Because it was produced by people who work in that field. The one dude worked on the Lady Gaga: Hold my Hand music video and was an song recording audio engineer for A Star is Born. The other writes songs for people like: Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Fifth Harmony, Shawn Mendes, Britney Spears, Dua Lipa, Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber, Hailee Steinfeld, and even Gwen Stefani. Oh and she composed the theme song for Austin & Ally. They both work in the pop industry and from what I can tell, have had no real experience in the musical theater business, which is a massive problem if you want your music to sound like the old Disney numbers. Disney music is based on musical theater rules, it's why the Renaissance works are so beloved, catchy and memorable. They are full of soul which is why you love the characters attached to them. But these? There's nothing impactful about them outside of how *cringy* they are. They are just hollow.

One of the things I think that has been harming Disney’s storytelling is that they mistook scrapping romance plotlines for scrapping a B plot and keep their MCs alone and unchanging. Romance is a good B plot because it allows for two characters to be foils for each other and grow together mutually while representing the core themes-Rapunzel and Flynn were excellent because he was cynical and she was naive, and they both learned things from each other. Frozen swapped the romance for a sisterly bond but kept this core duality theme. But these new mainline Disney movies can’t seem to figure out a consistent way to have their characters learn things and grow because they think that strong female protagonist means she has to be alone, self-sufficient, and can’t have even the potential to fall in love. The weird implications of that aside, it creates empty movies because the plot is emptier. Wish felt so empty because the MC didn’t really grow.

They start with the premise "not every wish should be granted" Well what did you ever do to get the power to decide who's wishes are worth granting? "I will grant every wish" There is soooo much potential there. "I wish my room would clean itself" (Sorcerer's Apprentice results) "I wish I could understand animals" (so many voices that will not stop talking) "I wish for revenge" (that caused a cycle of violence) Massive chaos results from granting all the wishes and princess is running around trying to fix it but the wish granter can't make wishes or undo granted wishes. In desperation, the princess goes to the deposed king and begs for help. King agrees to help if she becomes his apprentice and does things his way in the future. She agrees and he wishes for a time machine that will take her back before she deposed him so she can explain everything to her past self. Once she convinces herself not to grant all the wishes she returns to the present to find the king has arranged the official announcement that she is his apprentice. The first time she denies a wish someone asks, "Why do you get to decide who's wishes are worth granting?" It would piss off young adults but parents are the main audience for Disney and they would love it.

Dang, massively disappointed but not surprised. I feel sorry for those creatives behind the movie who genuinely had a story to tell, but got knocked down in favour of being tame. Ugh, as someone who became an Artist from drawing Ariel over and over again as a little girl and have a lot of admiration for the company, do better Disney. The potential was here.

Their excuse of “camera limitations” for the traditional animation is so stupid, I vividly remember amazing camera scenes in Aladdin (the magic carpet scene) and Hunchback of Notre Dame.

I am gonna start saying some stuff: there is a video of 2 guys saying they recived e-mails from anonymous people that worked on Disney that they decided to fire the guys that made Disney wjat it was and decides to hire activists, the movie was supposed to tell the stpry of the song whwn you wish upon a star, and in concept arts had Star be a boy and fall in love with Asha and the queen and the kind were both evil and had a cat. Also the whole animation idea for the concept art was so beautiful it looked like soemthing like I guess Sleeping Beauty. Like this movie had everything to be amazing had they didn't played it safe. Also if you notice you will see that almost every actor is playing themselves in the movie and that also makes the movie kind if me, there is no creativity, nothing in there to be real; there is no royal advisor, no court, nothing, the castle feels empty. The movie feels empty. Is full of nothing. Sad.

Regarding your point about Disney movies making progressively less profit on the nearby future: it's already true, Wish had a 200 million dolar _production_ budget and it's doing quite poorly to the point is losing money

I had no idea this movie was supposed to be a celebration of 100 years of Disney. It just seemed like the movie that just so happened to release a month after the 100th anniversary.
